Tips to fix these common make-up mistakes

Say goodbye to these make-up faux pas! From clumpy mascara to overlined lips – these make-up mistakes are easily avoided with these helpful tips.

Mistake #1: Not prepping your face

What is your first step when you apply your make-up? Believe it or not, prepping your face with a good skincare routine is just as crucial for a good face beat as the products you are applying. Not only will it make your skin look great, but your make-up looks much better. “Unfortunately, many people see applying make-up as the only thing they need to do, and when they do not get the flawless look they are searching for, they blame the products,” says make-up artist Julia Dalton-Brush.

@tyasiarenae First things first ! ✨A skincare routine before actually doing your makeup will always work out in your favor it’ll have your skin glowing and ready for all those products ✨MOISTURIZE & PRIME!! It is important to moisturize your face before doing makeup because you don’t want your skin to be dry | feel dry it’ll cause your makeup to look the same way . So show your skin some love . When you prime your face your makeup will last longer ! You will definitely see a difference ✨Having a setting spray that works well with your skin . I use dewy setting spray because I don’t oily skin and I want my face to be not only hydrated but glowing as well ! Find out if you have oily, combination, or dry skin and you can go from there ✨ BROW GEL !! I’m so late to the game but I am in love with my NYX brow gel. This allows your brows to stay in place and not move around when you are out and about ✨Using hydrated foundations !! I’ve always used FITME foundation but when I found that they have dewy brands with vitamin E I was in love ! #fypage #foryoupage #beautytok ♬ DJ SUAVE x OnMyShawty. – The Brandon Isaiah

Mistake #2: Overlining your lips too much

In the quest for a more voluminous pout, things can quickly turn pear-shaped if you overline your lips too much. “We all love a pouty lip, but it needs to be executed right to look real,” When overdrawing makeup, be sure to only overdraw on the Cupid’s bow and underneath the middle of the bottom lip and follow the lip’s natural line toward the edges. I also like to take a touch of concealer to the edges of my lips to really give them a lift bringing the attention back to the pouty centre,” explains makeup artist Jen Tioseco.

Mistake #3: Applying heavy mascara to bottom lashes

Do you apply mascara to your bottom lashes with the same vigour as your top lashes? Although putting it on your bottom lashes can create a flattering doe-eyed look, clumpy mascara creates the opposite effect. When the mascara starts clumping and smudges under your eye, it will make your eyes look smaller and can draw attention to wrinkles under your eyes.

So, what technique can we use to apply mascara to our bottom lashes to make our eyes pop? “Tilt your head forwards [before applying] because that will take your lashes further away from your face on the bottom. This means you can get right in there and do the zig-zag application method, but you’re less likely to get any printing on your face,” advises make-up artist and podcast host Rose Gallagher.

Mistake #4: Applying your make-up in the wrong lighting

If you have ever applied your make-up in a too-dark room, or under fluorescent lighting, your foundation, blush and bronzer (when you catch a glimpse of yourself in natural light) will soon reveal this beauty faux pas. “Natural light is going to [provide] the most accurate sense of how you will look,” says make-up artist Charlie Riddle. “So many times, you hear, ‘I got ready in my bathroom, and [when] I walked outside, my foundation was too dark or too light.’ If you get ready in natural light or in front of a window, you know it’ll look the same.” Not enough access to natural light? Apply your make-up in a room with a warm white LED light, which most closely resembles the outside.
