Trailblazing actresses as directors

Some of our favourite TV and movie stars shine just as bright when they’re working behind the scenes. We look at some local and international actresses who have gone on to produce or direct as well.

Nozipho Nkelemba

Nozipho had already made a name for herself in the local entertainment industry by starring in South African TV series such as Heartlines, Rhythm City and Mzansi Love. In 2016, she shifted her focus when she became a casting director for Hustle and, later, for Keeping Score. In 2020, Nozipho won a South African Film & Television Award for her work directing Gomora – which came to no surprise. Nozipho is a fantastic storyteller that speaks to our hearts – in front of – and behind the scenes.

Greta Gerwig

Who can forget the movie that not only took the circuit by storm, but also the fashion and beauty worlds (looking at your Barbie-core dresses, hair, nails and everything in-between). Greta Gerwig is the visionary director who brought Barbie to life. But before she became a director, did you know Greta was a Golden Globe-nominated actress for her role in Frances Ha? We also saw her in To Rome with Love, Jackie and Isle of Dogs.

Angela Bassett

Known for her roles in movies like Black Panther, Angela Bassett has been nominated and received numerous awards for her acting. But she’s also made industry waves as a director for movies like 2015’s Whitney and series like American Horror Story. We’re glad she decided to give it a try because she’s great at it!

See what this actress-turned-director said about her director’s debut for Whitney.

Courteney Cox

We got to know her as Monica Gellar, one of our favourites from Friends. But this talented actress also impressively added director, producer and co-owner of a production company to her list of accomplishments. She made her directional debut with the short film The Monday Before Thanksgiving in 2008 and later directed the drama TalhotBlond ( 2012) and Just Before I Go in 2014.
