5 Tips for an end-of-winter wardrobe detox

As winter wraps up, it’s time for a wardrobe refresh: ditch the heavy layers you didn’t wear, rediscover pieces you love and make space for fresh spring finds.

1. Sort with purpose

Start by pulling out all your winter gear – coats, scarves, sweaters, socks, pyjamas and boots… The lot. Ask yourself five questions about each piece to help you decide whether to keep it or not:

  1. Would I wear this to meet the version of me I admire the most?
  2. Is this item versatile enough to style in 3 different ways?
  3. Do I own something else that does the same job, but better?
  4. Is this from a season of life I have outgrown?
  5. Have I worn it in the past year?

2. Rediscover hidden gems

Winter layers can bury forgotten favourites. Dig through your closet and try on pieces you haven’t worn in a while. That cosy cardigan or classic pair of jeans might spark joy again. Mix and match to see what still fits your style and set aside anything that no longer feels like ‘you’ for donation or sale on Yaga.

3. Organise by season

Pack away heavy winter items you’re unlikely to wear again this season – like puffy jackets or chunky sweaters – to free up space. Use storage bins or vacuum-sealed bags for bulky coats and knits, and if they are not see-through, label them for easy identification next year. This keeps your closet focused on transitional pieces that work for early spring’s unpredictable weather, like lightweight jackets or versatile scarves.

4. Assess what stays

For the clothes you’re keeping, organise them by category – cardigans, tees, bottoms, dresses – or by colour for easy access. Invest in slim hangers or shelf dividers to maximise space. A tidy closet makes outfit planning less stressful and more fun.

5. Introduce some spring-friendly items

Now that you’ve cleared the clutter, identify gaps in your wardrobe. Need a lightweight jacket or a few breezy tops for spring? Make a short, intentional shopping list to avoid impulse buys. Focus on versatile pieces that transition seamlessly into warmer weather.
