With a new season comes new possibilities and new design ideas. We take a look at the freshest trends for spring.
Japandi
This is the perfect fusion of functional Scandinavian furniture with minimal Japanese design. There’s a sense of serenity
in each clean line and natural finish. Given the chaotic couple of years we’ve had, it’s no wonder this soothingly simple trend is on the rise. To incorporate this style into your own home, focus on furniture and accent pieces that have natural finishes and muted colours. The idea is to make the space feel uncluttered but still warm and inviting.
Curves ahead
The ’60s and ’70s were defined by bold patterns, big shapes and brightly coloured, space age-style furniture. Whether you hate that aesthetic or think it’s ‘Groovy, baby!’, we are here to tell you it’s on the way back – luckily, with a 2021 update. One of the trends this is most clearly evident in is curved furniture. The sinuous edges of these pieces create a softer, more conversational space within the home. This look is bold, almost artistic, and definitely makes a statement.
Colour(s) of the Year
Every year since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has selected a shade that it believes will represent the zeitgeist for the coming months. For 2021, they chose the combination of ‘Ultimate Gray’ (a cool concrete shade) and ‘Illuminating’ (a punchy yellow), describing their selection as ‘a marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting’. So, perfect for 2021 then! If you’re giving your living space a spring refresh, be aware that these colours can be incorporated into any room in the house. ‘Illuminating Yellow’ will brighten up kitchen cabinetry or make your bathroom pop, while ‘Ultimate Gray’ lends moodiness to the bedroom and gravitas to your #WFH study. However you choose to use them, they’ll work harmoniously with one another to create a trendy but elegant space.
Indoors Out
Don’t neglect your outdoor spaces! You’ll be spending more time in them as the weather warms up and the sun comes out. To create a comfortable outdoor lounge or dining area, start with furniture that’s durable and able to withstand the elements. (You can always dress these up with cosier items and indoor throw pillows while you’re out there.) Next, smooth the transition from inside to out by including plenty of greenery and plants in gorgeous pots.
Comfort is Key
Thanks to the pandemic, home is definitely where the heart is. Now that we are mostly working, studying, dining, relaxing, exercising and entertaining at home, you want to plan your space to accommodate all these tasks in the most comfortable way possible. If you are investing in furniture, be sure to prioritise comfort instead of style alone. Create a sense of cosiness with neutral but warm-toned colours, and soft textures. The idea is to curate a space you will feel happy and excited about spending so much time in.
