TCL is among the biggest global TV makers, although it’s a relative newcomer in South Africa, where it is targeting the entry- and mid-level shopper. This model appears towards the top of the TCL range and has all of the important and useful features in place. It uses micro-dimming across thousands of zones of LED bulbs and supports the main streaming video standards, including HDR and Dolby Vision.
The screen image is not quite as colour rich as on some of our other budget TVs, but there is little else to fault it, and it’s a bargain at the price. This entire package seems targeted at gamers and offers variable screen refresh rates up to 144 Hz, which is automatically activated when you plug in a modern gaming console. Low- latency input is also selected when in Game Master mode, and a pop-up tool bar allows you to toggle extra features like displaying your frames per second on the screen. The sound was decent enough, with a speaker system tuned by audiophile company Onkyo.
Surprisingly, this is the only TV in our line up to feature the potent Google TV operating system which is used for managing TV hardware setup, for downloading video apps from the Play Store and for managing a home page with all of your favourite shows listed by streaming service. Naturally, Google’s own services are foregrounded, so Chromecast, Voice Assistant, YouTube and Google Home are all just one click away.
