He’s the creative director of his own life, a man who has turned taste into his language and livelihood. From being named one of South Africa’s best-dressed men to becoming a respected voice in the dining scene, his rise has been less about reinvention and more about refinement.

Over late-afternoon drinks at Tannin in Cape Town, that sense of control softens. It’s his choice of setting – outdoor seating where the city moves around you. He says he likes to sit here, watch the foot traffic, take it all in. His drink of choice arrives: a classic Negroni. 

It’s not long before the planned structure of the interview dissolves. When Seth talks about food – really talks about it – you find yourself pulled in. He connects flavour to memory, fashion to feeling, art to everyday life, with an ease that feels instinctive rather than rehearsed. 

The conversation drifts, as it always does, towards home.  

Where are you based now? Where do you feel most yourself? It’s an easy question, but he doesn’t answer it lightly. Home, he says, isn’t fixed. It’s not about geography; it’s about where the work happens and where the ideas take shape. Right now, that place is London. 

“It’s where my art lives,” he says with a chuckle.

There’s a specific kind of electricity that only Harlem can produce – a rhythmic, neon-lit energy that fuses the grit of the pavement with the grace of the catwalk. If you were to bottle that energy, label it and give it a pair of gravity-defying sneakers, it would look exactly like Teyana Taylor. At 35, Teyana isn’t just a performer; she’s a cultural engineer who has spent two decades proving that “glamour” isn’t about the dress you wear, but the history that you carry within it. 

Her rise to fame reads like a blueprint for the modern multi-hyphenate. While most teenagers were navigating the awkward hallways of high school, a 15-year-old Teyana was already in the rehearsal room with Beyoncé, choreographing the high-octane, siren-wailing visuals for the ‘Ring the Alarm’ music video. She didn’t just enter the industry; she kicked the door down with a swivel and a smirk. From her first major introduction to the public consciousness on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 – where her bravado was as oversized as her birthday plans – to her current status as a global icon, Teyana is an all-round entertainer who can stop the world with a single frame. Yet, even with the world at her feet, she remains a student, having enrolled at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. Teyana Taylor is a woman who refuses to be finished – she is a perpetual motion machine and right now, she’s moving towards a legacy that is purely, undeniably glamorous.

Fiery fried rice

 Serves 2–3  

Ingredients  

2 Tbsp oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 carrots, diced 
1 punnet (200g) mushrooms of your choice, sliced
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 cups cooked white rice
3 Tbsp chilli paste 
2 Tbsp soy sauce
6 extra-large eggs 
Salt and milled black pepper
2–3 Tbsp chilli crisp (or use chilli sauce or sambal oelek chilli paste) 
2 spring onions, thinly sliced 

Method  

1. Heat 1 Tbsp oil in a cast-iron pan over medium-hot coals. Fry onion and carrot for 4–5 minutes.  
2. Add mushrooms and fry for 4–5 minutes, then add garlic and fry for about 2 minutes. 
3. Stir in rice, combining evenly. 
4. Add chilli paste and soy sauce.  Stir-fry mixture until sauce is reduced and sticky (it should not be runny).  
5. Whisk 3 eggs and add to rice, stir-frying until just cooked. (Be careful not to overcook, which will result in watery egg). Remove from heat.  
6. In another cast-iron pan over medium coals, heat oil and fry remaining eggs.  
7. Dish fiery rice into bowls, top with fried egg and season. Garnish with chilli crisp and spring onion.

If you’ve seen a TikTok or Insta reel about ‘Wearing vs Styling’ or even ‘Gen Z can wear the same set of clothes twice and, with only minor changes, present two entirely different looks to the world. 

The easiest upgrade: accessories and layers 

Need a shortcut to personal style? The cheat you’re looking for is a small, well-chosen set of accessories that allows you to put your own spin on simple pieces: a T-shirt worn with pearl earrings and a headband gives an entirely different vibe to the same shirt worn with layered necklaces and a neck scarf. 

A quick glance at any gallery of street-style images will also show you that layers are a powerful way to look more polished, fast! Add a couple of layering basics to your wardrobe – coats, cardis, hoodies, blazers along with neutral slim-fit tops and tees – and you’ll have endless options to play with. 

Top tip:

A scarf is probably one of the most versatile accessories in a wardrobe. Not only for around the neck or as a head wrap, but it can do double duty as a belt/sash or even be worn as a top with some creative knotting. 

Zone in on layering your jewellery – whether it’s multiple rings, necklaces of various lengths, or a bold set of cuff bangles.  

Custom clothing: it’s all yours 

If you know how you want to look, you can unlock the power of one-of-a-kind pieces. Find your nearest thrift store, ask around for tailor or seamstress recommendations, and prepare to deliver disappointing answers to endless “Where did you get that?” questions. 

Amazing things happen when you realise that your clothes are 100% yours, and you can do with them exactly as you please. Found jeans that fit exactly right at the waist and thigh, but are a little too long? That’s nothing that you, a sewing kit and a YouTube tutorial can’t solve. The same goes for swapping out buttons, or altering sleeves, or adding detailing to a plain garment. 

Finding your signature 

Signature style means a specific aesthetic: think of the friend who has a distinctive yoga-instructor vibe, or something preppy going on, no matter what individual items they wear. For some, it can be a little more specific: a few favourite bags, shoes or jewellery pieces that anchor their look and last through the seasons even as they style them slightly differently – what’s a headscarf in summer might be worn as a cravat in autumn. 

When you see patterns and similarities emerging in the kinds of looks you like, that’s your personal style – and when you’re confident in your personal style, it’s a lot easier to know what you really want to buy, and how and when to wear it.

As with most things, you’ll get as much out of personal style as you put in, so even if you’re not ready to think of yourself as a fashion girly, there’s a practical and logical side to it: time spent on your ‘My Style’ Pinterest board is an investment in streamlining your life and saving money on impulse buys. 

Top tip

Experimenting with silhouettes can be a key to signature style – puffy on top, slim below, or wide skirts and pants with tighter tops. A belt can also make all the difference; look for unusual textures, colours or buckles to add your stamp to an outfit. A belt worn with a cardigan or to cinch a floaty dress is an entirely different vibe. Or double up on your belts (layering). 

It’s bold and makes a statement – wearing a classic shirt back to front, with the buttons at the back. 

Dress up and show up 

Want to try out a new look but feeling undecided? Wear it to do a simple errand. Not only will you get used to turning heads (something that comes with the territory for those with great personal style), but you’ll also have a quick practise run to see if the look feels like ‘you’. If your new wide-legged pants just don’t feel right in the aisles of the supermarket, you’ve got time to try them with your top tucked in, with kitten heels instead of sneakers, have an odd fit altered or try a different size before you take the look out to a social occasion.

Loaf love: Farm-style white bread 

Makes 2 x 30cm round loaves  

Ingredients 

 2 cups (500ml) tepid water
2 Tbsp (26g) sugar
1 Tbsp (10g) instant yeast
¼ cup (60ml) oil
5 cups (750g) cake flour
1½ tsp (7.5ml) salt  

Method 

1. Stir together water, sugar and yeast. Set aside for 10 minutes until the surface of the mixture becomes frothy. Add oil.  
2. Place flour and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment (or a large mixing bowl).  
3. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead on medium-low for 10 minutes, stopping to scrape down the bowl halfway through. (If kneading by hand, first use a wooden spoon to combine the wet and dry ingredients, then once the dough has roughly formed, turn out onto a working surface and bring together with your hands, kneading until smooth and elastic).  
4. Lightly oil your mixing bowl, place dough inside and cover with cling wrap. Set in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size and springs back when poked.  
5. Lightly flour your work surface and turn dough out, kneading a few times to remove the air.  
6. Dust the bases of two large oven-safe pots with flour. 
7. Halve the dough and work each into a smooth ball, pinching the dough at the bottom.  
8. Place the doughs in their prepared pots, cover and set aside for another 20 minutes.  
9. Preheat the oven to 180ºC. 
10. Score a shallow line down the middle-top section of each dough before placing in the oven and baking for 35-40 minutes. (Alternatively, bake one at a time.)  
11. Remove and cool in the pot for another 20 minutes before turning out to cool completely. Store at room temperature in a sealed container to preserve freshness, or pre-slice and freeze in an air-tight bag or container for up to 1 month.

Savoury bake: Oh-so-cheesy muffins 

Makes 12   

Ingredients 

3 Tbsp (45ml) melted butter
3 cloves garlic, grated
2 cups (300g) self-raising flour
½ tsp (2.5ml) salt
Milled pepper
1 large egg
⅞ cup (220ml) milk
⅓ cup (80ml) sour cream
⅓ cup (80ml) canola oil
Handful of parsley, chopped 
1-2 sprigs thyme and/or rosemary, leaves picked and chopped
2 cups (200g) grated mature Cheddar
1 cup (110g) mozzarella, cubed  

Method 

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 
2. Mix together butter and half of the garlic. Brush a 12-hole muffin pan with the garlic butter and reserve leftover butter for topping. 
3. Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl. Season. 
4. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, sour cream, oil, herbs and remaining garlic. 
5. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, then add in Cheddar (reserving about ½ cup for topping.) 
6. Use an ice-cream scoop to portion the mixture into the muffin tray. 
7. Stuff the mozzarella cubes into the centre of the batter. 
8. Drizzle with remaining garlic butter and sprinkle with reserved Cheddar. 
9. Bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. 
10. Serve warm or cool completely before storing in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Chocolate treat: Gooey peanut butter & chocolate cups  

Serves 4  

Ingredients 

1 cup (150g) cake flour
3 Tbsp (24g) cocoa powder + extra for dusting
2 tsp (10ml) baking powder
Pinch salt
⅓ cup (66g) sugar
1 cup (250ml) milk
3 Tbsp (45ml) melted butter or canola oil
1 tsp (5ml) vanilla essence
3 Tbsp (45ml) smooth or crunchy peanut butter
1 slab (80g) dark chocolate, chopped
Vanilla ice-cream, for serving  

Method  

1. Combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and sugar. 
2. Mix together milk, butter or oil and vanilla. Add the wet mixture to dry ingredients and mix to create a smooth batter. 
3. Spoon ¼ of the mixture into a greased 8-10cm wide cup. 
4. Place 2 tsp peanut butter and ¼ of the chocolate in the centre of the batter and press down slightly with the back of a spoon. 
5. Microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute. 
6. Repeat with remaining batter, peanut butter and chocolate. 
7. Dust with extra cocoa powder and serve with a scoop of ice-cream.

Showstopper dessert: Basque cheesecake 

Serves 8-10  

Ingredients 

3 cups (750g) full-fat cream cheese
1½ cups (375ml) cream
4 extra-large eggs
1¼ cups (275g) caster sugar
2 tsp (10ml) vanilla essence
3 Tbsp (45ml) flour
½ tsp (2,5ml) salt 

Method 

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 
2. Line a 23cm loose-bottom cake tin with baking paper, covering the base and sides. Repeat to overlap, making sure there is no exposed tin.  
3. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and blitz with a stick blender until smooth. Pour into prepared cake tin.  
4. Bake for 50-60 minutes until dark brown, keeping a close eye towards the end as the cake browns quickly. Turn the oven off and leave the door slightly ajar, letting the cheesecake cool overnight in the oven, or for at least 1-2 hours. Chill in the fridge until serving.  
5. Unmould, slice and serve at room temperature for best taste. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
