Leaving for your holiday but worried about your houseplants? Don’t fret, here are some handy tips to take care of them while you’re away on vacation.
Water thoroughly before you leave
A tall drink of water is the first thing we need after spending a day in the sun. Did you know that plants are the same? The more time they spend in the sunlight, the more water they need. Move your indoor plants to a shadier spot to help them retain water for longer while you’re on holiday. It will help if you group your plants together. Plants release moisture in the air, so all your plants will benefit from the increase in humidity around them.

DIY a self-watering device
Self-watering devices will work wonders for your plants while you are away – and they’re not difficult to make. Use a plastic bottle to make an improvised watering drip system for your potted plants. The water will slowly seep from the bottle each day, making sure that the soil stays moist.

Get a plant-sitter
Most plants will go a week (even two) before showing a decline in health. Are you away from home for more than two weeks? Get a loved one to look after your plant babies while you’re out of town. But choose your sitter wisely: watering your plants too frequently (or forgetting to water at all) won’t be much help either. Before you leave for your trip, ask your chosen plant-sitter to come over and ‘shadow’ you while you tend to the plants. Leave an instruction manual with information about the quantity of water, and when to water your plants.
