Lindy Lin On Work-Life Balancing

Entrepreneur, make-up artist, wife and new mom, Lindy Lin De Saude chats career milestones, motherhood and celebrating the month of love.

Transkei girl by heart, city girl by profession, Lindy Lin De Saude has nurtured a strong online presence with her ability to engage and educate her audiences. A professionally trained make-up artist, Lindy has a passion for all things beauty. “I studied make-up artistry after high school and it has been an absolute passion of mine ever since,” she explains.

“Weddings are my favourite: being part of someone’s special day and making them feel beautiful is priceless!” From lashes and brush sets to masterclasses and establishing her own studio – she’s done it all. And she’s set her sights on building her empire beyond cosmetics, all while growing and nurturing her own family too.

Pretty And Petite

In 2019 Lindy launched her own eponymous fashion label – an extension of her original beauty business. The brand is inspired by the concept of ‘affordable luxury’, is locally made and sourced, and fully advocates for the empowerment of women and female-owned businesses.

“It all began with me struggling to find garments to fit my petite frame. I always had to have clothes altered or tailored,” she explains. “I prefer to dress for my body type rather than trying to be on trend all the time. And I thought, perhaps other woman in South Africa may feel the same way.”

Since our interview, Lindy has opened a flagship store in Canal Walk, Cape Town, with her garments also available inside the omni-store We Are Egg, which has branches in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. “This year I’d like to grow my clothing brand as much as possible. We have such a wonderful, supportive community that I’m so proud of.”

Comparison is a thief! We all have our OWN UNIQUE JOURNEY to walk

Lindy believes in taking things step by step, practising patience throughout all of her business endeavours. She also strongly urges women who are looking to better themselves to not compare themselves with those who are already successful and living their dream. “Do not become despondent. Comparison is a thief of dreams! We all have our own unique journey to walk,” she encourages. “Most importantly, go out there and find that something that you actually love doing. I’m not saying that being self-employed is easy, but it is definitely a lot more rewarding at the end of the day.”

Finding Her Life Partner

A match made in heaven, Lindy and Joao Paulo De Saude have been inseparable since the day they met. And thanks to Joao’s proposal, and a few online memes, no man can ever again bend down and tie his shoelaces at the V&A Waterfront!

Married for just over two years now, the two lovebirds couldn’t be more excited to spend the rest of their lives together. “Joao and I have been blessed with just over five amazing years together. He is such a wonderful man – whose love language is gifting – so absolutely no complaints there!” she jokes.  “We don’t only celebrate our union during this time of year, but whenever we can. We often do getaways, or staycations even, just to reconnect and constantly put effort into our relationship.

She admits that it has got a little more challenging recently, “with my precious baba in the mix – because now hubby isn’t the only apple of my eye!” They are hoping to travel as a family this year, and perhaps give their son, Malakhi, a sibling in the near future…

Embracing Motherhood

Lindy is keen to build a lasting legacy to pass on to her son, who will be celebrating his first birthday in June – and some big plans are already in motion for that special day. “I somehow always knew I would be mom to a boy someday – I have three brothers, whom I love dearly, and always wished for a son that would grow up to be just like them.  Yes, my hubby and I have had some sleepless nights and tough moments, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world,” Lindy says. “Malakhi means ‘messenger or angel of God’ – and he is an absolute dream! Faith is very important to us, and my and Joao’s only wish as parents is to rear Malakhi as best as we can, with love and kindness, and making sure to bring him safely back to God.”

A Balancing Act

Transitioning from being a content creator who would post daily, and servicing make-up clients, to being a full-time wife and mom running a household has been quite the adjustment for Lindy.

Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is, however, super-important for the new parents. “I do feel we have to prioritise our time a lot more carefully,” she says. “I, as a content creator, have to choose what events I attend, which campaigns I align myself with, and how would it benefit my ‘brand’. I have to think not only as a person of influence, but as a mom and wife now as well. But I have a wonderful support structure and family who are ever-willing to jump in when we do need an extra hand, and I am so grateful for that.”
