Budget-friendly Entertainment

Entertainment shouldn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Here are some creative ways to help keep boredom at bay.

You would think that after months of being confined to our homes, we would have saved a pretty penny or two, but we had to entertain ourselves somehow, right? Whether it was upgrading the WiFi in order to handle all the subscriptions to streaming services (we’re looking at you, Netflix), an ever-growing addiction to online shopping, or the discovery of hobbies such as baking or painting, our entertainment budgets have been taking a bit more strain than usual. And now, with the easing of lockdown restrictions and the understandable desire to take advantage of the little freedom that we have, our budgets are being stretched to the maximum.

But, we shouldn’t have to sacrifice our new-found love for retail therapy or banana bread in order to take part in post-lockdown celebrations. Surely we can have our cake and eat it too? Yes, of course, we can. It all comes down to spending smarter and not harder, and getting a little creative, of course. Here is how you can get the best of both worlds when it comes to living your best life.

Get in Contact

Your network is your net worth when it comes to finding something fun to do. Since we use social media for everything else, why not use your favourite platform to get recommendations from your closest friends. Send the message out that you are looking for local-approved spots or suggestions of cheap (or free) events to attend. People are always wanting to add in their two cents so you might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Out and About

A few months ago, we would have preferred to stay home and watch a marathon of series instead of hiking up a mountain. But, the lockdown has given many people new respect and perspective of the great outdoors, and the countless ways to stay active in our country. If you want to try something a bit more exciting than another hike, why not look for places that offer trial classes for their respective activities such as kick-boxing, ballet, or even pole dancing. You’ll be able to experience something completely different while getting in your daily exercise at the same time. Who knows, you might discover another interest too. If you live near the coast, why not try kayaking? There are quite a few companies that allow you to hire a canoe for a few hours, and some even take you on a guided tour around the harbour. Sounds like fun!

Keep it casual

We don’t need to go to the fanciest places to have a good time, because at the end of the day it is not about where you are but rather about who you are with. Why not take a drive out to the beach or a public park, or a neighbouring town that you have not been to before. You can enjoy a picnic while listening to the sound of the waves crashing or if visiting a town, explore its attractions. Sometimes it is the little things that leave us with the best memories.
