Also a part of The Style Council is DJ and designer Wendy Ntinezo, who is relishing the chance to solidify her position in the menswear space. “I think I was around 18 years old when I started shopping in the men’s section, and I’ve never looked back!” she says.  

“The Style Council campaign is an opportunity for me to share my ideas about style and comfort while also delving into fundamental concepts such as colour theory, rhythm, harmony, silhouettes, balance, proportion and functionality. Fashion can be technical, but once you understand some of the style principles, mastering a look is effortless.”   

The third member, stylist and tastemaker Obakeng Rantlhane, echoes that exact belief. “The vision behind The Style Council is to educate the audience on how to curate their outfits better,” he says. “As a stylist, I believe there are fashion rules that need to be mastered first for one to be able to have fun with putting together an outfit: how the clothes fit, making sure the proportions are well-balanced, and the use of colour palettes.”

Men who are on the side of women, and actively campaign for issues affecting them, provide a sense of hope and optimism for the future of both the nation and the entire planet.   

It’s imperative to raise a new generation of men who respect women, so having amazing role models for younger South African men causes a positive chain reaction. Ultimately, men who are revered public figures and regular guys both have the power to improve the lives of women, which is no small feat. 

Michael Van Niekerk  

Michael, founder of Keep The Energy, is one of the leading activists against gender-based violence in South Africa. He was studying at the time when the #AmINextMovement began in 2019, after the rape and murder of UCT student Uyuinene Mrwetyana.  

His account’s bio reads: “Our aim is to fight gender-based violence against women, children and LGBTQIA+ persons. We cannot afford to die down.” Keep The Energy is now a registered NPO and raises funds to end GBV. With over 100K followers, the account is indeed keeping (if not powering) the energy.

Siv Ngesi  

South African actor – and our MAN January cover star – Siv Ngesi is an outspoken advocate for equal rights and uses his platform to fight against injustices women experience in our countrry. After meeting a homeless woman and becoming concerned about how these women deal with their period, he founded MENstruation.   

The slogan of the charity outlines its aim: “If men bled once a month, sanitary products would be free. Period!” MENstruation donates thousands of sanitary products monthly to women and girls. Girls who can’t afford pads often miss school, which jeopardises their education and future success.   

“My charity currently distributes about 33 000 sanitary pads to mostly schoolgirls every month. We have a vending-machine system that also helps us reach young girls,” he says. “We have plans to open a factory to manufacture the Agojie Pad, named after the female army in The Woman King.”  

Ngesi’s bigger vision in fighting period poverty, however, is for there to no longer be a need for such charities. “My biggest aim is fighting for free sanitary pads.”

Ian has been helping South African women break into the business sector for almost 20 years. After seeing a gap in the market for a large chain of beauty salons in Africa, Fuhr founded the Sorbet Group.  

“The Sorbet community is a place that empowered female entrepreneurs to own their own businesses,” he says, “and then further empowered many other women and men to build careers and to sustain their families.”

Luyolo Lengisi & Siyabonga Khusela  

In 2019, Capetonians Luyolo and Siyabonga started #LangaForMen in their community. They both witnessed gender-based violence growing up and felt the need to help prevent it. Langa for Men aims to help young boys grow to be good men and not perpetrators of GBV.   

They provide workshops, such as Boys to Men, for guys between the ages of 10 and 28, aimed at educating them on consent, patriarchy and toxic masculinity. Luyolo emphasises the importance of instilling good values from a young age: “We realised that most organisations were telling girls and women what to do, how to dress and stay safe etc, but no one was talking to the men – the root of the issue.  

That is where we come in.” Langa for Men also facilitates sessions where victims of abuse may come and share their experiences and hopefully heal. Donations to their organisation can be made via GoGetFunding.

Not only is it more fun to work out with someone, but your buddy can also keep you motivated. Find a partner who will hold you accountable when the urge to cancel after a late night out comes creeping in. Partners are perfect for playing sports like tennis and golf, or even go for an oceanside run together. 

Keep It Short And Sweet

Your sweat sesh doesn’t need to be hours long for it to be effective. If you can squeeze in 30 minutes – perfect! Getting your heart rate up is enough. According to personal trainer Luke Zocchi, you can get a fantastic workout in only 20 minutes if you do bodyweight exercises. Plus, you can do them anywhere!

Chest day? Or do you mean rest day? Remember to relax – you are on holiday, after all. Although it is crucial to stay on top of your fitness, remember to relax and have fun. Cool off by the pool after workouts, hydrate and hit the snooze button now and again.

There are so many wondrous and diverse places to see and explore on this continent. And while Africa has some of the fastest-growing cities on Earth, we have plenty of urban hubs that possess the heart and soul of an old-fashioned village.  

1. Dakar, Senegal

Africa’s westernmost country, Senegal, has a dazzling 531km coastline with a mix of sleepy fishing villages and bustling towns. It has a real buzz of cultural activity, notably in capital Dakar, where there’s a vibrant trendy-meets-traditional sensibility. 

A port city, it has a beautiful seaside location on the Cape Verde peninsula – plus superb weather. While it’s a laid-back place, there’s a sophistication that’s evident in everything – food, fashion, music and its cultural scene.  

The Senegalese are very entrepreneurial so there’s a vibrancy that’s felt wherever you go; an underlying vibration caused by the hustle and bustle.  

You can experience it at music festivals and art gatherings, in clubs and galleries, and on the streets. Nightlife is legendary here, with mbalax dance music spilling out of cool spaces you’ll want to explore.  

2. Cairo, Egypt

Whether you’re here to savour the conversation over a cup of apple tea or haggle over the price of a camel ride to see the pyramids, Cairo (“the victorious city”) is simply one of those must-see destinations, if only to get a sense of the scale of it all – it’s the biggest metropolis in the Arab world, overflowing with a complex history, myths and legends, and it’s the only city on Earth where one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still stands: the Great Pyramid of Giza.  

A magical place located along the banks of the Nile, Egyptian kingdoms have left an imprint on the cultural and social fabric of life that’s unfolded over the millennia. Cairo’s heart, however, is Tahrir Square, where the colossal Egyptian Museum is a treasure trove of mummies and ancient artefacts.  

Then there’s Gezira Island’s Zamalek district, a stunning green oasis that houses the Cairo Tower, from which you’ll get fabulous panoramic views of the city.  

3. Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi is one of the few cities around the globe with its own national park – you’ll even be able to spot game striding through open grassland just prior to touchdown, so try to book a window seat when you fly there. 

Within the park, a wonderful place to see animals in a unique context is the elephant and rhino orphanage run by The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which operates several anti-poaching surveillance teams in Kenya and pioneered the hand-rearing of elephant and rhino calves.  

The animal nursery is open to visitors for one hour every day (11am to noon). There’s also the leafy suburb of Langata, with the luxe Giraffe Manor to stay overnight. Downtown Nairobi throbs and pulses with life.  

The congestion on the roads can be chaotic, but there’s a vibe here, too. At night, the city’s bars and nightclubs are enormously social, with live music, dancing, chit-chat with strangers and meat cooked on the coals. Many who arrive fall in love with it. Go and find out why.  

4. Port Louis, Mauritius

Located right between the Indian Ocean and a mountain backdrop, Mauritius’s capital city exemplifies modernity and tradition. Traffic can be quite overwhelming, though. This is why walking tours are a godsend.  

Meet your guide for a food-focused, on-foot adventure that dips into the city’s history and back alleys, ancient spice warehouses and hole-in-the-wall sweet shops. 

 Skip breakfast, because you’ll be tucking into Mauritian street food, such as deep-fried chilli cakes and Indian-style crêpes stuffed with spicy vegetables.  

Shop till you drop at Le Caudan Waterfront, where you’ll find everything from pareos (sarongs), local artworks, textiles and jewellery to essential oils and duty-free designer clothing. Such a spoil, honestly, and you’ll surely find something to attach your new memories of this gorgeous city to.  

5. Chefchaouen, Morocco

Aren’t the most heavenly places the ones you’ve never heard of and probably can’t pronounce? That’s the case with this barely known ‘blue city’ in north-western Morocco.  

It may not get all the press and hype given to Fes and Marrakech, but it’s an absolute stunner, and with a population of less than 50 000, a far more soothing place to visit and get to know the North African culture.  

Like those other more touristy cities, here you can explore the souks, taste tagines and get lost in a medina of maze-like alleys, some so narrow you must turn sideways to pass other people. What’s special about Chefchaouen (apart from its blue-painted buildings) is its mountainside location, so it’s an ideal base for hikers – there are trails to explore across the Rif mountain range.  

Spend some time in Talassemtane National Park and make a point of visiting the park’s Akchour Waterfalls, where you can take a dip below each of the falls, because there are deep chasms in which to swim. Curiously, the two main waterfalls are connected by what happens to be called God’s Bridge.

Now, let’s be honest. It’s a common headline these days: “Young content creator makes it big” or “Social media star breaks the internet.”  

That being said, it’s only once in a while that a truly unique personality breaks through the algorithm, without saying a single word on camera, and goes absolutely viral across the globe for it. And this is true for the Senegalese-Italian factory worker turned TikTok sensation.

Khaby Showed Us That Silence Is Golden  

The 22-year-old was born in Senegal, in 2000. Soon after, he and his family relocated to Chivasso, a little town situated in Northern Italy. He remembers having a rather “normal” childhood, taking a keen liking to all things animé and even giving football a go.  

But, what stands out about his childhood is his knack for keeping those around him laughing and entertained. Fast-forward to the rapid spread of Covid-19 in 2020, in Italy, which is when Khaby was laid off from his job as a factory worker.  

“The pandemic had just started and I was bored, with a lot of time on my hands, so I started making videos on TikTok,” he explains. And his completely wordless videos that tend to mock overly complicated life hacks (with his obvious and simple solutions) have been resonating with millions across the globe ever since.  

“Making people laugh has always been my biggest passion in life. I have big dreams and will not stop until I have reached them,” he says. “Most of my inspiration comes from my everyday life. I surf the net, TikTok and other social platforms for ideas. But it’s not easy at all.  

Every day, I spend at least three hours looking for the right video to parody. I always try to be careful not to offend anyone with my videos, and I always prefer to joke with light-hearted parody.  

I think the reason that I am silent speaks louder – it is accessible to more people than if I would make my videos in English. I speak a universal language that everyone understands.”

Video Content Still Rules

Just two years after joining the TikTok world, Khaby’s following has surpassed some of the platform’s biggest stars, such as Charli D’Amelio (147.5M), Bella Poarch (91.9M) and even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (59.9M).  

With video content taking centre stage right now, the satirical star has set a record for having the fastest growing TikTok account that the world has seen thus far. His content does well on Instagram and so do his YouTube shorts – an added bonus, of course.  

“My follower base is my family, and I would not be who I am without family. I would never see them as just numbers, as everybody is someone I want to build relationships with, both offline and online,” he explains when asked about his success.  

“I love to meet them in real life, and to engage them in my life. That’s the reason why I always try to keep my videos genuine and authentic. In the near term I also have a lot of surprises for them coming up.” 

Now Khaby Is A Globe Trotting Star  

After attending the Venice Film Festival as a special guest in 2021, for the first screening of French film Lost Illusions by Xavier Giannoli, Khaby quickly became one of the highest paid TikTokers in the world and has since caught the attention of many celebrities and influencers. However, he has also become quite popular with fashionistas and famous designers.   

At present, the quirky youngster is a global ambassador for Hugo Boss, and launched the BOSS x Khaby Capsule Collection for Spring/Summer 2022.  

At the beginning of this year, Khaby also featured alongside top models, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, in the #BeYourOwnBoss campaign video. Adding to his impressive list of accolades, he was nominated as one of Forbes’ Top Creators 2022 (ranking 8th place) and was honoured as the face of the coveted Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2022 Art & Culture list.  

“It fills me with so much joy that so many people are supporting me and giving me the chance to do what I love,” he says. Surely on a roll, the global sensation doesn’t plan on taking a break anytime soon.  

“My dream collaboration is definitely with my idol, Will Smith. 1. Learn how to shape your beard like your barber

The one-size-fits-all approach does not work with a beard. Although one setting for your whole beard does the job, styling your beard to suit your face better will elevate your look. Invest in a proper razor and beard trimmer. Use different settings and guards around the moustache, cheeks and sides to add some contrast. Remember to frequently swap out your razor cartridge to avoid razor burn and prevent the accumulation of bacteria and dead skin cells.

5. Make everyday a good hair day

While shampooing your hair is crucial, it’s the conditioner that’ll keep it moisturised. If you shampoo your hair too often, you’ll flush away your hair’s natural oils, leaving the hair strands and scalp dry. Try skipping a shampoo and washing your hair every second day instead. On wash days, apply a moisturising conditioner, and leave it on for as long as indicated on the instructions and then rinse. Adding conditioner to your haircare routine will leave you with healthy, hydrated hair.

According to the journal Medical Hypotheses, this is due to the fact that ‘exposure to cold is known to activate the sympathetic nervous system and increase the blood level of beta-endorphin and noradrenaline, and to increase synaptic release of noradrenaline in the brain as well.’

Whether it’s a swim in a cold tidal pool or an icy shower, cold water therapy can have a profound impact on your state of mental and physical alertness. A morning blast of cold water triggers your parasympathetic nervous system and gives you a sense of relaxed alertness, which makes it a great addition if you’re finding that your morning caffeine no longer works as well as it used to.

Improved Immune System

Increasingly, it seems like cold water acts like a jumpstart for your body. Our sedentary, indoor lifestyles have blunted some of the natural powers of our bodies and doing cold water therapy is one of the ways to reawaken them. A study published in the journal PLOS One, has shown that in a randomised trial in the Netherlands, cold bathers were 29% less likely to call off-sick from work. Although this was a small trial, there is a growing belief that cold exposure increases the number of white cells in your blood, which improves your immunity.

Cold water can wake you up but it can also help you to sleep. By slowing your heart rate and lowering your blood pressure and body temperature, a cold water shower before bed is a valuable tool in our frenetic world where sleep is becoming more and more valuable.

What is the male gaze?

The male gaze describes a way of portraying women as objects of male desire that exist only in terms of what they represent to a man rather than actual human beings with their own dreams, desires and agency. The male gaze can be seen through how the camera frames a woman so that the audience focuses on her body rather than what she is actually saying.

The problem with the male gaze

Even though the male gaze describes how women are portrayed in the media it has a huge impact on real life. Because viewers are only given one single narrative of women, they might subconsciously believe that that’s how women should be treated off-screen as well.  It also contributes to the patriarchal idea that no matter how talented a woman may be, the first thing we think of is how attractive she is, and that’s usually in terms of a heterosexual male standard.

The female gaze

The female gaze is very new to the media, but it’s not like the male gaze at all. It’s emotional, intimate and does not look at men like objects like the male gaze looks at women. It’s less about a power imbalance but more about seeing men and women as equal. This may be shown by male leads being more in tune with their emotions, and female leads focusing more on their careers and less on men. This is exactly what we need not just for women but for society as a whole.
