The trend: Frosted lips

Seen on celebs such as Brandy, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, frosted eyeshadow defined Y2K glamour. Icy whites, silvers, pale blues, and lilacs were painted across lids, swept onto brow bones and packed into inner corners for maximum shimmer. Often paired with darker liners, the look emphasised sharp, angular eyes and a dramatic style.

Frosted lids are softer and more polished today. Creamy, blendable formulas with finer shimmer particles give a subtle glow rather than a heavy metallic finish. Sweep icy shades on the eyes for a look on its own or pair with a light gloss on the lips for an ethereal, fresh effect.

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a long-term inflammatory skin condition causing rough, cracked, itchy, thick, discoloured patches, and sometimes crusted or weeping sores. While it can draw wary looks from others, it’s not contagious.  

Eczema is caused by an interaction between your environment and your genes. “People with eczema have a disrupted skin barrier. Any external irritants or allergens get absorbed into the skin, and the disrupted immune system overreacts to these components, resulting in a flare-up,” says Durban-based specialist dermatologist Dr Imraan Jhetam. 

Triggers can include chemicals or preservatives, cigarette smoke, allergens such as mould, dust mites or animal dander, food allergies or stress, as well as changes in temperature, such as when the seasons change. The US National Eczema Association estimates that 1o% of people will develop eczema during their lifetime. A 2021 review in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology suggests an eczema prevalence of 18% to 20% among children in South Africa. 

Temperature triggers  

Heat and cold are among the top triggers listed by the Allergy Foundation of South Africa (AFSA), which notes that “hot humid weather and cold dry weather can make the rash worse. Getting overheated and sweating a lot can cause a problem.” 

In addition, woollen or synthetic clothing worn in winter can irritate skin, and in summer, sunburn and chlorine in swimming pools may irritate and dry out skin.  

In spring, plants and trees release pollen that can trigger some people’s immune systems to go into overdrive, causing inflammation and irritation of the skin, and an eczema flare-up.  

What’s more, research published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology suggests that pollen allergens may enter the skin through hair follicles, and remain there for up to a week, resulting in an ‘itch-flare cycle’.  

In the colder seasons, when the air dries and harsh winds can blow, skin can become dehydrated, brittle, scalyrough or tight. This can be worsened by indoor heating, causing itchiness and irritation.

Avoidance tactics  

The first line of defence is to avoid your known or suspected triggers. 

In autumn and winter:  

• If you need to wear wool for warmth, layer it over a soft cotton or silk garment to keep it away from skin or opt for a soft fleece or puffer jacket.  
• Wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves and hats to protect skin from environmental triggers, and apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser to exposed skin (with ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides) to help lock in moisture and soothe itchy, dry skin. Ask your health provider or pharmacist for advice. “Emollients with good-quality ingredients attempt to repair the skin-barrier dysfunction, which in turn reduces the skin’s overall sensitivity,” says Dr Jhetam.  
• Keep indoor allergens like dust mites at bay by investing in zip-on covers to seal off mattresses and pillows from your skin. 
• Use a humidifier to increase the moisture in the air. 
• Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser to your skin the minute you step out of the bath or shower to help lock in moisture, and prevent it evaporating into the cold, dry air so fast.  

In spring and summer: 

• Keep hydrated. Drinking water helps keep your body’s natural defences working well.
• To stay as cool and dry as possible, wear loose-fitting clothes of breathable natural fabric, such as cotton or linen.  
• Don’t hold back on the sunscreen, but Dr Jhetam notes: “For eczema patients, we recommend only mineral-based sunscreens that contain physical sun blockers like zinc and titanium oxide.”  
• If your eczema is linked to a pollen allergy, track pollen levels with The Real Pollen Count, and stay indoors at peak times. Ask your health provider about decongestants and nasal sprays to help calm inflammation throughout your body.

Lifestyle hacks

“Living a healthy lifestyle can also help to manage eczema,” says Dr Jhetam. Get regular exercise, enough sleep and eat healthily. “Processed foods, artificial flavouring and preservatives tend to ‘irritate’ the immune system and can trigger flare-ups,” he says.

According to the survey in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment, the foods more likely to contribute to flare-ups for the majority of people were ultra-processed ones, dairy, gluten, white flour products and nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, brinjals).

“The best improvement in skin was noted when adding vegetables (47.6% of participants), organic foods (39.5%) and fish oil (35%),” the authors said. 

Treatment Options  

There is no cure for eczema but you can work with a dermatologist to determine the cause — and develop a treatment plan based on your age, the symptoms and their severity. For some people, it will clear up over time, but for others it’s a lifelong condition.  

Ask About:  

• Barrier moisturisers to help reduce water loss and repair skin. 

•  Cool compresses/wet wraps to help relieve itching (apply a medicated ointment to affected skin, then cover with slightly wet bandages).  

• Topical corticosteroid creams  to help relieve inflammation, itching and scaling. Note that these can have side effects over time. “We use topical steroids for short periods (7-14 days) to control the flare-up, then switch to non-steroidal creams,” says Dr Jhetam. “The strength of steroid cream needs to be adjusted according to the type of eczema and the location — for example, a milder steroid for the face.”  

• Oral medications such as systemic corticosteroids or immunosuppressants (injections or tablets), which should be used for short periods only.  

• Antihistamines to reduce night-time itching and scratching (which can lead to skin infections).  

• Antibiotics, if the eczema results in a bacterial skin infection.  

• Phototherapy, exposing affected skin to ultraviolet light waves to help prevent immune system responses that trigger eczema, and to prevent bacterial infections.  

• Biologics, that block proteins in the immune system that may trigger inflammation. Dupilumab is the only biologic registered for eczema in SA. “It targets the key inflammatory signalling molecules that are involved in causing atopic eczema and asthma (both are type-2 inflammatory conditions).”

Everyone and everything has its place in the world. And for a thriving ecosystem, even the critters we might fear have a vital role to play. This includes bees, who have a harsh reputation for presenting a threat when you’re out enjoying the sunshine. 

Though fuzzy and adorable, when a bee stings it can spoil the day – or result in far more serious consequences if a person has an allergy to bee stings. This is why it’s important to recognise the symptoms, know the right treatment and how to stay protected. We spoke to Dr Marinda McDonald of The Allergy Clinic in Randburg to find out more. 

The big ouch  

A bee sting results in a sharp burning pain, a red welt, a small white spot at the puncture site and slight swelling… Sounds terrible enough. They’re painful, but that pain and discomfort becomes heightened when there is an allergy to bee stings. 

How do you become allergic? In a nutshell, your immune system identifies the proteins in bee venom as dangerous, triggering an over-reaction in your body. Instead of just the normal reaction to pain and swelling, your body then releases chemicals (known as histamines) that cause an uncomfortable and sometimes life-threatening reaction. 

A bee sting allergy develops over time; the first sting is not likely to cause a reaction, but the body becomes more sensitised to the venom and future bee stings are likely to produce an adverse allergic reaction. If a person has a history of allergies (to various other substances), their tolerance for bee stings is likely to be diminished.  

A bee sting allergy presents as extreme redness or swelling at the sting site. This may increase and even spread over the next day or two. In some cases, the sting can immediately result in anaphylaxis (closing of the airways, a drop in blood pressure and shock), which requires emergency treatment. 

In the event of a bee sting 

• Move carefully to an area away from the bees, to avoid any more stings.
• If the stinger is still present in the skin, scrape it off (this is where the venom sac is present). You can do this with the edge of your fingernail, a bank card, a blunt knife or similar object. Do not use tweezers, as these will squeeze more venom out of the sac.
• Clean the affected area with soap and water. Apply a cold pack or ice for 10–20 minutes to help reduce swelling. 
• Treat the pain and itching with soothing creams (such as calamine lotion), painkillers and antihistamines. Do not scratch as this might lead to a skin infection. 

In the case of an anaphylactic reaction, the treatment is adrenaline (epinephrine). The person should immediately go to the nearest emergency room. If anyone in your family has previously had an anaphylactic reaction, then it’s imperative that you have an EpiPen (containing epinephrine, available by prescription) in your home first-aid kit. “Make sure it has not expired, that you know how it works and when to administer it,” says Dr McDonald. “It is also important to have an anaphylaxis action plan. If you suspect your child has a bee allergy, confirm the severity with your doctor and discuss lifestyle factors.”

Symptoms of a system reaction to bee stings (from mild to severe) 

• Itching and sharp, burning pain 

• Skin reactions, such as hives 

• Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea 

• Swelling of throat and tongue 

• Difficulty breathing, wheezing 

• Dizziness or fainting 

• Weak, rapid pulse 

• Loss of consciousness 

Save yourself and the bees 

Dr McDonald explains that systemic reactions are more rare in children than “That said, bee stings are the most common cause of anaphylaxis in adults and second most common cause of anaphylaxis in children,” she says.  

Bee sting allergies are unlikely to go away as we age, but the severity of the reaction might lessen. Most children will outgrow their allergy if they’ve had a mild reaction, but more severe reactions have a 30–40% chance of a future severe reaction. 

How to avoid getting stung by a bee  

• Bees are attracted to perfume and sweet drinks or foods (so keep these covered when outdoors). They are also drawn to brightly coloured or floral clothing.  

• Don’t swat at a bee if it buzzes around you. It will feel threatened and more likely to sting. 

• If a bee lands on you or your child, gently move it to a flower or place to feed. You can use paper or tissue for this. Panic can make the bee feel like it’s under attack, which may result in it stinging you to defend itself. If you stay calm, you show both the bee and your child that there is nothing to fear. 

• Teach children to not stick their fingers into flowers; bees are attracted to the pollen. 

• Wear covered shoes; avoid walking barefoot across flowering fields or lawns. 

• Walk calmly away from any bees you see. If it’s a swarm, cover your nose and eyes and run for shelter inside a building or car. 

• Call in a beekeeper to remove any unwanted beehives around your home.

Loaf love: Farm-style white bread 

Makes 2 x 30cm round loaves  

Ingredients 

 2 cups (500ml) tepid water
2 Tbsp (26g) sugar
1 Tbsp (10g) instant yeast
¼ cup (60ml) oil
5 cups (750g) cake flour
1½ tsp (7.5ml) salt  

Method 

1. Stir together water, sugar and yeast. Set aside for 10 minutes until the surface of the mixture becomes frothy. Add oil.  
2. Place flour and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment (or a large mixing bowl).  
3. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead on medium-low for 10 minutes, stopping to scrape down the bowl halfway through. (If kneading by hand, first use a wooden spoon to combine the wet and dry ingredients, then once the dough has roughly formed, turn out onto a working surface and bring together with your hands, kneading until smooth and elastic).  
4. Lightly oil your mixing bowl, place dough inside and cover with cling wrap. Set in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size and springs back when poked.  
5. Lightly flour your work surface and turn dough out, kneading a few times to remove the air.  
6. Dust the bases of two large oven-safe pots with flour. 
7. Halve the dough and work each into a smooth ball, pinching the dough at the bottom.  
8. Place the doughs in their prepared pots, cover and set aside for another 20 minutes.  
9. Preheat the oven to 180ºC. 
10. Score a shallow line down the middle-top section of each dough before placing in the oven and baking for 35-40 minutes. (Alternatively, bake one at a time.)  
11. Remove and cool in the pot for another 20 minutes before turning out to cool completely. Store at room temperature in a sealed container to preserve freshness, or pre-slice and freeze in an air-tight bag or container for up to 1 month.

Savoury bake: Oh-so-cheesy muffins 

Makes 12   

Ingredients 

3 Tbsp (45ml) melted butter
3 cloves garlic, grated
2 cups (300g) self-raising flour
½ tsp (2.5ml) salt
Milled pepper
1 large egg
⅞ cup (220ml) milk
⅓ cup (80ml) sour cream
⅓ cup (80ml) canola oil
Handful of parsley, chopped 
1-2 sprigs thyme and/or rosemary, leaves picked and chopped
2 cups (200g) grated mature Cheddar
1 cup (110g) mozzarella, cubed  

Method 

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 
2. Mix together butter and half of the garlic. Brush a 12-hole muffin pan with the garlic butter and reserve leftover butter for topping. 
3. Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl. Season. 
4. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, sour cream, oil, herbs and remaining garlic. 
5. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, then add in Cheddar (reserving about ½ cup for topping.) 
6. Use an ice-cream scoop to portion the mixture into the muffin tray. 
7. Stuff the mozzarella cubes into the centre of the batter. 
8. Drizzle with remaining garlic butter and sprinkle with reserved Cheddar. 
9. Bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. 
10. Serve warm or cool completely before storing in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Chocolate treat: Gooey peanut butter & chocolate cups  

Serves 4  

Ingredients 

1 cup (150g) cake flour
3 Tbsp (24g) cocoa powder + extra for dusting
2 tsp (10ml) baking powder
Pinch salt
⅓ cup (66g) sugar
1 cup (250ml) milk
3 Tbsp (45ml) melted butter or canola oil
1 tsp (5ml) vanilla essence
3 Tbsp (45ml) smooth or crunchy peanut butter
1 slab (80g) dark chocolate, chopped
Vanilla ice-cream, for serving  

Method  

1. Combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and sugar. 
2. Mix together milk, butter or oil and vanilla. Add the wet mixture to dry ingredients and mix to create a smooth batter. 
3. Spoon ¼ of the mixture into a greased 8-10cm wide cup. 
4. Place 2 tsp peanut butter and ¼ of the chocolate in the centre of the batter and press down slightly with the back of a spoon. 
5. Microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute. 
6. Repeat with remaining batter, peanut butter and chocolate. 
7. Dust with extra cocoa powder and serve with a scoop of ice-cream.

Showstopper dessert: Basque cheesecake 

Serves 8-10  

Ingredients 

3 cups (750g) full-fat cream cheese
1½ cups (375ml) cream
4 extra-large eggs
1¼ cups (275g) caster sugar
2 tsp (10ml) vanilla essence
3 Tbsp (45ml) flour
½ tsp (2,5ml) salt 

Method 

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 
2. Line a 23cm loose-bottom cake tin with baking paper, covering the base and sides. Repeat to overlap, making sure there is no exposed tin.  
3. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and blitz with a stick blender until smooth. Pour into prepared cake tin.  
4. Bake for 50-60 minutes until dark brown, keeping a close eye towards the end as the cake browns quickly. Turn the oven off and leave the door slightly ajar, letting the cheesecake cool overnight in the oven, or for at least 1-2 hours. Chill in the fridge until serving.  
5. Unmould, slice and serve at room temperature for best taste. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Portia Modise  

Modise stands as one of the most iconic figures in African football history, not just for Banyana Banyana. She became the first African woman to score 100 international goals and carried Banyana through periods when the team lacked resources and truly struggled. She finished with 101 goals in 124 caps between 2000 and 2015, and she goes down as comfortably the country’s greatest international scorer in men’s and women’s football. 

Janine Van Wyk  

If Modise fired the imagination, then Van Wyk anchored the team with steel and longevity. As Africa’s most-capped footballer, men or women, Van Wyk became synonymous with Banyana’s defensive identity in her 185 appearances over almost two decades. Her game-reading ability and organizational skills turned her into the natural leader of the back line. She represented Banyana at multiple AFCON tournaments and two World Cups, while also founding JVW FC, a club that develops young talent.   

Thembi Kgatlane  

Kgatlana represents the explosive new era of South African women’s football with her raw pace and increasingly cultured finishing ability. A forward blessed with unique flair, she has become one of Africa’s most recognisable attacking talents and won the CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year prize in 2018. Kgatlana scored South Africa’s first Women’s World Cup goal against Spain in 2019 and her standout performances at the 2023 World Cup, where she created and finished crucial chances, cemented her status as Banyana’s modern superstar. 

Jermaine Seoposenwe  

Seoposenwe was one of Banyana’s most impactful attackers. Powerful, technically gifted and capable of scoring in high-pressure moments, she delivered one of the most important goals in South African football history, the winner against Italy at the 2023 World Cup that sent Banyana into the round of 16. Her relentless work rate, intelligent movement and ability to combine with teammates make her a constant threat across the forward line and a central figure in the team’s modern success before her retirement with 112 caps last year.

Lebogang Ramalepe 

Ramalepe quietly built a reputation as one of Africa’s most reliable defenders. Her consistency, intelligent positioning and fearless tackling made her irreplaceable for Banyana across the past decade. Ramalepe shone during the 2022 WAFCON-winning run, delivering commanding performances against top opposition. She carried that form into the 2023 World Cup, where her discipline and leadership were crucial in South Africa’s historic progression to the knockout stage. 

Desiree Ellis 

Before she became the most successful coach in South African football history, Desiree Ellis was a pioneer midfielder during the national team’s early years. As captain, she shaped Banyana’s identity in the 1990s, helping establish their competitive and foundations for success. But her second act as coach elevated her into true legend status. Ellis guided Banyana to their first WAFCON title in 2022 and their first Women’s World Cup knockout appearance in 2023, showcasing her strategic brilliance and inspirational leadership that she displayed as a player too. 

Refiloe Jane 

Jane has long been the midfield metronome of Banyana Banyana, a player whose intelligence and calm presence binds the team together. Her exceptional passing range, tactical awareness and leadership made her central to South Africa’s historic WAFCON 2022 triumph. Jane’s influence stretches across continents, having excelled at club level in Australia and Italy. Often described as the heartbeat of the side, she adds structure, balance and control, and is also the current captain of the team.

Noko Matlou  

Few players have reinvented themselves as effectively as Matlou. Originally a prolific striker, and the 2008 CAF Women’s Player of the Year, Matlou later transitioned into a commanding centre-back. Her aerial strength and pace allowed her to excel in both roles, while remaining a constant presence for Banyana. Her versatility and longevity make her one of the team’s most respected figures. She retired last year with 174 caps, just short of Van Wyk’s record. 

Amanda Dlamini  

A hard-working midfielder who won 105 caps over an 11-year period until her retirement in 2018, Dlamini was part of the generation that laid the foundation for the current success of the side. Her experience and calmness on the ball elevated her to captain of the team and she appeared at Olympic Games and WAFCON but retired just before Banyana qualified for a World Cup for the first time.

Andile Dlamini   

Dlamini has emerged as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers. Her agility, sharp reflexes and vocal leadership were central to South Africa’s triumph at WAFCON 2022, where she produced several match-winning saves. Dlamini also excelled at the 2023 World Cup, keeping Banyana competitive against world-class opposition. Beyond her performances, her bubbly personality and presence in the dressing room have made her a unifying force, offering confidence and composure from the back.

Get ready for round seven, with Carlos Alcaraz enjoying a slight points advantage as the latest rivalry in tennis begins to take root. So far, in six meetings in Grand Slam events between the two best men’s players on the planet, the 22-year-old world No.1 (Alcaraz) holds a 4-2 winning record over his 24-year-old opponent, ranked No.2, Jannik Sinner. 

Across all competitions dating back to 2021, that scorecard reads 10-6 to Alcaraz. And yes, the Spaniard will arrive in Paris looking to complete a hat-trick of wins on the Roland Garros clay on the back of his performance at the year-opening Australian Open, when he became the youngest man to achieve the career Grand Slam. Alcatraz is a juggernaut, beginning to average two Grand Slam titles a year. He already has seven, and he turns just 23 a fortnight before the first ball is struck at the French Open. 

Let us do a simple projection. Say Alcaraz continues for another 10 years at this level, taking him to 33 – Roger Federer retired at 41, Rafa Nadal at 38, and Novak Djokovic is still going strong at 38 – and wins those two Grand Slams a year, the numbers become staggering. Just FYI, Sinner won three in 2025, so he is not out of the equation either.  

Barring accident or injury, the next decade could conservatively see Alcaraz add 20 to his list of seven. The currency of determining GOAT status, apparently, is Grand Slams, and Djokovic holds that mythical title with 24. Alcaraz needs 17 more to match the GOAT. 

Given their superiority, the reality is that for now, and the foreseeable future, Alcaraz and Sinner are likely to share the Grand Slams. And, when one falls early, like in the semi-finals, the other is there to pick up the pieces. This is what happened with Djokovic at the Australian Open. He won a five-setter against Sinner in the Friday semi-final and 48 hours later was up against Alcaraz in the final. And, as every other player will find out, they are likely to have to beat Alcaraz and Sinner to win a Grand Slam. This is also because they are certain to be seeded No.1 and No.2 on opposite sides of the draw for some time to come.

Although I was watching from the comfort of the sofa, last year’s final at Roland Garros featured the most brutal consistent hitting of a tennis ball I have seen, and while the game itself might not have reached the heights of the 2008 Wimbledon final between Federer and Nadal, it surely ranks in the top three of championship finals ever played. 

Impossible as it is to compare generations, modern equipment, diet and conditioning have led to the sustained power game. Like golf, where things have evolved to the extent that players are now routinely “bombing drives” of 300 metres off the tee, tennis has become a brutal exhibition of power. But Alcaraz and Sinner are also bringing intelligence and artistry that’s far superior to whoever No.3s and 4 are. 

Last year coughed up the longest modern French Open final, all 5 hours 29 minutes of it, with Alcaraz staring at match point 3 hours 43 minutes into the contest. The Spaniard fought back and eventually won 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. Stats often lie, but of the 385 points played in the match, Sinner won 193 and Alcaraz 192. It was that tight, but the one that mattered most – match point – went the way of the younger man. 

In trying to keep up with Alcaraz, firstly narrowing the gap in their head-to-heads and even going ahead, Sinner has spent the first quarter of 2026 working on improving his serve.  

And getting more physical. When it comes to the tale of the tape, he is slightly the bigger man – 1.91m and 77kg versus 1.83m and 74kg. “I’m trying to get a very solid serve at the moment, which is what we work a lot on,” Sinner said in February. “Also a lot in the gym, the gym sessions are very important. I try to make an extra step forward in that scenario, and that’s it.”  

If you are of a betting persuasion, you might want to take that advice and pencil Sinner in for Wimbledon, but when it comes to the French Open, Alcaraz is going to be the one with the target on his back, like Nadal was on clay. He enjoys being hunted, and he is determined to do what it takes to stay a step ahead of the pack.  

“You have to find the joy in suffering,” Alcaraz said after last year’s epic in Paris. “I think that’s the key, even more on clay here in Roland Garros, long rallies, four-hour matches, five sets, you have to fight, you have to suffer, but as I talked with my team many, many times, you have to enjoy suffering. Thanks to him (Sinner), I push myself to be better, to be a better player.” 

After Alcaraz had mopped up the Australian Open in January, he was asked to look ahead to the rest of 2026 – the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open – and his opinion on picking up all four majors in this calendar year. “It is going to be a big challenge,” he replied. “I just want it to be one at a time. Right now, the next one is Roland Garros. I have great memories of that tournament. I feel really special every time. I go there. I don’t want to put myself in a really pressure position to have to do it.”  

As Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus often says, “pressure is a privilege”. It is indeed, but there is a different pressure when you are a rugby team of 23 players in the squad heading into every match. If you are an individual and having a bad day, you get substituted, and at all times, there are 14 teammates running onto the field with you.  

Standing on hallowed tennis courts like Roland Garros and Wimbledon, it is just you, with your opponent at the other side of the net. There is no place to hide. Drop your standards by the smallest of percentages and you will lose the final, and that is exactly where Alcaraz and Sinner are right now. 

The head-to-head stats show that for now, Alcaraz is starting to edge ahead of Sinner as the rivalry goes into round seven of this heavyweight tennis slugfest. But, it is all a matter of margins, and with men’s tennis Grand Slams being played over the best of five sets, there is always going to be an ebb and flow. Buckle up for the next in the series.

The new electric model will arrive in 2027, and motoring journalists are abuzz with anticipation, predicting that it might be one of the best-driving electric vehicles around based on the specs.

Originally launched in 1986 (as a special for Group A racing), the BMW M3 quickly established the template for what a driver’s saloon should be: light, balanced and direct. The M3’s weight-to power balance, exceptional handling and the way it rewards driver inputs made it the benchmark for decades.   

It combined track credibility with everyday usability, which kept the badge relevant to both purists and buyers who need to carry a briefcase and a bag of groceries. That heritage sets a high bar for any electric successor. 

What changes with electric?

Electric power alters the fundamentals. Batteries add mass and shift the centre of gravity lower, which helps cornering grip but can blunt the agility that comes from a lighter, better-balanced chassis. On average, this can add a few hundred kilograms, roughly 20 to 25% more mass versus comparable internal combustion engine models, a not insignificant factor for handling and tyre load. 

With increased mass comes altered balance, and that, in turn, affects the overall driving experience, especially in the high-performance range where M3 diehards extract the most reward. This is perhaps the biggest drawback. So much of what makes the M3 the M3 is its character. A high-performing phenom that draws its identity from its deeply mechanical roots. The rumble, growl and reaction of internal combustion, in the minds of many, is the defining characteristic and one that cannot be adequately substituted. 

But, for those with somewhat less vehement ties to this particular aspect of the M3’s makeup, the overall experience may still be intact. Electric motors (this model will have four, one for each wheel) deliver instant torque, which improves launch times and in-gear response. 

BMW sees the electric M as a technical opportunity. It has stated that fully electric M cars will set new performance standards, with bespoke battery and cooling systems aimed at repeatable high-performance us

Preserving the M personality

Sound, software and interface design will be crucial moving forward. BMW is already recording the sound of heritage M engines to blend with interior acoustics that support driver engagement without pretending to be an old-school internal combustion engine. 

Beyond simply sounding good, the sound element still matters because M drivers rely on what they hear to judge speed, eff ort and momentum. BMW does not need to copy the old engine note, but it does need to give the driver clear feedback that matches how the car is performing. 

Beyond sound, careful tuning of power delivery and driving modes can keep the car feeling playful when you want it to be, and secure and stable when you’re pushing hard.

Performance & the field

Benchmarks already exist. The Porsche Taycan has shown that an electric performance car can be extremely fast and still deliver that performance again and again without fading. Audi and Mercedes now off er electric saloons with similar straight-line pace. 

For BMW, matching headline acceleration will not be enough. The electric M3 will need to feel consistent when driven hard, stay composed through corners and give the driver confidence to push every time.  

The gains are easy to identify. Electric power brings instant response, strong grip and new ways to shape how a car behaves on the road.  

The losses are more emotional, with extra weight and the absence of the familiar inline six soundtrack. Whether speed and precision can replace that connection will come down to how well BMW tunes the overall driving experience. If the car feels balanced, engaging and confidence-inspiring from behind the wheel, an electric M3 can still live up to its badge.
