Have you recently downsized or moved into your first apartment? Are you aiming to find a clever solution for a multi-use space? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of the above, you’re probably conjuring multiple ideas about how you can utilise your small space more efficiently. While most living-space hacks can get a bit DIY-ish, there are a few simple furniture solutions to solve your spatial woes. The answer: multifunctional furniture. Here are our five tips for a smarter space.
It Starts with Storage
Your home, like those of many others, is a crafty jigsaw puzzle and everything you choose to fill it with needs to have a place. While the thought of simply shoving your valuables in that handy junk room (or junk drawer for those with a smaller space) might have crossed your mind, there are clever ways for you to store your possessions while still avoiding the build-up of clutter. Storage baskets and trunks are the way to go. These storage units masterfully house unsightly computer cables and tech, bundles of blankets, books or collections of chewed-up pet toys. Don’t leave the items in storage bins and forget about them, though. Try taking it to a bookshelf: Neatly arranged, keep your most frequently used items at arm’s length, with those that aren’t used daily placed on the top shelf. If your space is far too small to house a bookshelf, opt for a few storage ottomans instead. It’s a great way to make storage part of your decor.
Going Low
Have free space under your bed? Consider putting your winter coats, clothes and bedding in storage bins that fit perfectly in this space. Be sure to use dust-proof bags, if possible.
Take It to the Walls
When floor real estate is in high demand at your home, make the most of your empty walls. Aim to fill the space with shelves and storage hooks. Decorative floating shelves are not only practical but add an extra layer of texture to your walls, too. It can be used to store books, plants and even a few valuable trinkets. Similarly, storage hooks are cleverly devised to save on space. Place a few in your entryway and it becomes a place to put your keys, and hang your bag and coat.
Hook it Up
Use command hooks to maximise the space behind doors. It’s a great place to hang coats, bags and piles of grocery bags. It also helps when renting a home to avoid wall damage.
Don’t Let It Show
Have you heard of nesting tables? Here’s what you should know: They are highly versatile, stackable and great for saving space without compromising on style. They can be used as side tables, end tables, coffee tables and may even be used in the bedroom as a nightstand. Still not sold? It is worth noting that nesting tables are easy to pull out to increase your space when entertaining. The versatility factor is what makes them as popular as they are. From Seat to Bed You’ve most probably slept on a sofa bed at least once in your life – perhaps while spending the summer with family, or spending the night at a friend’s apartment. This means you already know how handy this dual-purpose piece of furniture can be, especially for those trying to maximise space. But what is it? It’s a sofa that can be easily converted into a bed. When having additional guests over, sofa beds offer the added sleeping space when rooms aren’t enough. So if you don’t already have a sofa bed, we suggest you add it to your online shopping cart!
Carefully Curated
It’s important to give some thought to the visual appearance of your space. Once the ‘junk’ is packed away, you can then skilfully curate your decor to create a space that is pleasing to the eye. When considering the overall look of your space, remember that while items may be aesthetically appealing,
Make a Nest
Nesting tables are very practical as they can be used in various spaces. If space is limited, separate and use them as standalone tables instead.
