Adding A Focal Point To Your Space

There’s nothing quite like a thoughtfully curated focal point to bring life into your home. Here’s how to select and decorate yours so that it makes an impact

There’s nothing quite as depressing as a bare room, void of any personality. This is why adding a focal point – especially to areas where you entertain or regularly receive guests – is essential to home decorating. Selecting the area that you’d like to be your focal point can be based on a variety of factors, such as an interesting architectural feature, a serene view or a curated wall. And while they sometimes  don’t need much dressing up to make a statement, creating an impactful focal point allows you to express yourself and your personal style – all while maximising and breathing new life into your space.

Choosing Your Focal Point

The accent wall
An easy way to draw the eye to a certain area in the room is to create an accent wall. This could be painted in a bold shade or something slightly different from the rest of the interior. It’s not just paint that can bring a wall to life, though. Consider other options such as a textured wallpaper or wood finish to add contrast.

An interesting artwork
Not only can a great work of art or sculpture make a wall stand out but it can speak to your personality, too! You don’t have to stick to artworks either – a wall covered in decorative mirrors or even a collection of photographs can be just as eye-catching when well curated. Choose frames in one colour to tie your gallery wall together.

A vintage furniture piece
Nothing grabs the attention of yourself and your visitors quite like a statement piece of furniture. Although there are modern varieties available – at a price! – online marketplaces that sell used goods can be a treasure trove when it comes to finding one-of-a-kind vintage items. Also, they are often cheaper than brick-and-mortar stores.

A decorative shelf
Who doesn’t love a carefully curated shelf? They make for the perfect #shelfies for your social media feed, too! Choose items of a complementary colour palette and of different shapes, sizes and textures to create contrast. Then, arrange the items by layering them with
taller items at the back and smaller ones near the front.
