According to a leading dating site, beards make men more attractive. And for those who can’t grow one, an expert has a solve…
Does the beard make the man? Not necessarily. But a study among dating adults found that beards are a big turn-on. The Dating.com survey revealed that 86% of respondents enjoy facial hair on men, as it makes them appear more ‘masculine’ and `mature’. Researchers also noted that, on average, men with facial hair in their profile pictures received three times more matches.
A confidence boost
The effect is more than skin deep, with bearded men feeling more confident when sporting a healthy beard, and less insecure about physical imperfections that a beard helps to mitigate. No chin? No problem. Grow a beard. Jawline not chiselled? Let it grow. Bad skin. Good beard. Easy as…
But what if your face only sprouts peach fuzz? The good news is that beard transplants are now a thing. Hirsutes you, sir!
“It’s tough to get your beard game on when you simply don’t have the coverage or thickness that it requires,” says Dr Kashmal Kalan, medical director of the Alvi Armani SA hair clinic in Sandton City, Joburg.
“Your age, genes, ethnicity, testosterone levels, immune conditions like alopecia, your eating habits and even your stress levels can all lead to an inability to grow a healthy beard,” he says.
With Alvi Armani’s FUE (follicular unit extraction) beard and moustache transplants, experts in hair restoration can assist men to achieve the look they’ve always wanted. With a detailed consultation and tailor-made beard and moustache design, clients’ own hair follicles are used in a safe, relatively simple and almost painless procedure.
Dr Kalan explains further: “With the patient under topical anaesthetic, healthy follicles are individually extracted from a hair-rich donor area — typically at the back and sides of the head. They are then individually transplanted into the sparsely covered recipient areas at specific angles to achieve a completely natural effect.
“These follicles will start generating healthy hair after about three months. They also tend to be much more resistant to the factors that cause hair loss and should keep producing healthy hair with proper care.”
Before you sign up
Note that beard transplants aren’t for everyone, and it’s important to have a consultation with a professional to see if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. People with scarring or certain skin conditions on their face (like psoriasis, eczema or severe acne scars) may not be suitable for the transplant. These conditions can interfere with the healing process, affect the survival of the transplanted hair or lead to complications.
