Combining light and dark tones adds contrast and interest to any space.

When using primarily neutral tones in a room, the trick to ensure it looks anything but dull is to mix dark and light shades. Add charcoal cushions to a cream couch or play with light flooring and darker walls or vice versa. Start with your floor and wall colours, from there decide on larger furniture pieces before finalising smaller accessories.
