The Nintendo Switch was one of the most highly anticipated products of 2017, and it easily lived up to these lofty expectations and more. It has turned into something of a smash hit and currently outsells both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It’s innovative format: a high-powered tablet that can both dock with your HD TV or pop into your backpack without skipping a beat, has shaken up the industry.
It’s a marvellous machine, with a pin sharp screen and ample horsepower to beautifully render open game worlds. It feels durable and well-balanced in hand.
We think it’s still the champion of motion sensing gaming, a market it single-handedly created with the Wii a decade ago. Add to that Nintendo’s fiendishly enjoyable games like the Zelda, Mario and Pokemon franchises, and it might not matter if the blockbuster first person shooters don’t come on board because the Switch delivers enough pure entertainment value to earn itself a place in your lounge or, indeed, anywhere else you feel like gaming.
In the end it’s really all about the games. Nintendo needs to show that it has a pipeline full of compelling titles, and both casual and serious gamers will join the party.
