Enjoy a radiant and healthy complexion all season long!
As the temperature drops and the air becomes drier, it’s essential to adjust your skincare routine to protect your skin from the harsh effects of winter weather. Cold air, biting wind and even indoor heating can all strip moisture from your skin, leaving it dry, sensitive and prone to damage. To winterproof your skincare routine and keep your complexion glowing and healthy throughout the colder months, try these top tips:
Nourish from within
A healthy diet plays a significant role in maintaining radiant skin year-round. Load up on antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, vegetables and nuts, which help combat free radical damage and support collagen production. (Bonus: you’ll also be boosting your immune system.) You may not feel as thirsty as in summer, but remember to drink plenty of water and herbal teas to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
Switch to a gentler cleanser
Harsh cleansers can strip away the skin’s natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Switch to a gentle, hydrating cleanser that effectively removes dirt and make-up without compromising your skin’s moisture barrier.
Exfoliate regularly
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells for a brighter-looking skin and promotes cell turnover. It’s crucial to be gentle with this, especially during winter when skin is more sensitive. Choose a mild exfoliator with nourishing ingredients like fruit enzymes, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and glycerine to slough away dullness without stripping skin of its natural oils. Limit exfoliation to once a week to avoid irritation.
Protect with SPF
Although the sun may not feel as hot or intense during winter, harmful UV rays still cause damage to your skin. Make sunscreen a non-negotiable part of your daily routine, opting for a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) formula with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to exposed areas such as your face, neck and hands to shield your skin from premature ageing and sun damage.
Layer on the moisture
In addition to your regular moisturiser, consider adding a hydrating serum or facial oil to your winter skincare routine. These extra layers of moisture will provide an added boost of hydration and create a protective barrier against the elements.
Don’t forget your hands and lips
The delicate skin on your lips and hands is most susceptible to dryness and chapping during winter. Invest in a nourishing lip balm (with moisturising ingredients like shea butter or coconut oil) and carry it with you to reapply throughout the day. For your hands, use a rich hand cream regularly and don those gloves when venturing outside to shield them from the cold.
