The modern approach to contouring is all about creating soft definition that enhances your natural features. When done well, contouring can subtly lift, slim and balance your face without looking obvious. The secret? Understanding your face shape and knowing exactly where to place your contour product. With the right technique and a light hand, you can achieve a naturally defined look that works for everyday wear. 

Formula checklist  

For women aged 35+, cream and liquid contour products look the most flattering because they mimic the skin’s natural texture and create a softer, more youthful finish than heavy powders. 

Pick your product  

Before you start, select the right product for your skin type and desired finish.

Contour sticks are beginner-friendly and allow for precise placement. Simply draw where needed and blend.

Liquid formulas offer a skin-like finish. Lightweight and buildable, they are easy to customise, from subtle to more sculpted.

Cream formulas blend seamlessly into the skin and create the most natural-looking, smooth finish. They’re ideal for mature skin as they don’t settle into fine lines as easily as powder products can.

Powder formulas tend to work most effectively on oily or combination skin and are perfect for setting cream contour or creating a slightly more defined look.

When choosing a contour shade, opt for a cool-toned or neutral colour that’s one to two shades deeper than your natural skin tone. Avoid products that are too warm or orange, as these can look more like bronzer than contour. 

Face shape matters  

Round Face: Create length and definition  

A round face typically has soft curves with similar width and length measurements. The goal is to add ‘structure’ and create the illusion of length.

To achieve this:  

1. Apply contour beneath the cheekbones, blending upwards towards the ears. 
2. Sweep contour along the sides of the forehead near the temples. 
3. Lightly contour along the jawline. 
4. Add a small amount down the sides of the nose if desired. 
5. Blend thoroughly so there are no visible edges. 

Oval Face: Enhance Natural balance  

An oval face is considered naturally balanced, so contouring should simply enhance your existing features. Less is more here – the goal is subtle refinement rather than reshaping.

1. Apply contour just under the cheekbones. 
2. Add a touch along the temples.

Square Face: Soften angles

To soften angular features: 

1. Apply contour around the outer corners of the forehead. 
2. Blend contour beneath the cheekbones in a gentle diagonal motion. 
3. Soften the jawline by applying contour along the outer edges. 

Heart-shaped Face: Balance the forehead and chin  

Heart-shaped faces are typically wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin. Focus on creating harmony between the upper and lower portions of your face.

To achieve this:

Long or Rectangular Face: Add width  

Long faces have more vertical length than width. You want to avoid extending your contour too far down your face, as this can elongate it further.

To create the illusion of a shorter, more balanced shape: 

1. Apply contour along the hairline at the top of the forehead. 
2. Add contour beneath the cheekbones, blending horizontally rather than downwards. 
3. Lightly contour under the chin.  

The golden rule: blend, blend, blend  

The difference between professional-looking contour and obvious make-up comes down to blending. Use a damp make-up sponge, dense contour brush or soft buffing brush to diffuse the product into the skin. 

Always blend upwards and outwards rather than downwards to create a lifting effect. Take a step back from the mirror and check your make-up in natural light. If you can clearly see where the contour starts and ends, keep blending.  

Once your contour is blended, add a touch of blusher to the apples of the cheeks and a subtle highlighter to the high points of the face. This brings warmth and dimension back into the skin, ensuring your complexion looks fresh, healthy and naturally sculpted.

Winter brings harsher conditions and a whole new set of challenges for your skin. As the temperature shifts, so should your skincare routine – especially for melanin-rich skin, which requires extra hydration and barrier support in the cold months. We asked a few bare-faced local beauties for tips.

Dry is out, balanced is in

Zithobe Macheli, affectionately known as ‘The Skin Girl, developed a passion for skincare after struggling with acne at a young age.

“I remember spending so much time trying to figure out how to heal my skin- trying different products, consulting dermatologists and doing extensive research by reading medical journals on skin and skincare,” she says.

Since then, Zithobe has grown into a trusted voice within the beauty and skincare space, not only as a content creator but as an industry contributor.

She won the Woman&Home Best Beauty Influencer Award in 2022 and returned as a judge for the 2025 awards, reflecting her continued influence and credibility within the industry. She is also currently part of the CON (Creme of Nature) Squad and has collaborated with top-tier brands such as Garnier, Eucerin, L’Oréal, Nivea and Dermalogica.

When it comes to her skincare philosophy, she emphasises balance and restoration. “It’s essential to me that a product restores what my skin naturally contains – lipids like ceramides or squalene, and ingredients such as collagen and hyaluronic acid.”

The new consumers

Shannon Dougall, founder of local brand SKINfunctional, notes that younger consumers, Gen Z and Millennials, have grown up with unprecedented access to information.

Beauty product ingredient lists are scrutinised on TikTok, routines are debated in online communities, and dermatologists are easily accessible on social media. This generation is informed, discerning and less influenced by traditional advertising and more by influencers who show proven results.

SA’s beauty market grew 7% year-on-year to reach R65 billion in 2024, significantly outpacing GDP growth of just 0.6% over the same period.

Nick Hunt, general manager at RTSC (Retail Therapy Strategic Consulting) says, “What the data confirms is what we are seeing on the ground every day. This category is growing because consumers are demanding more from it, not because of clever marketing but because the products deliver visible results.”

Asiphe Nompozolo (@missmpozie), another popular beauty and lifestyle content creator, shares: “The best skincare advice that has always worked for me is simple: never skip sunscreen. Even in winter, applying sunscreen consistently and following correct usage instructions is essential for protecting and maintaining healthy skin.”

As someone who struggles with dry skin, she says that in the colder months, hydration is the foundation of her routine.

Rather than layering multiple products, Asiphe suggests a simple three-step routine. Cleanse with a hydrating face wash, apply a hydrating serum and follow with sunscreen and a hydrating, sealing moisturiser. “This approach maintains moisture levels without overwhelming the skin, which is especially important during the colder, drier months.”

In her daily skincare routine, Asiphe focuses on using hydrating products from the very first step. “I apply my products while my skin is still slightly damp from cleansing. This helps lock in the moisture more effectively.

And in winter, I switch to richer, more nourishing formulas that support my skin barrier and prevent dryness”

The anti-ageing angle

The narrative is evolving. Today’s consumer is no longer focused on reversing time, but on optimising skin health, resilience and regeneration. Environmental stressors compound the issue. In South Africa, high UV exposure – even in winter – remains one of the leading contributors to premature ageing. Add pollution, stress and lifestyle factors, and the skin’s natural capacity to regenerate is compromised earlier than expected.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it deserves the same care you give to your overall health. From your mid-20s, collagen production declines by about 1% per year. By the time women reach their 40s and 50s, cumulative collagen loss contributes to thinning skin, reduced elasticity, fine lines and slower wound repair.

“Consumers are becoming more informed about the biology of ageing,” says Shannon. “They understand that hydration alone will not restore firmness or elasticity. They are looking for ingredients that stimulate cellular renewal and support structural integrity, which is where growth factors and regenerative molecules enter the conversation.”

Joburg-based fashion and beauty influencer @omilagqoboka believes that healthy skin plays a key role in feeling good every day.

She shares her winter routine:

2. Use a damp beauty blender 

Are you using your beauty blender incorrectly? Dampen your sponge before applying makeup. “It’s better for blending makeup on dry, winter skin because the moisture helps prevent makeup from clinging to dry patches,” says makeup artist Joseph Carrillo. “It ultimately creates a more seamless, natural and dewy finish,” he adds.

3. Steer clear of powder 

Skip powder products in the winter and choose cream-based formulas like cheek stains, balms or liquid makeup. “I think the biggest mistake people make in the winter is using heavy products with a powder base, like foundation powders or mineral foundations,” says makeup artist Susie Sobol. “These products can clog pores and lie on top of dry surfaces, causing the skin to look pasty and heavily made-up,” she adds.

4. Mix your primer with your foundation  

Foundation alone can make your makeup base look flaky, especially when battling winter skin. While many people use primer before foundation, an effective trick for a smoother, more hydrated look is to mix your foundation with a hydrating primer. “I always mix the two together and then apply [the combination] using a foundation brush. It gives a lightweight finish and leaves the skin with a luminous glow all day long”, explains makeup artist Jenny Kanavaros.
