‘The new normal’… ‘Unconventional times’… These phrases are amongst others that have dominated our world since the Covid19 pandemic. Now, as we begin the hopeful and promising 2023, we’re gifted with this year’s colours: pink, blush, yellow and red! Tile Africa explores some of the colour trends and how to use them in your home.
A Splash Of Viva Magenta
The Pantone Colour of the Year 2023 delivers a punch of bold colour with Viva Magenta. The world is still navigating uncharted waters; businesses adopting hybrid models, and people trying to carve a middle lane between their lives during pre- and post-pandemic. Pantone introduces Viva Magenta as ‘a hybrid colour that comfortably straddles the physical and virtual – evocative of our multi-dimensional world’. How very apt for our evolving world view.
Pantone encourages experimenting with Viva Magenta to make a statement. This vigorous shade of red brings strength and inspiration into design, “Use it with black, white and grey, as a complement to a trending terrazzo pattern, or as a splash of colour in your soft furnishings and towels” suggests Liza Watermeyer, Tile Africa Visual Display Manager.
What Other Colours Are Trending For 2023?
International paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams brings us Redend Point as an ode to softer spaces that are comforting and cozy. Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams’s director of colour marketing, describes Redend Point as “not too light nor too dark, not too moody nor too sweet”. The colour is a neutral beige-blush inspired by earthy tones, which can be used in combination, or alone as an uplifting nod to happier days ahead. “Redend Point is beautifully matched to the classic styling of marble, dark stone, and timeless black and white checkerboard floors” says Watermeyer.
Dulux has taken inspiration from the global focus on the natural world with their colour choice Wild Wonder – a colour that offers “a connection with nature and that brings a sense of natural magic into our homes.” This warm colour is presented with a series of colour palettes, combining with complementary colours to create cohesive spaces. Watermeyer advises that “Wild Wonder lends itself well to natural wood and stone-look tiles, enhancing the earthiness of the colour.”
Other players in the market are also embracing the red palette, like Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Blush, WGSN’s Luscious Red and Jotun Lady’s Statement Red, Poetry Red and Sophisticated Red in their Curated Living palette.
The greens, blues and neutral tones of 2022 continue to trend, with newer shades of yellow like Plascon’s Sunkissed. Each of which draws inspiration from nature, creating soothing spaces for the year ahead.
Whether you find the red-hued tones inspiring and energetic, or prefer the softer natural colours, the 2023 Colours of the Year have something to offer. Start the new year off with a palette of colours splashed with happiness and that bridges the challenges of the past years to the optimism of the year ahead.
