I remember the first time I attended one of Lady Skollie’s Cape Town exhibitions. Titled ‘Bound’, her bold body of work lit up the white walls of the Everard Read Gallery. The tension in the repetitive linework of her mixed-media artworks evoked a sense of feeling in between — like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. It honoured womanhood (flora) and freedom (a kraal) while facing challenges that come with patriarchal limitations and control.  

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how to interpret her style and process at first, but that’s because she’s in a league of her own. After some time, her bold choice of colour, god-like figures and even some ‘sexy’ fruits became familiar. Her work had a language of its own, too; one that communicated her innermost thoughts on identity politics, sex, lust and cultural norms.

Looking at her work, I knew she was someone with a complex personality. Bold yet vulnerable, perplexing yet direct, bubbly yet stands on business, Lady Skollie is as dynamic and ‘out there’ in person as the markings she makes on Fabriano paper (or wood or Perspex — whatever floats her boat at the time).  

In the same way that this bona fide badass remains ever-changing and unpredictable, freedom in South Africa has never been straight-cut. It’s loud, layered, political, deeply personal — and for women, especially women of colour, it’s still a work in progress.

The year is 1995 and 28-year-old Pamela Anderson is at her peak: She’s the cover star of Playboy magazine, has featured in countless interviews and is the certified beach hottie on the TV series Baywatch. She’s also involved in a reckless, rock ‘n’ roll type of love with Tommy Lee.  

With her tussled, platinum blonde hair, silicone boobs, blue eyes, overly lined lips and skinny arched brows, Pamela was the ultimate sex symbol. Hollywood stereotyped her into this character, and having a sex tape leaked didn’t help counter this idea.  

However, a now 58-year-old Pamela is shedding this facade of what society created and is rewriting her narrative. She’s telling her story her way – bare faced and real. Her decision to attend a Paris Fashion Week show back in September 2023 without make-up caused quite the frenzy, as it is not very often we see public figures exposing their face in this way. This shift wasn’t just a cosmetic choice. It has evolved into a symbolic and deeply personal transformation – one that challenges the old script of Hollywood femininity and asks all of us to reconsider what it means to grow older, to be seen, and to be enough as we are.

Before social-media fame, before the traditional wedding celebrations and business ventures, before their lives became something they shared with the world, Addi and Judy were simply two people who had a chance encounter and fell in love.

They come from two different worlds, with different formative experiences, and yet both were raised with the understanding that family is central to everything. Addison Logan was born and raised in the USA. “I had a strict father who taught me that can get whatever I want as long as I work hard for it. I’ve always had this feeling of wanting the best and being very hard on myself. So, that’s really shaped me.” 

Judy Frans, born in the Eastern Cape, grew up on the streets of Capricorn, near the beachside suburb of Muizenberg in Cape Town, with the steady presence of a grandmother who taught her how to love, nurture and be the mother she is today.

Before the buzz of the DC Universe, Star Wars and his iconic casting as the voice of the lead character in Mufasa: The Lion King, Aaron Pierre grew up on one of London’s council estates (or what in the US are called ‘housing projects’) to parents with ancestal roots in the Caribbean and Sierra Leone.

While he may have caught the world’s attention for his acting chops, his early ambition lay far from Hollywood fame. Young Aaron had his sights set on being “the fastest man in the world”. He idolised sprinters such as American Maurice Greene (100-metre world record holder from 1999 to 2004).  

“I actually had the privilege of meeting him once,” he told People magazine. “I remember yelling to my mom, saying, ‘There’s Maurice Greene! Do you have anything he could sign?’ This was before iPhones and selfies. So she gave me a receipt, and I ran over to him and he signed it.’ 

Aaron might not have fulfilled his athletic dreams but he still gets to put his fitness to the test in the often gruelling roles he plays.  

Acting came into his life almost by destiny. On The Jennifer Hudson Show, he shared that his acting debut was a high-school play. “I first started acting when I was about 14 or 15. The school that I went to didn’t do drama as a subject, but they did do a play every three years, and I had the opportunity to do Moby Dick — I was the narrator.  

“I remember stepping out to, I think it was bottom stage left, and I only had about three or four lines, did my piece, went backstage, and I just remember feeling overwhelmed by this feeling of ‘That is what I wanna do for the rest of my life!”  

From there he took the leap and decided to bet on himself. He joined drama programmes, he auditioned and eventually got to train at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (alma mater of Chiwetel Ejiofor, David Oyelowo and Benedict Cumberbatch).

Easter shakes with chocolate drizzle 

Ingredients 

100g milk chocolate
3 chocolate eggs
3 cups vanilla ice cream
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 cup milk
Pinch sea salt 

Method 

1. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds, until smooth.
2. Dip the top edge of your serving glasses into the chocolate, and twirl it around, allowing it to drip down the sides. Dip and repeat until your glasses are all evenly coated. Refrigerate until set.
3. Attach an Easter egg to each straw using the remaining melted chocolate and refrigerate until set.
4. Add all the remaining ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth.
5. Pour into the prepared glasses, add astrawand refrigerate until ready to serve.

Deconstructed breakfast apple crumbles 

Serves 4  

Ingredients 

2 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp brown sugar
2 apples, halved
2 Tbsp water
1 Tbsp vanilla vodka
¼ cup oats
¼ cup almond butter
¼ cup + 1 tsp honey
4 Tbsp cream cheese
1 tsp vanilla essence 

Method 

1. Preheat oven to 160°C.
2. Heat the butter and sugar in a pan. Add the apples, cut sides down and fry for 5 minutes over medium heat. 
3. Add the water and vodka and cook for 5 minutes.
4. Mix the oats, almond butter and ¼ cup honey. Spread on a tray and bake for 5 minutes.
5. Mix the cream cheese with 1tsphoney and vanilla essence. 
6. Adda dollop cream cheese onto a plate, top with apples, drizzle with pan juices and sprinkle with oat crumble.

Buttermilk fried chicken with apple slaw  

Serves 4  

Ingredients  

For the buttermilk fried chicken  

 8 chicken pieces
4 Tbsp rice vinegar
2 Tbsp each soy sauce and sriracha
4 garlic cloves, grated
2½ cups buttermilk
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp dried mixed herbs
3 tsp origanum
1 tsp mustard powder
1 Tbsp smoked paprika
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 Tbsp black pepper
2 tsp salt  

For the apple slaw  

 ¼ green cabbage, shredded
½ red onion, sliced
1 green apple, julienned
Handful coriander, chopped
Juice of ½ lime
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
¼ cup honey
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¾ cup olive oil  

Method   

1. For the buttermilk fried chicken, mix together the chicken, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sriracha, garlic and buttermilk. Allow to marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
2.  Preheat oven to 180°C.
3. Mix all the remaining dry ingredients together and season well.
4. Heat enough oil to deep-fry the chicken in a large pot.
5. Roll each chicken piece in the flour and fry until golden. Arrange on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes, until cooked.
6. For the apple slaw, combine the ingredients, season to taste and serve with the fried chicken.

African luxury is unlike any kind we see in the typical European market. Instead, it offers vast landscape and solitude on a very different level, one where you may be secluded from others but become very much a part of space itself. A retreat cradled within the amber folds of the Namib Desert, the Gondwana Collection recently released its newest two-person pod called the Desert Whisper.

This exclusive hideaway does not attempt to overwhelm guests with grand gestures or excessive opulence. Instead, it offers something far rarer. Silence, solitude and a profound connection to some of the oldest landscapes on Earth.  

At first glance, Desert Whisper seems almost unreal. An architectural cocoon perched against the arid desert, standing alone in a vastness so complete, time feels suspended. But the magic of the place is not merely in its design. It lies in its philosophy too. The property is built around a single, compelling idea: that private space, untouched nature and intentional stillness can be the purest forms of luxury.  

Architecture that listens to the landscape  

At 124m², the space is cosy enough for two without feeling cramped. Designed by architect Sven Staby, he took his inspiration from the Nara Melon, a hardy fruit very common to this area that has been able to withstand the extreme desert climate and adapt. The whole structure was inspired to look like half a melon, as you can see the holes within the metal sheet on the exterior. The interior structure itself was built by artist Christian Hess, who was able to work hand in hand with Sven in order to achieve an out-of-this-world structure.  

The contemporary design in the most natural of surroundings allows for guests to have a luxurious experience without compromising on comfort. This stark contrast between the two also allows for the desert to shine all on its own. The arid landscape, endless views as far as the eye can see as well as the feeling of being immersed in these surroundings is unmatched. The design itself, with its curved lines, earthy colours and stone textures, harmonise effortlessly with the desert around it. Giant windows frame the Namib like an ever-changing artwork, turning dunes, cliffs and sky into living murals. 

Inside, the design is minimalist yet warm. The open-plan space flows from kitchen to lounge to bedroom, with the edges dissolving into panoramic views. Every detail seems placed with intention: soft lighting that mimics the desert glow, furnishings in natural wood and stone, and textiles that echo the muted palette of sand and rock. This is luxury that whispers and doesn’t shout. Nothing competes with the landscapes, and nothing needs to.  

Trouble in paradise  

Probably the biggest challenge for this build was the location. According to the Gondwana team, the outcropping only has one road up and down, which is solely accessible with a 4×4 vehicle. So while the view and the setting are incredible, they also made things extremely complicated with the construction process. Due to the setting, the entire structure was built on stilts to not only allow for additional cooling in the desert, but to also help avoid the need for a complex foundation. All the structure’s wooden panels were prepared in the capital city, Windhoek, then shipped to site and assembled by the team on the ground. Although the process was long and intense, the end result made it all worth it.

A symphony of solitude  

What sets this space apart is not only its aesthetic but also its respect for quietude. Silence here is not the absence of sound but the presence of something deeper — a hush that allows guests to hear themselves again.  

Outside, the desert breathes slowly. Shadows stretch and contract across the plains. The distant hum of wind becomes a form of music. At night, when the stars ignite against the ink-black sky, the sense of smallness is humbling in the best possible way.  

For many travellers, this is the true gift of the place. A break from noise, from schedules, from the digital chatter that fills our days. Desert Whisper invites visitors to recalibrate, to listen, to simply be.  

Despite its seclusion, the experience is anything but lonely. A dedicated host greets guests on arrival, manages their needs discreetly and ensures that the stay feels effortless. Fresh ingredients and beverages are stocked in the suite, allowing couples to prepare meals at their leisure — whether it’s a simple breakfast on the terrace or a romantic dinner beneath the stars.  

Outside, a private plunge pool offers a refreshing sanctuary in the afternoon heat. A shaded deck becomes a theatre for sunrise, sunset and the slow drama of desert light. And for those who crave adventure beyond the suite, the surrounding Namib offers a tapestry of experiences: photographic excursions, nature drives, scenic walks and day trips to the famous Sossusvlei dunes.  

The desert as a companion  

In an age when luxury travel is often equated with abundance — more amenities, more activities and more spectacle — Desert Whisper offers a refreshing counterpoint. Its ethos is built on less, but the less is remarkably intentional: fewer distractions, fewer people, fewer boundaries between self and nature. Luxury here is time. It is space. It is unstructured days and unbroken horizons. It is the ability to feel small and whole at once.  

The emotional landscape that emerges from this setting is difficult to articulate. Many would describe it as a grounding effect, something akin to therapy delivered by sand and sky. Others speak of creativity awakened by the simplicity of the environment. Couples often find reconnection in the uncluttered quiet, as though the desert strips away everything but what truly matters.  

In the heart of the Namib, where ancient dunes hold secrets older than humanity, this retreat stands as a testament to the power of quiet luxury. It is a place where the desert speaks —and if you listen closely, it whispers directly to the soul.

2. Warm autumn colour palettes 

In autumn, as the shades outside start to turn from bright and bold to muted and warm, this can also be reflected in your decor. Swap out a few scatter cushions as well as adding some throws and rugs in warm shades to build a more tonal room. Colour has a remarkable effect on us – it can make us feel warmer just by turning up and deepening the tonal range in our homes. Think browns and burgundy, sage green and mustard. If you don’t want to experiment too much with colour, stick to neutrals like off-white and caramel tones.

3. Faux plants and dried flowers for seasonal style 

With the change of weather, sometimes our plants can look a bit worse for wear. They lose their leaves, look a little malnourished and don’t add the pop of green we expect them to. Fresh cut blooms are also not that readily available and seem to dry up quicker than in summer. If you pop a few dried flowers in your vases, or a few faux green plants in the corner, no one will know the difference. It’s not about faking summer, but more about keeping a lush, jungle feel in your home as you transition through the seasons.

4. Light up the autumn ambience 

I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times over, but we will say it a million times more: lighting will always be key. Different lighting has a way of creating ambience in your space. From candles and overhead light fixtures to floor lamps and undercounter lighting, these layers add dimension to your home. When you want to create a warmer, autumnal living area, avoid harsh fluorescent light and choose warmer bulbs. Scatter the light across the room, consider adding candles on the TV cabinet and a floor lamp to add a warm glow to a forgotten corner. This lets you play around with how much lighting you need, as opposed to relying on your ceiling lights.
