Answers to last month’s quiz, September 2023:
1. C. ChatGPT is one of the first AI tools presented for general use on the web. It provides detailed textual answers blending information it collects across the entire public internet. It was created by OpenAI with funding provided mostly by Microsoft.
2. A. Ex-South African Musk owns electric car company Tesla, space rocket company SpaceX, tunneling company Boring, Neuralink for placing computing power in the human body, and Twitter. Tiktok is owned ByteDance and Whatsapp is owned by Meta.
3. B. Hundreds of strands of glass, finer than human hair, make up a fibre optic cable. Data is transmitted as flickering light down these cables travelling, therefore, at light speed. Most broadband in South Africa previously used copper cables, originally installed for the phone system.
4. C. JBL makes well-regarded headphones and speakers, but does not make laptops. Huawei, better known for their smartphones, introduced it’s laptops to South Africa in 2020. Dell laptops are highly regarded in the the business world.
5. B. Wind farms, which use massive propeller-like blades to drive turbines which generate electricity, are taking off in South Africa. China, one of the world’s worst polluters, also has world’s biggest wind farm in its Ghenzou district, see page 15 of our August issue.
6. B. In 2021 Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook, which owns Whatsapp, Instagram and virtual reality company Occulus, would change it’s name to Meta reflecting the company’s ambitions to create broad-based VR platforms, or the “metaverse”.
7. C. According to data from South African research company World Wide Worx, Tiktok is the fastest growing social media in South Africa. The user base grew from 4- to 9 million users during 2021 alone.
8. C. Mario’s brother Luigi is a partner in their plumbing business based in Brooklyn, a suburb in New York. He appears in various SuperMario games wearing green.
9. A. Standing for ingress protection the IP rating indicates how long the phone can be immersed in water, and at what depth. An IP rating below 4 is considered merely splashproof, or perhaps sweat proof.
