Layered french curl braids

A charming twist on classic knotless braids, with soft, loose curls at the ends, this hairstyle combines elegance and versatility, making it perfect for any occasion. These lightweight braids are scalp-friendly, while their durability ensures they can last for weeks.

On the downside, this style is time-consuming to create. Depending on the fibre used, the curls may also need extra attention to remain defined and tangle-free. Use a mousse or setting lotion to keep the curls looking fresh.

Top tip: Don’t be afraid to experiment with hair fibres in different colours.

Braided ponytail

This timeless choice is sleek and sophisticated. Featuring a single braid gathered into a ponytail, this style is easy to achieve and works beautifully for both everyday looks and special occasions.

It’s a great option if you’re looking for a quick, affordable hairstyle that doesn’t necessarily require a trip to the hair salon.

From LED to air stylers, these are a few innovative devices that make looking good effortless.

From LED masks to air-powered stylers, beauty gadgets are having a serious glow-up. Once reserved for dermatology clinics and pro salons, high-tech devices have made their way into our bathrooms, promising smoother skin, shinier hair, and quicker results at the touch of a button.

But how do they actually work? Are they worth the investment? And are there any hidden health concerns behind the buzz? We unpack some of the latest innovations in beauty tech to help you decide what belongs in your routine.

Led light therapy masks

What it is: LED (light-emitting diode) therapy uses targeted wavelengths of light, typically red, blue, or near-infrared, to stimulate specific skin functions.

What it does: Regular use can help improve tone, texture and radiance — with results developing over several weeks. Many dermatologists use professional-grade versions in-clinic, and while at-home masks deliver gentler power levels, they can still offer visible improvement with consistent use.

Best for: Targeting fine lines, dullness or recurring breakouts. Red light supports ageing skin, blue light suits blemish-prone types, and some masks combine multiple wavelengths for an all-in-one treatment.

How to use: Place on clean, dry skin for 10-20 minutes, three to five times a week. Follow with your usual skincare to boost results.

What to know: Safety and consistency matter. Not all devices are created equal; legitimate LED tools list their wavelengths (red: 630-660 nm; blue: 405-470 nm; near-infrared: 800-880 nm) and specify power output. Masks with too little energy won’t deliver visible results. Look for FDA-cleared or CE-certified devices for safety and effectiveness. Avoid use if you have epilepsy, take photosensitising medication, or are very light-sensitive and eye protection is essential.

Facial steamers

What it is: Facial steamers use ultra-fine, nano-sized steam particles to help open pores and soften impurities. The warm mist loosens oil, make-up residue, and dead skin cells, prepping your skin for a deeper cleanse.

What it does: By improving circulation and hydration, steamers help your skincare products absorb more effectively and give your complexion an instant post-facial glow. Think of it as a mini spa moment that also boosts your skin barrier’s ability to retain moisture.

Best for: Anyone whose skin feels congested, dull or dry. Great for those who wear make-up regularly or live in areas with pollution or hard water.

How to use: Fill the water tank with distilled water, switch it on and let the steam envelop your face for 5-10 minutes. Follow immediately with a hydrating serum or mask to lock in moisture.

What to know: Don’t overdo it; once or twice a week for a few minutes is best. Always cleanse before steaming, and follow with a mask or hydrating serum while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture. Avoid using if you have rosacea or very sensitive skin, as heat can sometimes trigger redness. Maintenance and cleaning of steamers is also key. Always empty and replace the water after each use, as leftover warm water can encourage bacteria growth. After cleaning, allow parts to completely air-dry before storing.

Microcurrent devices

What it is: These handheld gadgets send low-level electrical currents through the skin to mimic the body’s natural bioelectricity. The microcurrents gently stimulate facial muscles, helping to tone and lift from within.

What it does: Often dubbed the “five-minute facelift,” microcurrent treatments can improve contour, firmness and even boost circulation for that post-facial glow. Results are temporary at first but become more noticeable with regular use.

Best for: Anyone noticing loss of definition around the jawline or cheeks. It’s a great option for those who prefer non-invasive, no-downtime toning over injectables.

How to use: Apply a conductive gel before gliding the device slowly over the face and neck. Use for 5-10 minutes, several times a week.

What to know: The scientific evidence behind these devices is still quite limited, and the risk of misuse or unwanted results can outweigh the potential benefits. Avoid it if you’re pregnant, have a pacemaker, metal implants or epilepsy. Always apply conductive gel before use to ensure safe energy transfer, and follow the device’s frequency guidelines to avoid overstimulation.

Airwraps

What it is: An airwrap is a multifunctional hair tool that combines a hair dryer with styling attachments to dry and shape hair simultaneously. Designed to work on damp hair, using controlled airflow rather than extreme heat, it helps you create everything from smooth, sleek strands to bouncy curls and soft waves while minimising heat damage.

What it does: The airflow technology draws hair around the barrel using air pressure, styling as it dries without harsh heat. Built-in sensors measure airflow and temperature to prevent overheating, helping protect the hair’s natural moisture and shine.

Best for: Those who style regularly but want to reduce breakage, dryness, and split ends. Ideal for fine to medium textures and for anyone seeking faster styling with less damage.

How to use: Start with towel-dried hair and apply a heat protectant. Section your hair and choose the right attachment for your desired look — a round brush for volume, a barrel for curls, or a smoothing attachment for a sleek finish.

What to know: Keep the filters clean to maintain performance and airflow. Even with reduced heat, always use a protectant spray for an extra layer of defence.

I recently tested out the Veaudry myAirStyler 2-in-1 and all I can say is I’m converted! How to use: Utilise it once a day with a gentle cleanser, moving in small circular motions for no more than a minute.

What to know: Some brushes simply vibrate rather than use true sonic frequency, meaning you might be paying for buzz rather than benefit. Avoid over-cleansing; once a day is plenty. Replace brush heads (or clean silicone surfaces) regularly to prevent bacterial build-up. If your skin is dry, irritated or inflamed, give it a break until it calms down.

Cryo and heat therapy tools

What it is: From ice rollers to warming wands, these tools harness temperature therapy to revitalise the complexion. Cryo tools deliver a cooling effect, while heat tools encourage circulation and relaxation.

What it does: Cold therapy helps reduce puffiness, soothe inflammation and tighten pores, making it ideal for mornings or after a long day. Gentle heat, on the other hand, boosts blood flow, loosens facial tension and helps serums penetrate more deeply.

Best for: Tired, puffy or lacklustre skin, or anyone looking to ease facial tension and refresh their glow.

How to use: Keep cryo tools in the fridge (not freezer) and use upward motions to de-puff. For heated tools, test the temperature on your wrist before gliding over the face.

Enter niacinamide, a potent ingredient known for its versatility and broad appeal. A vitamin effective for nearly every skin type, its benefits are easy to achieve and it’s simple to incorporate into your skincare routine.

What is it?

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B (B3 or niacin), an antioxidant that “supports many aspects of our health, including cell repair,” says Tzivia Hermann, founder and co-owner of The Laser Beautique. While vitamin B3 is commonly found in protein-rich foods as well as legumes, grains, mushrooms, nuts and seeds, you can also apply it topically through niacinamide-infused skincare products.

What does niacinamide do for skin?

This powerful skincare ingredient has a wide range of benefits:

► Strengthens the skin barrier

Niacinamide helps form a ceramide barrier that locks in moisture, making it helpful for all skin types, including those with eczema or mature skin.

► Reduces redness and blotchiness

It works to calm inflammation, making it effective in reducing redness caused by acne, eczema and other inflammatory conditions.

► Minimises the appearance of pores

By normalising the pore lining, niacinamide prevents the buildup of oil and debris, reducing clogged pores and uneven texture.

► Treats hyperpigmentation

Niacinamide helps lighten dark spots and even out skin tone, promoting a brighter, more radiant complexion.

► Protects against sun damage

It supports the skin in rebuilding cells while also offering protection against harmful UV rays, reducing the effects of sun damage.

► Regulates oil production

Niacinamide helps balance oil production, making it beneficial for both dry and oily skin types by preventing sebaceous glands from producing excess oil.

► Treats acne

Niacinamide is effective in both treating and preventing acne, especially inflammatory acne with papules and pustules, while also improving skin texture over time.

► Reduces fine lines and wrinkles

By both restoring moisture and preventing dehydration, it helps keep skin looking plump and youthful.

► Protects against oxidative stress

Niacinamide helps the skin defend itself against environmental damage, including pollution and toxins, by supporting cell regeneration.

What can and can’t be combined with niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a highly adaptable ingredient that works well with a variety of other active skincare ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, retinol and ceramides. However, certain combinations may lead to irritation or reduced effectiveness, so it is important to know which pairings to avoid.

Niacinamide should not be mixed with high-concentration exfoliating acids like AHAs (glycolic acid or lactic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid) — which are commonly found in cleansers, toners, serums and masks. These acids have a low pH (around 3-4), while niacinamide has a higher pH of 5-7. When combined, the pH of niacinamide can neutralise the acid, reducing its effectiveness and hindering absorption.

In addition, avoid using it with strong alcohol-based toners and benzoyl peroxide.

Niacinamide and vitamin c

Historically, some studies suggested that combining these two antioxidants could cancel each other out. However, recent research shows that when used properly, these ingredients can work together effectively without causing skin issues.

Niacinamide targets skin pigmentation and enhances moisture, while vitamin C lightens dark spots and protects against environmental damage.

If you choose to use both, then it’s best to allow a 10-minute gap between applications to ensure maximum effectiveness, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you’re uncertain about how your skin will react, you should alternate the two by using one in the morning and the other at night.

Tzivia recommends starting with a concentration of 5% niacinamide or less. “Anything above that may lead to irritation and should be used only on targeted areas,” she advises. Instead of jumping straight to a 10% niacinamide product and risking a reaction, begin with a gentler formula.

“Start slowly and ease your way into it,” Tzivia suggests.

Even concentrations as low as 2% can effectively regulate oil production and improve pigmentation. As you gradually increase the concentration, you’ll likely notice more pronounced benefits.

Adding niacinamide to your skincare routine

Adding niacinamide is simple and effective, but the type of product you choose will depend on your skin type and concerns. Here’s how to include it based on your specific needs:

► For dry skin:

Choose a product that pairs niacinamide with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or emollient-rich moisturisers. A toner with a lower concentration of niacinamide can also work wonders.

► For oily skin:

Opt for a lightweight, water-based serum with niacinamide that also includes clarifying ingredients like retinol (vitamin A derivatives), hyaluronic acid or clay (in the case of masks) to help control oil production and minimise pores.

► For sensitive skin:

Look for niacinamide products with soothing, hydrating ingredients such as glycerine or aloe vera. These help calm irritation while delivering the benefits of niacinamide.

► Since niacinamide is so versatile, it is often included in products designed for multiple skin concerns. It can be used both in your morning and evening routines, depending on the formulation. If you’re using niacinamide in the morning, be sure to follow with sunscreen, as it will add an extra layer of protection against environmental stressors.

► Niacinamide is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, making it a great option for women experiencing hormonal skin changes. Just be sure to check the full list of ingredients to ensure there are no other contra-indications.

Don’t believe the hype… we’re cutting through the noise and giving you the real deal on clean beauty

In an era where we’re more we put on our skin, the clean beauty movement is on the rise – and it’s no surprise why. With growing awareness about the potential harm of harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients (to both humans and the planet), many of us are seeking out safer, more sustainable options for our beauty routines. With all the chatter, it’s easy to get caught up in the myths and misconceptions that can be just as confusing as they are convincing. From questions of safety to the effectiveness of clean products, we’re tackling the biggest clean beauty myths that might be standing between you and your best skin – and setting the record straight on what’s really worth buying in to.

Myth #1: Nature knows best

The idea that natural ingredients are inherently better than synthetic ones is misconceived. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s automatically good for your skin — in fact, it can be an allergen or irritant. Most synthetic beauty ingredients are carefully crafted to be highly effective and gentle on the skin, more stable and less irritating. Some of the most effective skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and peptides, can be synthesized in a lab. The key here is to focus on what is actually effective, rather than just assuming natural is always better.

Myth #2: Clean means gentle

Now, the term ‘clean’ has become a buzzword in the beauty industry, but it’s often misinterpreted to mean ‘gentle’. However, they are not always gentle formulas. Clean beauty products might avoid certain ingredients that are perceived as harsh, but that does not mean they’re automatically gentle on every skin. Formulas that contain natural acids, essential oils and citrus extracts, for example, can be irritating and cause redness and sensitivity. In reality, skin type and concerns vary widely from person to person, and what works for one individual might not work for another because some clean products can still strip certain skin types, while others are perfectly fine. Always look beyond the label and focus on the actual ingredients and their concentrations.

Myth #3: Clean beauty is only for certain skin types

Clean beauty is often misunderstood as being only for sensitive skin. The truth is, clean beauty is for everyone. Whether you have acne-prone skin, oily or combination skin, dry or ageing skin, there are clean beauty products out there that can work for you. Just do the research and you’ll find your perfect match.

Myth #4: Clean beauty products can’t last without preservatives

A common misconception. Many clean brands use natural preservatives that are just as effective as chemical ones. From essential oils to plant- based extracts, there are plenty of options that can help extend the shelf life of clean beauty products without compromising safety or efficacy.

Myth #5: Clean means sustainable, eco-friendly and ethical

While it’s true that some natural and clean beauty brands prioritise sustainability, it’s not a hard-and-fast rule that all such products are more eco-friendly. In reality, sustainability is a complex issue that depends on many factors, including packaging, sourcing and production processes. Some natural ingredients might be sourced unsustainably, while certain synthetic ingredients can be produced in an eco-friendly way. So, if you’re all about making sustainable choices when purchasing beauty products then you need to consider the entire life cycle of the product — from sourcing to packaging to disposal. Note, too, that not all clean products are ‘organic’ (which is something that can be properly certified).

Myth #6: It is safer for you

‘Preservative-free, ‘toxin-free’ and ‘chemical-free’ sound reassuring, but they’re often used as marketing gimmicks. The truth is that everything in the world is made up of chemicals. Removing certain ingredients doesn’t automatically make a product safer or more effective. In fact, preservative-free products are more prone to contamination, which can lead to skin issues or even infections. Similarly, ‘toxin-free’ is a term that is often used loosely, as it doesn’t account for the fact that many natural ingredients can be toxic in certain concentrations. Again, it’s more important to look at the actual ingredients and their concentrations. Bear in mind that the term ‘clean beauty’ itself has no official definition, leaving it open to interpretation.

Begin with brow mapping

One of the biggest challenges when shaping your brows is knowing exactly where they should begin, where the arch should lift, and where they should taper off. This can easily be done using a technique called brow mapping. It’s about using a brow pencil (or even the end of a make-up brush) to pinpoint three key areas along your brow line. By following these natural reference points, you’ll be able to shape brows that are balanced, defined and tailored to your unique facial features. The result? Brows that look polished, yet still feel like you.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Find your starting point

To determine where your eyebrow should start, place the pencil (or make-up brush) on the side of your nose and hold it at an angle towards the inner corner of your eye. The pencil should not be over the eye area. Where the pencil edge hits the brow line — this is the beginning of your eyebrow and should be your starting point.

Step 2: Identify your arch

Next, find your arch by angling the pencil from the side of your nose through the centre of your eye. Where it intersects with your brow is where the arch should naturally peak.

Step 3: Locate your tail

Finally, tilt the pencil from the outer edge of your nose to the outer corner of your eye. Where it meets the brow line is where your brow should end. Be careful not to extend the tail too far, as it can visually pull the eyes downwards.

Consider your face shape

Just as brow mapping gives you a personalised guide to where your brows should begin and end, your face shape can help refine how they should curve, arch or taper. Matching your brow shape to your facial structure can subtly enhance your features, bring balance, and create a more harmonious overall look.

Round face

For rounder face shapes, the goal is to add a sense of length and lift. A higher, defined arch helps elongate the face and brings a touch of structure. Use a brow pencil to slightly deepen the peak of your arch and brush brow hairs upward to open up the eye area. A dab of highlighter under the arch will accentuate the lift.

Long face

If you have a longer face shape, aim for balance by creating the illusion of width. A straight, horizontal brow with a soft, low arch works best. This shape helps break up the length and draws the eye outward rather than downward. When filling in, gradually lighten the colour toward the tail for a soft, natural finish.

Square face

Defined by a strong jawline as well as a broad forehead, square faces suit soft, rounded brows. Focus on filling in the middle and blend with a spoolie to balance bold, angular features.

Oval face

Oval faces are naturally balanced, so avoid overworking the brows. A soft angle with a moderate arch enhances symmetry. Lightly fill sparse areas, following your natural shape for subtle definition.

Heart face

For heart-shaped faces, the aim is to balance a wider forehead with a softer, lower face. Opt for gently curved brows with a low arch and fuller body to soften the forehead and complement a narrower chin. Avoid sharp tails and maintain a natural shape for the most flattering finish.

Diamond face

Diamond-shaped faces benefit from brows that soften wide cheekbones and open up the upper face. A curved brow with a softly angled arch helps create the illusion of a broader forehead and a more balanced silhouette. Slightly thicker brows work well to anchor strong bone structure.

How to fill in your brows at home

The next step is adding soft definition and fullness. Filling in your brows doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming; it’s simply about enhancing what’s already there, with subtle tweaks that bring your features into focus. Here’s how:

Begin by brushing through your brows.

Using a clean spoolie or brow brush, sweep the hairs upward and outward, following the natural direction of growth. This instantly lifts the shape and helps reveal any sparse patches, uneven areas or stray hairs that may need attention.

-Trim (if needed).

Use a small pair of brow scissors to snip any long or unruly hairs that extend beyond your natural brow line. Be careful not to trim too much or create an uneven shape.

– Tidy up any strays.

Check for any stray hairs (hairs that fall outside of your natural brow shape) and pluck them using tweezers. Be sure to pluck in the direction of hair growth and avoid over-plucking.

– Fill them in.

Using a brow pencil, powder or pomade in a shade that closely matches your natural brow colour, fill in any sparse areas of your brows. Apply with light, feathered strokes, following the direction of your natural hair growth to mimic real brow texture.

– Blend.

Brush through your brows again with your spoolie to soften any lines and blend the colour evenly. This step makes all the difference as it lifts excess product, evens out any patchiness and leaves you with a natural, well-groomed finish.

-Set.

Apply a clear brow gel to set your brows in place and keep them looking neat throughout the day

Keep your hair healthy and gorgeous — no matter where your journey takes you

Jet-setting takes you over mountains and across shores, exposing you to new worlds. Sun-drenched beaches, bustling cities, tranquil mountains… It’s the stuff of dreams, really. But while your passport gets stamped, your hair might be waving a white flag of distress. From changes in climate to unfamiliar water quality and limited access to your usual haircare products, travel can wreak havoc on your hair’s health and appearance. We’ve rounded up must-have travel tips and tools for your next adventure.

Go compact

Prepare to leave your usual 10-step routine at home – when suitcase space is tight, your haircare routine needs to be compact but effective. Opt for travel-sized products that do double (or triple) duty.

Multi-tasking products like leave-in conditioner with added UV protection can hydrate, detangle and shield your strands from sun damage. You may want to consider solid shampoo and conditioner bars to save space and avoid airport liquid restrictions.

Heated styling tools can also be too bulky to pack in — and you really should not be using them daily during your travels (less heat damage). Give your hair a break by leaving it to dry naturally, and apply a leave-in conditioner or a curl mist to enhance your natural texture. For curly or wavy hair, gently scrunch in product and let your hair dry in a loose braid or bun for added definition.

If it’s a beach vacay you’re planning, pack a reliable detangling brush and comb that can withstand the squeeze of your carry-on bag. A wide-toothed comb is great for gently managing wet hair, especially if days outdoors and in the water will make up most of your itinerary.

Know the climate you’re in

Hair reacts differently to humidity, dryness and how elevated you are. In humid and rainy destinations, anti-frizz serums or sprays will help keep flyaways under control. In dry or icy-cold climates, hydrating products like argan oil or a deep-conditioning mask (used weekly) will be your hair’s saviour.

Not all accommodations are created equal, so it’s possible that the pillowcase waiting for you isn’t made of silk or satin — just in case, pack in a satin scarf or bonnet to wrap your hair in at night and protect it from friction and potential breakage. You can also rock that satin scarf during the day for a chic, protective style.

Refresh on the fly

Between long travel days and new environments, your hair might need a pick-me-up. Keep a curl mist or refresh spray on hand to revive curls and waves. A travel-size dry shampoo can help manage excess oil and add volume if washing isn’t an option.

Remember, hydration is key, wherever you may be — inside and out. Your hair reflects your overall health, and travel often throws off the body’s hydration levels. So, make sure you drink plenty of water (especially on flights), and use a moisturising hair mist or hydrating oil daily to replenish lost moisture from your adventures in the sun, sea or around city pollution.

Your hair deserves as much thought as your outfits when you’re packing. By curating a mini toolkit of essentials — hydration heroes, protective styles and multi-use products —you can maintain healthy, beautiful tresses wherever your time off takes you.

Skip the stress — and the suitcase Tetris! Use these smart packing tips to fit in all your essentials:

Roll your clothes to maximise space (hello, extra room for your favourite hair products!).
Organise using a quality toiletry bag to avoid spills leaking into your luggage.
Ziplock bags are perfect for potentially leaky bottles (air pressure during flights wreaks havoc on lids), tech cables, jewellery or even snacks for the journey.
Bringing heat tools? Check voltage compatibility and pack an adapter to avoid surprises.
Leave space for purchases made on your getaway. Try not to pack your bag to the brim on day one!
