A Fresh Coat of Paint

Thinking of giving your home a new lick of paint ? Here are our top tips:

A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into a space and makes for a great family DIY project. To make sure your paint job looks as professional as possible, we’ve rounded up some expert tips.

1. Sand away flaws

The secret to a perfect paint job? A smooth surface of course! Run some fine-grit sandpaper across your walls to even out any bumps or rough patches. The smoother the surface, the better your paint will look on it.

2. Tape tricks

Many of us use the masking tape trick to avoid getting paint on light switches and skirting, but if placed incorrectly you could still end up with paint bleeding through. Prevent any mishaps by running a putty knife over the tape once placed, press down gently as you go along. This will allow for a better seal.

3. Finish one wall before starting another

It may be tempting to do all the corners and trim in a room before busting out the roller to fill them all in, but pro painters caution against this. You’ll get a more seamless look by cutting a single wall and rolling it immediately. This allows the brushed and rolled paint to blend together evenly.

4. Bag it up

Working on a large paint project that’ll take you a few days to complete? This trick will keep your roller from going dry or gunky. Soak the roller in paint then pop the paint covered roller into a plastic shopping bag and tie so it’s airtight. When you open the bag the next day your roller will be good to go. If you’ve finished painting, use a plastic bag to help you remove the roller without covering yourself in paint.
