We all have that one indulgence we could live without but choose not to. From skincare splurges to salon visits and takeout treats, our team spills the one expense they refuse to give up — no matter what the budget says. Because sometimes, joy, ease, and a little treat are priceless.

Zakariyah Less, Senior Designer

One expense I could cut is my internet or WiFi service. I’ve gone without home WiFi plenty of times before, so I can manage without it. Having it makes life so much more convenient. I’ve got way too many shows and movies queued across all my streaming platforms, even to consider it!

Busisiwe Rooibaard, Social Media Manager

I could easily stop getting silk presses at the salon and try doing them myself at home, but I refuse to. I’ve fought the good fight with my hair long enough and am finally choosing ease. There’s something truly freeing about removing one demanding task from my list and letting a professional handle it while I relax, breathe, and enjoy the ritual. It’s the one luxury I won’t give up because the peace, confidence, and the feeling afterwards are worth every penny.

Andisiwe Yali, Digital Traffic Manager

Every month, when I buy groceries, as a reward for successfully managing to be an adult, I’ll treat myself to some delicious meals from restaurants. Though giving up this expense would save me a lot of cash (for sure), the convenience is just too irresistible! After all those tiring workdays where I’m utterly drained? Uber Eats comes in clutch: twenty minutes later, voilà, dinners served without lifting a single pot and pan at home – sweet bliss.

Malika Johnson, Managing Editor

An expense I could give up but refuse to is skincare. For me, skincare is more than just a routine; it’s a form of self-care and a boost to my confidence. Taking the time to care for my skin helps me feel refreshed and ready to face the day. Although skincare products can be costly, they are an investment in my well-being. I’d rather cut back on other luxuries than give up the comfort and confidence that come from maintaining healthy, glowing skin.

Aneliswa Kunene, Editorial Assistant

I could easily give up buying new sneakers, but I refuse. Even if I only buy a pair once or twice a year, it gives me a boost of confidence and makes me feel like that girl. It’s more than just a purchase; it’s a little celebration, it’s like a reward, and a reminder that I’m allowed to enjoy the things that make me feel good (even if I become broke). Sure, I could save the money, but the joy and energy I get from unboxing and smelling a fresh pair are worth every cent.

Founders Barbara Jackson and Shirley Fintz were both passionate about beadwork and its potential to empower.

Monkeybiz was set up to provide beads and cotton to women beaders, who create their artworks according to their own vision. Once completed, Monkeybiz lakes on the responsibly to market, distribute and sell the products —with the income going right back to the artist. Today, more than 250 women utilise this support system to make a living from their skill and creativity. Monkeybiz is now a celebrated non-profit known for transforming traditional beadwork into a vibrant, contemporary art form that reaches global audiences, while remaining deeply rooted in South African culture.

Beadwork is a profound part of South African heritage, rich in symbolism and storytelling. At Monkeybiz, we’re not just preserving this craft, we’re evolving it. Our artists are encouraged to break free from conventional designs and experiment creatively, ensuring that this cultural tradition stays alive, relevant and respected. It’s about honouring history while empowering modern expression.

Monkeybiz isn’t just about making beautiful art — it’s about creating opportunities. It provides a reliable income for over 250 artists, mostly women, allowing them to support their families and communities. In a world where traditional crafts are often overshadowed by mass production, Monkeybiz stands as a beacon of cultural preservation and economic upliftment.

Our designs are as diverse as the artists themselves. Each piece is a reflection of the artist’s personal story, dreams and cultural heritage. There are no patterns or strict guidelines for the beading — just creative freedom. This approach allows each piece to be a true original, full of life and individuality. We do, however, provide each bead artist with the animal frames that they bead over. In the case or custom orders, they need to follow the client’s designs.

Reaching 25 years is a significant milestone for Monkeybiz, as we celebrate 25 years as a self-sustainable NPO. We sustain ourselves through the sales of our beadwork. It’s a moment to reflect on the lives changed, the creativity unleashed and the traditions preserved. It’s also a time to look forward, building on this legacy to reach even more communities and spread the message of sustainable, community-driven art globally.

Peni Petersen

Multidisciplinary artist

“Art exists in the every day,” believes artist Peni Petersen, owner of Studio Pen based in Cape Town. Since 2019, she has been transforming ordinary items such as tablecloths, paper fans and umbrellas, candles and even fruit and veg into her canvas. These items go on to enhance the myriad tablescapes they grace, from weddings to intimate dinners. Her fine brushstrokes draw inspiration from her surroundings, utilising mother nature and turning the familiar into exceptional art. Recently, she’s used tomatoes as name placements, exquisitely painting the guests’ names onto these gorgeous veggies. It’s a unique twist to conventional methods, and yet it delivers a fun and pretty addition to an event.

From tablescaping to live painting, Peni’s creative and expertly done hand-painted art is a skill that has produced stellar collaborations, with brands such as Le Creuset and Poetry, thus illustrating that art can transcend boundaries. She embraces an attitude of “less is definitely more” by focusing on the fluidity of the brushstrokes, keeping it simple, sticking to monotones and injecting colour where needed.

A master at achieving memorable table settings, Peni advises curating your guests’ experience with various unique items to add a fun element to it — making the occasion even more special. “Personalised and hand-painted touches just give you that feeling of craft and consideration,” she adds. She appreciates subtleties, such as twisting a tablecloth in the centre of the table to create pleats and then adding a marble tray on top with a few flowers.

And with spring peeping from around the corner, Peni highlights some inspiring trends that will add character and charm to your table setting. “I think we’ll see a lot more draping, butter yellow and painting on tablecloths, which is always in because it is bespoke. Veggies will still stand in for flowers, with breads as a centerpiece,” she predicts.

Becoming an artist may feel like a daunting path. Peni’s advice to other artists looking to achieve longevity is to “move past the naysayers. Your ‘yes’ will definitely come.”

Lady Skollie

Feminist artist and activist

Art has a way of drawing you in, eliciting emotions and adding charisma to any space. With over a decade of experience, the works by artist Lady Skollie (also known as Laura Windvogel) achieve this in every way. They meticulously highlight significant themes that challenge conventions such as gender, sexuality and many more. Her visual work has an almost enigmatic quality, but look closely and you’ll unveil the deeper meanings behind them, as they reflect themes of abuse, trauma and inequality.

“The work can also be jarring,” she says. “I do a lot of very large works, but because my work often looks beautiful and bold, vibrant and easy, it can hide a lot of ugly things sometimes, which you only see when you get closer,” she explains. Colour is pivotal in her work, with much of it being warm yet dark with the use of French navy, sunflower yellow and baccarat orange. Lady Skollie envisions her paintings in spaces that have minimal glass and paired with modern furniture, wood accents and bright colours.

“… because my work often looks beautiful and bold … it can hide a lot of ugly things sometimes, which you only see when you get closer”

Her art piques the interest of specific art collectors, she says, who prefer that the paintings command the attention of a room instead of seamlessly blending with other elements in a space. Lady Skollie’s works inspired by cave paintings, in particular, are an ideal choice as a centrepiece. “The cave drawings, which are very scratchy and have lots of bushmen reaching towards the centre, like a sun, work especially well as centrepieces”.

She wants art-lovers to realise that original fine art pieces are not beyond their reach: many art galleries offer lay-by options. It’s a perfect alternative for people who are eager to support local artists doing exceptional work. Everyone can become an art collector in their own right.

Viveka and Rucita Vassen

Multidisciplinary designers

Sisters Viveka and Rucita Vassen have combined their eye for detail and design to found Ananta Design Studio, an award-winning design powerhouse. With Viveka’s foundation in fashion design and Rucita’s flair for graphic design, together the duo brings a multidisciplinary edge to their creative work.

The studio’s name Ananta‘, which translates to ‘infinite’ in Sanskrit, reveals their mission to deliver innovation that can withstand the test of time. “For us, it’s about the circular concept of creation,” they say. “We want to create timeless pieces that would eventually pass down from generation to generation.”

Their decor and furniture pieces work well in eclectic and playful spaces, while also being the perfect addition to a minimalistic design aesthetic. The sisters also share an appreciation for how light impacts the ambience of a space, explaining that it is “the ultimate mood-maker” that delivers a touch of charisma and vibrancy to a space.

They noticed that although African craftmanship is modernising, it was still being underutilised. “We saw the opportunity to support and empower local communities and crafters. We wanted to create an impact business, one that supports women artisans as well,” they explain.

“Indian cultures, which are all about abundance and maximalism, are completely reflected in our work”

They combined this passion with their creative abilities and Indian heritage to conceptualise décor and furniture that are truly iconic. “Indian cultures, which are all about abundance and maximalism, are completely reflected in our work,” they share. “That really came naturally.”

The sister-duo highlights the importance of networking between women in design to establish support as well as encouragement. They also believe that women are in the unique position to translate their natural instincts of sensitivity and empathy into art and design. “Embrace your femininity. We have a completely different perspective and bringing that through in pieces is one of our strengths.”

Sandi Mazibuko

Fashion designer & entrepreneur

“We are all queens and princesses, even kings in our own way. I would like people to feel like royalty when they are wearing our clothes;’ says fashion designer and entrepreneur Sandi Mazibuko. Hence the name of her label: House of Fabrosanz, which is a mixture of the words fabulous (Fab’) and royalty (‘ro’), plus her name (‘sanz). This is the essence of her brand.

Fashion-forward with a style Sandi describes as “modern classic”, House of FabroSanz stays true to its roots. To this end, it designs its own textiles to introduce a personal and unique element while exploring an endless vault of creativity -something that Sandi encourages fashion designers to do more of.

The Nguni print collection, in particular, is momentous for her. “The original one has South African colours, and we introduced it during a showcase in Paris and Milan. It will always be a special print to me because I did it to represent my country,” she says. “It speaks to me as well as a Zulu woman because it’s inspired by the Nguni tribe. When it comes to our prints, that is my first love.”

Her advice for anyone pursuing a career in fashion is to focus on what you want to achieve as a brand. “You need to understand your aesthetic and then you stick to it,” she explains. “It’s fine to look at trends but decide what your brand is about.”

Sandi is the epitome of living in her purpose and encouraging others to do the same. And when asked what completes an outfit, she highlights the art of confidence: “Some people can wear the look, but if the confidence is there then you not only wear the look but then you own it. It starts with you.”

We live in a country where gender-based violence (GBV) continues to affect countless lives, so two of TFG’s fashion-forward brands — Markham and Exact — are stepping up to use their platforms for forward powerful, lasting change. Beyond selling style, they are writing new narratives of hope, safety and healing by championing community upliftment through bold corporate social investment initiatives.

Markham + ‘What About The Boys’: Redefining masculinity for a better tomorrow

Since 2023, Markham has been with TFG championing a transformative cause, one that aims to address GBV at its roots. In partnership with What About The Boys?, a national movement dedicated to reshaping the narrative around masculinity, Markham is helping South African boys become the changemakers their communities need.

At the heart of this initiative lies a radical yet essential mission: redefine masculinity to promote emotional intelligence, empathy and accountability. Through school-based film screenings and powerful mentorship dialogues across the country, the campaign reaches boys in Grades 8 to 12 – a pivotal age for identity formation. The message is simple but profound: boys are allowed to feel, care and stand up for what’s right.

Each teen who engages with What About The Boys? is challenged to confront stereotypes, connect authentically with others, and make a personal #DoBetter pledge committing to being part of the solution to gender-based violence.

For Markham, this initiative is about more than ticking off a checkbox; it’s an act of responsibility. As a leading men’s fashion retailer with a wide national footprint, Markham is uniquely positioned to reach and influence young men. Its ‘What About The Boys?’ product line – featuring T-shirts and sweatshirts – allows customers to wear their values proudly. With R50 from every T-shirt and R100 from every sweatshirt going to the initiative, fashion becomes a visible vehicle for change.

The goal? To raise R1.35 million and reach thousands more boys with a message that has the power to change a nation. It’s a bold, necessary step towards a future where masculinity is not defined by dominance, but by kindness and courage.

Exact’s Denim Drive – Stitching strength and giving survivors a voice

Exact is focusing on empowering survivors of GBV — one denim donation at a time. The brand’s impactful partnership with the Kolisi Foundation has sparked a movement rooted in sustainability, empowerment and healing.

Launched in August 2024, the Denim Drive collected 800 pairs of pre-loved jeans, which were transformed into handcrafted bags by GBV survivors at the Power2You Centre, a division of the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women & Children in Cape Town. Each bag isn’t just a product — it’s a story of survival, stitched with resilience and dignity.

During last year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign, 200 of these bags were sold at TFG’s head office, with all proceeds supporting the Kolisi Foundation’s work with survivors. But the impact doesn’t stop there. Exact is committed to scaling up the project, providing even more survivors with access to income, creative healing and visibility.

These efforts build on a legacy of meaningful intervention. In 2020, #ExactCares worked with the Kolisi Foundation to begin distributing Power2You Packs — practical safety kits that include pepper spray, a whistle, emergency contact info and a resource-rich journal. To date, more than 9 000 packs have been delivered across four provinces via 20 local NPOs.

Exact’s commitment to the cause has also manifested in-store: proceeds from pepper spray sales go directly to GBV awareness and survivor support. And in a move that reflects real allyship, Exact Clothing has pledged to match every Power2You Pack donation.

Though trials and tribulations may come to light, you can never keep the spirit of a woman down. And these tenacious survivors from Sisters Incorporated prove just that!

Caring for survivors of abuse, Sisters Incorporated has stood as a beacon of hope — in the Southern Suburbs, Cape Town — for over six decades, rehabilitating and uplifting women and their children facing abuse and trauma. The non-profit organisation has been a lifeline for countless survivors, offering more than just shelter, but a pathway to healing and empowerment.

Our country faces a significant challenge in addressing gender-based violence (GBV), with some of the highest rates of rape, femicide and domestic abuse in the world. Last year, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) released the results of the first-ever national GBV survey, which revealed that more than 33% of women have experienced physical violence in their lifetime, while 9.8% have faced sexual violence. This translates into around 7.3 million women having experienced physical abuse, while 2.1 million have experienced sexual violations. The prevalence of physical abuse was found to be higher among women of colour, and about one in four women have been victims of emotional abuse.

With these sobering statistics in mind, Sisters Incorporated takes a holistic approach to healing, offering more than just a safe haven and roof over one’s head. Their overall support system includes immediate refuge, counselling, skills training and specialised services such as homeschooling and a childcare facility. The programme is designed to empower survivors, helping them to heal physically, emotionally and spiritually, and equipping them with the skills needed to reintegrate into society with confidence.

We had the honour of sitting down with three remarkable women whose personal journeys of resilience and recovery were nurtured within the walls of Sisters Incorporated. Their stories are not just about survival; they are about reclaiming power, rebuilding lives and inspiring others to find their strength too.

Mellisa: Mother of Strength

Mellisa Faro

A mom of three daughters, Mellisa Faro always believed she was blessed, well brought up, and never saw herself going through such a dark time.

“I was always advised to make good choices in life. But all that changed after I met my last-born’s father. Our three-year relationship started out perfectly, but things took a turn for the worst”

Her partner fell in with the wrong crowd, which led to drug use and infidelity. “Whenever I confronted him about it, I would end up being beaten by him. I stayed and kept forgiving him, knowing what was happening was wrong, but he would not allow me to leave him.”

Mellisa says a family member saw what she was going through and how she was deteriorating. “I hardly looked like my ‘normal’ self any more. I was drained physically and mentally, which led to me losing weight. My cousin then advised me to seek out a shelter as my situation just worsened.”

Sadly, before that could happen, Mellisa ended up in ICU after a physical assault. This finally prompted her to leave her abusive partner. “When I realised I had to escape before he kills me, all I could think of was my kids. I can’t die — they still need me.”

After being welcomed in by Sisters Incorporated, Mellisa felt right at home. She was offered counselling and extramural activities to help her regain her zest for life. She recounts that she and her daughters received amazing care, new clothes and toiletries, and proper meals — this went a long way in improving her overall health. Mellisa was determined to pick herself up and do better, for her daughters’ sakes.

“I found my confidence again. My scars became beauty marks. My will to do better improved. Sisters Inc helped me get an ID and made sure that I retrieve my matric certificate at the Department of Education. I was even given medical and dental care,” she says in awe.

“During my four-month stay with Sisters Inc, I got a job, and they made sure that I got to and from work safely. And my youngest daughter was taken good care of at crèche.”

After fighting to get her groove back, Mellisa rose above her incredibly difficult circumstances to become a powerful role model to her girls. After living in a shack in an informal settlement for years, she is grateful to finally be back on her feet.

“Today I am a homeowner of a two-bedroom house. With the help of the amazing management and staff of Sisters Inc, I can proudly say I made it. I’m not close to where I want to be, but one thing I can guarantee is that I will get there!” she says confidently.

Her words of wisdom:

“To any woman who feels like you can’t step out of your abusive situation, take that first step, as scary as it seems. The unknown can be very scary — that I am fully aware of! But there is help out there; just take that first step. Don’t give up! You are more than your current situation. You are beautiful, you are loved. You can do better. You can become better. It all starts with you… If I didn’t take that first step, I would not have found myself again. You can find yourself again, too!”

Victoria: Vibrant & vivacious

Victoria Jacobs Swart

Victoria Jacobs-Swart is mom to daughter Tamika and grandmother to a beautiful granddaughter. Born and raised in Delft, surviving the turmoil that many Coloured women face in areas like this, Victoria has put a life of violence and drug abuse behind her now, thanks to the help she was given and the resources she was equipped with.

“It was in April 2024 that I reached out to the Saartjie Baartman Centre. They gave me two contact numbers, one of which was Sisters Incorporated. I communicated with Mrs Nobuntu, the auxiliary social worker, and explained my situation,” she says. “The following day Mrs Nobuntu contacted me to confirm my details and booked a pick-up driver to fetch me immediately and take me to the Sisters Inc home in Kenilworth.”

In her life, Victoria has faced some of the most horrifying incidents of physical abuse. She admits that drugs became a “comfort” and coping mechanism as she felt stuck in the trauma of her circumstances.

“The abuse had made me feel worthless and just not valued as a human being, as an individual,” she says. “It affected me emotionally and psychologically, which led to anxiety and depression. My self-esteem was affected. Constant feelings of shame and guilt almost led to suicide.”

Thankfully, Victoria persevered in her efforts to rehabilitate herself. With constant care and counselling, she managed to pull herself out of the dark hole she had fallen into. Today, she’s all about female empowerment and fostering a sisterhood.

Victoria empathises with anyone who feels alone and isolated, as she knows this is one of the biggest hurdles one faces as someone who has been abused: “Victims need to know, you are not alone. There are many people currently facing GBV. Even if you feel that people won’t understand you, or that what you’re going through is your fault — know that this is not your fault. It is the abuser’s fault,” she says.

“Healing is important and it definitely matters… You asking for help doesn’t need to include the whole world, but your voice alone is life-changing at the end of the day.”

Her words of wisdom:

“To anyone who is still a victim of abuse, go reach out for help, please! It’s never too late. Believe in yourself and what you’re capable of. Embrace the power of collaboration — and as women, support each other.”

Kamilla: A kindred spirit

Kamilla Pretorius

An only child who grew up with her cousins in her grandmother’s house, Kamilla Pretorius comes from a very family-orientated background filled with laughter and joy. A mother of three, she’s been married twice, once to the father of her children, and then to her abuser. Though she has always been a confident and goal-driven person, Kamilla unfortunately faced the horrors of domestic violence, which left her feeling as if her life was over.

“The thing is, if you don’t know abuse, then you won’t recognise if it’s abuse that’s happening to you — if you didn’t grow up seeing it or going through it. I questioned myself so many times: ‘Is this how much this man loves me?’ That’s how little I knew of abuse,” she says.

“Up until the day you don’t recognise yourself — and that could be after a few months or even some years – you become this whole different person, and in that process you lose so much of yourself… things like your confidence, self-worth and, mainly, your self-love.”

It was through finding Sisters Incorporated that she was able to find herself again. “In going through abuse – wanting to leave on one hand and wanting to stay on the other — the trauma affects you so much, to the extent that it’s difficult to trust anyone,” she explains.

“With the organisation entering my life, I was given a firm foundation to start my life over. There was acceptance of what I had been through, and with the support and guidance of Sisters Inc, I was properly prepared to start my healing and restoration process.”

Kamilla believes that it is through the grace of God that she encountered the organisation, having known nothing about shelters and safe houses prior to this.

“Finding them felt like some miracle or breakthrough at the time because it was never my intention to move to a safe house. I just needed to get away,” she says.

Taking it day by day, Kamilla admits that there are still a lot of ups and downs one faces as a survivor of abuse: “The overall experience hits harder than the [actual] abuse, as much as you have healed physically. The trauma lingers on for some time and certain things trigger you every day that never used to. In the beginning it seems like a challenge, but it gets easier. You need know that there is no set time frame for allowing yourself to feel every emotion… Trust your process, knowing that things can only get better from here on out.”

Kamilla’s hope is that other victims realise they have nothing to be ashamed of and that being able to reach out for a helping hand shows real courage. “I can talk whole day about the abuse and what I have been through; the hurt, the brokenness, the betrayal, the list goes on. Yet I can also talk about loving myself and living with love, compassion, peace, joy and hope.”

Her words of wisdom:

“I choose to live with the power of positivity. All of these experiences made me into the woman I am today. Every day is a day of becoming a better me and knowing I’m worth loving. I am not ashamed of my story. I am a survivor.”

A Call to Action

The stories of Mellisa, Victoria and Kamilla are not isolated; they represent the experiences of many women who have found refuge and renewal. Their journeys highlight the importance of organisations like Sisters Incorporated in providing not just shelter, but a pathway to self-healing and empowerment. As we reflect on their stories, let us be reminded of the power of community, compassion and commitment. Supporting organisations that aid survivors of abuse is not just an act of charity; it is an investment in a future where every individual has the opportunity to live free from violence and fear. 13

Vision boards are more than just pretty pictures – they could be the key to translating your dreams from an idea to a lived reality.

In an increasingly vision boards have gained devotees in personal and business spheres. Simply put, a vision board is a collage of images meant to represent goals and desires. The appeal of vision boards lies in the power of the figurative – the chosen images don’t have to be literal. Does the castle you used in your vision board guarantee a future of ball gowns and princes? No. It can, however, represent your desire to move into your dream home one day. While simple in concept, a vision board could be the key to finally taking steps towards your ideal future.

What’s the big idea?

While vision boards may seem as simple as creating a collage of images, they are more than just a decorative fixing on your bedroom wall. Studies published by Lesley University, as well as in the journal Neuropsychologia, have presented compelling evidence that creating a visual representation of one’s goals can create a stronger desire to achieve those goals. In the journal Vision Boards – Redefining Your Journey Through Visualization, co-authors from the Massachusetts Art Education Association suggest that, “This simple act of having complete control over the creation of a tangible product from start to finish starts to shift and change the way the brain has been programmed, giving the artist a sense of ownership and pride, and perhaps hope for what’s ahead.” Vision boards anchor ideas through the process of creating art, which in itself can be a very calming and pleasant process. They can enforce a sense of accomplishment through the creative process, as well as opening new avenues for thinking that you may not have considered before.

Envisioning the vision board: how to make one

The first step is determining what you value the most. Do you want to secure a new job in the next few months? Are you looking to improve your personal relationships? Do you hope to cut back on bad habits and introduce new ones? Make a note of all of these to guide you in assembling your board. What sets vision boards apart from a simple list of goals is the opportunity to dream BIG.

While other forms of goal-setting aim for a more realistic, short-term approach, vision boards give the creator an opportunity to visualise long-term goals along with short-term ones. The cupcake could represent a desire to learn how to bake sweet treats, or could also represent a desire to own a successful bakery – the choice is yours! Keep track of your stream of consciousness: write down your big ideas on your notes app or with a pen in a journal. Remember, this is just an initial brainstorm before the final product – let the ideas flow and don’t get too precious with it.

CREATING A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF ONE’S GOALS CAN CREATE A STRONGER DESIRE TO ACHIEVE THOSE GOALS

The next step is looking up inspiration and choosing your materials. Have a look at magazines or pamphlets around the house that you are willing to sacrifice for a good cause. Apps such as Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok can be a great starting point if you are more prone to internet use. Some of these platforms offer the option to create a collection of images and videos so that you can keep track of what you’re interested in, and even suggest similar content to you via the algorithm, giving you a wider range than the average stack of magazines at your disposal. In terms of assembling your masterpiece, the traditional vision board is made out of printed pictures cut out and assembled collage style. While this is the easier route to take, you shouldn’t fear the digital approach. Programmes such as Canva, Picsart and Adobe Photoshop (amongst many other smartphone apps) offer the user the ability to create a digital collage and then print out the finished product. Feel free to use a mix of media and styles to fit your taste!

How to use it

Display your vision board somewhere prominent in your home so that you see it every day. Perhaps the vision board could be pinned onto your notice board? Stuck to your bedroom wall? On the fridge for you to ponder at while on the hunt for a midnight snack? The key is consistency. Seeing your vision board every day will serve as a reminder of what you’re working towards. Just like humans, vision boards are also subject to change depending on experiences. Feel free to change up some of the minor ideas on your vision board, but make sure to hold onto the big ideas.

Areeba Davids – Beauty Influencer

How would you describe your culture and identity?
As a Muslim woman born in Pakistan, I come from a vibrant society and a rich cultural heritage that combines Islamic traditions with regional customs and practices, which has followed me all the way to South Africa! My love for make-up and skincare reflects my interest in self-expression and taking care of yourself physically and mentally.

What does Heritage Day mean to you?
Heritage Day holds a special significance for me. I truly feel it represents an opportunity to celebrate and embrace my cultural and ancestral roots, creating a sense of pride in who I am and where I’m from.

What are the most important aspects of your culture?
Pakistani cuisine! Ah, I love how diverse and flavourful the food is. It’s known for its rich spices and aromatic dishes, which brings me to how much I love sharing meals and hosting family and friends! I must add, Islam is a central aspect of my culture, influencing my beliefs, values and daily practices. Islamic teachings emphasise concepts such as compassion, modesty, honesty and respect for others. Extending a helping hand and practising generosity towards others are all deeply ingrained in my cultural values.

How do you incorporate your culture and identity into your work?
I take immense pride in the ability to authentically express myself while simultaneously representing and connecting with a diverse array of individuals. It fills me with gratitude to be in a position where I can embrace my true self and serve as a source of inspiration for others. I also love, and think it is so important, when brands emphasise the importance of inclusivity and diversity in marketing campaigns to promote a sense of inclusiveness.

Joanne Joseph – Author

How do you celebrate Heritage Day?
In the last couple of years, I’ve often been roped into participating in a Heritage Day event of some kind. Most often, I’m asked to use my novel, Children of Sugarcane [about an Indian teenager who starts a new life in South Africa], as a launchpad to discuss the importance of preserving our culture, history and sense of identity for generations to come. I really don’t mind working on this day, because there’s so much to explore in terms of tracing our roots and finding a greater sense of identity in them.

How do you incorporate culture and heritage into your storylines and characters?
My characters are caught up in what’s really a hidden, often forgotten aspect of South African history called ‘indenture’ [a form of labour in which people from other countries were brought to British colonies to work on plantations and, ultimately, earn their freedom]. My hope is that the plot and characters succeed in resuscitating this 19th-century history in the most human way, so that regardless of a reader’s background, they can connect with the individuals I write about, their hardships, survival and triumphs. I am deeply committed to the idea of a shared South African and pan-African history and heritage – one that is sometimes difficult to come to terms with, but nonetheless instils in us a measure of respect and pride for where we come from.

How have books influenced your understanding of culture and heritage?
Books have long been my gateway into lives and worlds that started off as entirely foreign to me, but slowly became familiar through the universal truths and strivings of people at the centre of them. Reading has inculcated in me a profound respect for the stories of individuals and communities whose reality may be quite far removed from mine, but which converge in our common humanity. I believe in the importance of bearing witness to one another’s struggles, and I think beautifully written narratives can be so useful in building empathy for another’s life experience.

As a country with a diverse cultural background, how can we rewrite our history to promote unity and acceptance of each other’s cultural identity?
I don’t think we have a sound enough body of knowledge built around our own histories, so that requires intentional expansion. For years, we’ve been brought up on a selective diet of international media and literature that have duped us into believing that our histories, cultures and literature are inferior or unimportant. We need to make a concerted effort to excavate these narratives, to write and publish them, and to work them into school and tertiary curricula so that our children have an equal knowledge of them. Sharing these histories and developing a love for them could be important in building the social cohesion our society so desperately needs.

Zoë Modiga – Musician

How have your family’s traditions influenced your music and creativity?
As a Zulu family, a tradition we’ve always had is ritual slaughtering. There’s something about sacrificing as an offering and an honour that has always stuck with me. I think it speaks to my journey in music in many ways … having to surrender to something bigger than myself as a ritual, an offering, a thanksgiving. Knowing that this has been practised by those before me and those to come is quite an anchor and a symbol of purpose.

What does Heritage Day mean to you?
For me, Heritage Day is a remembrance of who we are. It’s about commemorating our customs and beliefs, and realising that we are a part of an incredible lineage that’s worth respecting, honouring and learning more about.

Music is clearly your soul’s food, but what traditional foods do you enjoy?
I enjoy tripe, amanqina (cow heels), ujeqe (steamed bread), amadumbe (taro), ubatata (sweet potato)… I also love traditional Nigerian dishes, East African food and traditional foods from various cultures. I think the heart of people can be found in the foods they make, so I love exploring that.

How do you try to merge the past and the present in your music?
I believe that, as a storyteller and musician, I am a social scientist. I speak of and reflect the present times in my music, while being a student of and being carried by the iconic musicians that I grew up listening to, who spoke of the same things that I do.

How do you think those in the arts can preserve our cultures in an increasingly globalised world?
Being curious about where we come from is such an important part of preserving and being participants of our culture. The truth is that our cultures are constantly evolving because we contribute to them in real time, in each moment. But if we seek from those that came before us, I think we have a better understanding of ourselves and knowing that we are a part of something way bigger. There are meaningful connections to discover in that.

Soccer fans went wild over Rema’s “Calm Down”, with the dance challenge exploding across TikTok as nurses, teachers, and everyday people joined in.

Water – Tyla

Tyla’s choreographer, Litchi, made everyone sweat with his impressive dance routine. Then Tyla took it to the next level when she spontaneously poured water down her back while singing “make me water” during a performance. After that moment, it became norm to see people pouring water down their backs as they shook it to the catchy tune.

Up by Cardi B

When Cardi B released her catchy hit “Up”, fans took over TikTok. Mya Johnson, along with Chris Cotter, crafted the energetic dance routine that quickly became a sensation. Countless popular creators have since recreated it on their own pages. Now, whenever this song plays, everyone jumps to their feet to show off their moves.

Tshwala Bami

All it took was three guys grooving at home to Tshwala Bam for this dance routine to become iconic. At first glance, it seems like a simple move, but in practice, it’s not that easy. TikTokers unofficially agreed that only the creators of this dance can truly pull off the cool move. The rest of the world can try, but it’s nearly impossible to recreate it perfectly.
