While rainbow flags disappear after Pride Month, the work doesn’t stop. Across South Africa, organisations are fighting for equality in courtrooms, providing healthcare, offering safe spaces, supporting survivors of violence, creating community through arts and culture, and making sure LGBTQIA+ people aren’t left behind. These are some of the organisations building Pride every single day. 

 Uthingo Network  

Founded in 2003, this KZN-based human rights organization works to create safer, more inclusive communities for LGBTQIA+ people, particularly those living in rural areas. Uthingo partners with schools, healthcare providers, local government and traditional and religious leaders to tackle stigma, improve access to services, and provide psychosocial support and leadership development.   

Gender Dynamix   

Founded in 2005 and based in Cape Town, Gender DynamiX (GDX) is Africa’s first registered public benefit organization Dedicated exclusively to transgender and gender-diverse communities. GDX advances trans rights through advocacy, research, legal and policy reform, leadership development and improved access to gender-affirming healthcare. The organisation also supports community-led initiatives across South Africa and the wider southern African region, working to ensure trans and gender-diverse people can live safely and authentically. In the past 20 years, GDX has become a leading voice for transgender human rights, helping shape more inclusive laws, healthcare systems and education while strengthening trans-led movements across the continent.  

Access Chapter 2 (AC2)   

This Pretoria-based human from discrimination and rights organisation is dedicated to advancing equality for LGBTQIA+ people, women and girls across South Africa. Founded on the principles of Chapter 2 of the SA Constitution (the Bill of Rights), AC2 provides integrated legal, health and psychosocial services through its We Belong Centre, while advocating for policy reform, access to justice and protection gender-based violence. The organisation also conducts influential research to strengthen LGBTQIA+ rights. 

In one national study, AC2 found that 58% (175 out of 303 respondents) had directly experienced efforts to suppress or change their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, highlighting the urgent need for stronger legal protections and survivor support.  

Forum For The Empowerment of Women (FEW)   

Established in 2002, this Joburg-based, black lesbian, bisexual and queer organisation actively advocates for the rights, safety and well-being of black LBQ women and gender non-conforming people in South Africa. FEW creates safe spaces through leadership development, community building and rights education, while also providing hate-crime response services, court support, criminal justice system training and advocacy on gender-based violence and SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics) rights. The organisation is the driving force behind Soweto Pride, which it launched in 2004 to combat homophobia and increase LGBTQIA+ visibility in township communities. 

Pride Shelter Trust  

Founded in 2011, this is Africa’s first dedicated shelter for LGBTQIA+ people experiencing homelessness, family rejection, violence or other crises. Based in Cape Town, the organisation provides short-term safe accommodation alongside trauma-informed psychosocial support, counselling, gender-affirming healthcare referrals, life-skills development and reintegration programmes that help residents rebuild independent lives. Its holistic approach focuses on dignity, mental well-being and long-term empowerment rather than emergency shelter alone. Since opening its doors, the Trust has supported hundreds of LGBTQIA+ individuals and currently accommodates up to 20 residents at a time, with 46 residents successfully reunited with their families and reintegrated into society through its support programmes. 

The Other Foundation   

This southern African grant-making organisation helps fund and strengthen the LGBTQIA+ movement across 13 countries in the region. Rather than delivering services directly, it invests in grassroots organisations, activists and research that advance equality, safety and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ communities. Its work spans human-rights advocacy, public education, leadership development and strategic partnerships, while also producing landmark research that shapes policy and public opinion. One of its most influential studies, Progressive Prudes, was South Africa’s first nationally representative survey on attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ people, providing vital data that continues to inform advocacy and social change across the region.

The perfect suit is more than just clothing, it a reflection of who you are and how you carry yourself in the world. A single, well-chosen suit is a worthwhile investment, as it can be styled for a variety of occasions, from business meetings and formal dinners to gala celebrations. With the right accessories and styling, it can create multiple sophisticated looks. 

Finding that perfect suit can be a long and sometimes overwhelming journey. Use this step-by-step guide as a tool to choose a suit that not only fits impeccably, but will also reflect your personal style for years to come. 

Step 01

Go as close to bespoke as possible  

There is nothing wrong with choosing an off-the-rack suit, but if your budget allows, investing in a bespoke tailored suit is worth considering, as nothing offers the same level of precision and comfort. However, if you’re going the off-the-rack route, having it altered by a skilled tailor can make a significant difference to its overall fit and appearance. 

The advantage of tailoring is that it is customised to your unique body proportions, resulting in a more flattering silhouette and greater comfort (which, as anyone who has worn an ill-fitting suit will attest, is key). A good tailor will be able to recommend the necessary alterations to an off-the-rack suit.  

Step 02  

Determine the purpose of the suit  

Although a suit is an incredibly versatile wardrobe staple that can be worn for a variety of occasions, not every suit is suitable for every event. A lightweight linen suit worn to a daytime event, such as a spring wedding, will not translate well to a formal evening black-tie gala. 

That said, if you have just one suit, changing up your accessories, shirt, shoes and other details can go a long way in making it more appropriate for the occasion. The most important factor in choosing that single versatile suit is that the colour and fit are perfect for you. 

Step 03  

Material selection  

Whether you choose an off-the-rack or tailored suit, the fabric plays a crucial role in its overall appearance, comfort and longevity. The material you select will determine how the suit drapes, breathes and performs in different climates and for different occasions. 

If you want an all-year-wearable suit, then wool is advisable. Linen is perfect for summer and cotton is a good casual-elegant option. Investing in a quality fabric will not only enhance the look of your suit but also ensure it remains a timeless staple in your wardrobe for years. The lining is equally important: silk is the most luxurious, while polyester is a practical and durable alternative.

Step 04  

Patterns and colours  

Similar to the fabric, the colour of your suit goes a long way. Black and navy are the traditional and most versatile colours that work for most occasions and suit most skin tones. Charcoal grey and sand-coloured suits are the modern classics. If you like to stand out and have the attitude to pull off an unusual or brighter colour, or even white, go for it. 

Another consideration is pattern, and there are a few classics to choose from: pinstripes (most associated with business environments); checks or tartan (a more sporty choice but can work on a formal suit); and subtle and classy birds-eye weave. There’s also herringbone, houndstooth, geometric, plaid and many others that allow you to stand out. 

Step 05  

The fit  

The fit of a suit is the single most important aspect to consider. 

It enhances your posture, flatters your silhouette and ensures comfort throughout the day. It will also allow you to pull off more adventurous looks. A proper fit means it drapes smoothly without pulling or creating unnecessary folds. 

Apart from ensuring that the suit sits well on you, know that different fit options each convey a specific vibe. The slim fit is the most tapered silhouette and the most contemporary, slick and snappy look. The classic fit offers the most room through the chest, waist and legs, prioritising comfort while giving a timeless, sophisticated appearance. Finally, the tailored fit is somewhere in the middle, making it a versatile choice that complements most body types. 

Step 06  

 The finer details  

Never underestimate the details – the lapel shape and button configuration – as they complete the overall look of a suit and can significantly influence both its style and formality. The shawl lapel (smooth, rounded edge) is most associated with tuxedos and black-tie events. The notch lapel is the most classic and versatile option, working well with or without a tie and suitable for all occasions. The peak lapel is the most structured, broadening the shoulders and adding a sense of authority, making it ideal for business suits and formalwear.  

In terms of buttons, a single-breasted jacket is the most versatile choice (it can be worn open or buttoned), whereas a double-breasted jacket creates a more structured, formal appearance (and should always be buttoned up). 

Finally, your shirt and tie can be neutral and classic, or a colour that complements the suit fabric, or make a statement. 

Pocket squares and jewellery can also be used to add formality, flair or a fun element, depending on the occasion.

That chemistry has helped turn the podcast into a rapidly growing platform where they unpack relationships, careers, friendship, womanhood and the uncertainties of figuring life out. They’ve also interviewed Mzansi’s pop culture elites, such as Nomzamo Mbatha, Amanda du Pont and Nadia Nakai, since their podcast debuted in May 2025. 

The most interesting way to understand Zama and Landzy’s journey is through milestones – but not simply the obvious ones, like launching a podcast or reaching a growing audience (100K subscribers and counting), but the quieter personal markers that have shaped the women behind it.

Before the mic 

Long before BWSS, there were two girls growing up in very different family dynamics, but with experiences that would ultimately influence the women they became. 

“I was a shy girl who just wanted to be liked. That was the biggest thing for me because I’m a people pleaser,” Landzy admits.  

Zama’s childhood personality was almost the opposite. “I feel like little Zama was 

always a bubbly, funny, outspoken, loud girl,” she says, noting that this is also how her family describes her.  

With such different personalities, both Zama and Landzy turned to YouTube for very different reasons but ultimately to express themselves. Find out how these solo explorations led them to each other and ultimately launching their podcast.

When Hearts Align  

For thousands of followers on social media, Lue and Rue are recognised for their striking editorials, impeccable styling and carefully curated content. But behind the polished imagery is something far more compelling: a relationship rooted in tenderness, resilience and purpose. 

In a digital world that often rewards spectacle, they’ve quietly built a platform centred on authenticity; one where fashion becomes a language, love becomes visibility and softness becomes an act of quiet rebellion. 

Yet their story didn’t begin with social media. “We often say that our story started long before we met.” Although they grew up in different parts of the Western Cape – Luciano in Mossel Bay and Rugen in Worcester – their childhoods followed similar paths. “We didn’t come from privileged backgrounds. We grew up in communities where opportunities often felt limited, but where family, perseverance and hope carried people through.”  

Those experiences became the foundation of a connection neither of them could have anticipated. “Looking back, it’s one of the reasons we connected so deeply. We understood each other’s upbringing without having to explain it.” 

Growing up queer in those communities, however, meant learning to navigate a world where visibility often felt impossible.

For Kgothatso ‘Iman’ Dithebe, visibility was not always something she wanted Long before she became one of South Africa’s most recognisable models, known for her distinctive facial birthmark and the hashtag #modelwithamark, she was a young girl who had learnt how to make herself small. She was bullied for looking different. She became quieter, avoided going out and, at times, avoided being seen altogether. Yet the very thing that once made her feel exposed would eventually become part of what made her extraordinary. 

Breaking the rules of beauty  

That determination was necessary in an industry that was not always prepared to make room for her. Kgothatso has spoken about agencies and industry professionals asking her to cover up her birthmark – an idea that now feels almost contradictory to the career she has built.

It is a striking first impression, particularly when you consider the journey behind that lightness. Because Denise’s glow isn’t simply about looking good in front of a camera. It is the result of enduring and becoming; of weathering difficult seasons, questioning what she believed about herself and the people around her, and learning to rebuild with a stronger sense of self.  

The chapters that shaped her 

Coming from a wholesome upbringing, her mother especially was very consistent, overly protective and a great supportive system for Denise and her siblings. 

“I’m the last born of four kids, so I was quite spoilt and protected by my older siblings. I enjoyed school mainly for the extra-curricular activities, such as art, plays and dance competitions, athletics, swimming and playing first-team hockey from Grade 8,” she says.

To this day, she loves making music and dancing up a storm – nobody can rain on her parade.

Aka ‘lingerie shorts’, this is where romance meets relaxation – and the ultimate hack for women who want to feel feminine but have mixed feelings about skirts. The beauty of this trend is it blends comfort with factor-10 glamour, making it hugely versatile. Wear these shorts over your bikini to the beach, with a pair of heels to hit the night club, or add a blazer and boots for the boardroom (depending on how strict your company dress code is, you may want a longer pair for work).
