Braais are not just for Heritage Day, it’s for any day that you spend with your family and friends either celebrating an occasion, or just being together, and with the festive season at our doorsteps, there will be many of those days to come. For those days to come, you need to be prepared! Here are our top 7 braai hacks:
- CLEAN IT UP
Worried your meat will stick to the grid? Simply halve an onion and rub it over a hot grid before braaiing. Alternatively, use a halved lemon to give it a quick clean.
- GET ORGANISED
Use muffin tins to arrange your condiments – one for sauces and another for fresh ingredients and herbs.
- SUPER SOSATIES
Soak your wooden skewers in water for 10 minutes before threading your meat on. This will prevent it from rotating and slipping.
- KEEP BUGS AT BAY
Deter mozzies and flies by making floating tea lights. Fill jars with water and add drops of lavender or citronella, slices of lemon and sprigs of rosemary.
- FOIL TO THE RESCUE!
In a food processor, blitz together some butter, basil and seasoning. Spread generously over
your mielies, onions and sweet potatoes. Wrap them in tin foil and pop them directly on to the coals to cook. Then unwrap and char on the grill.
- FISHY BUSINESS
Arrange slices of lemon, lime or orange on your grid. Pop your fish on top of these and cook until almost done. Char the outside to finish it off before serving.
- BOWL ’EM OVER
To make a bowl from a paper plate, draw a noughts and crosses grid on your plate. With the plate in front of you, cut along the bottom left vertical line. Rotate the plate 90° and repeat. Do this until all four sides are cut. Fold in these flaps and secure with washi tape.
