How to build a capsule wardrobe

If you aim to reduce costs and save time? Then we suggest investing in a capsule wardrobe.

Living in a world where fashion is a fast-paced industry, and trying to keep up with all the trends can be quite time-consuming. However, with sustainability playing an increasingly important role in fashion, many are focusing more on quality over quantity, by adopting a curated wardrobe and investing in pieces that will last longer. Capsule wardrobes are all the rage and people associate them with minimalism, organisation, and, most importantly, ease.

What is a capsule collection?
In a nutshell, a capsule collection is a limited number of core items in your wardrobe that you can mix and match for every occasion. This allows you to invest in good-quality items that could be useful for a longer period of time, without breaking the bank. It’s important to ensure that all your items can work together, including some separates that could be season-specific. By narrowing your wardrobe, you will eventually be able to define and understand your style so much more.

How many key pieces should you invest in?

There are no real rules – some say 10, while others prefer 40. It all boils down to the lifestyle and needs of the individual. It is, however, important to know that you should make sure that these items fit well and cater to your comfort needs. Your capsule collection should consist of a combination of items you already own and love to wear, as well as new, quality items that you can shop for once a season.

For most women, this combination will include some of the following: a pair of tailored trousers, denim jeans that look good with heels and flats, a neutral shirt, T-shirts for layering, a little black dress, a trench coat,  high heels, and a pair of boots. After that, you will need to add in a few seasonal pieces depending on the time of year, such as good-quality knitwear, a warm coat, or camisole tops. If you do introduce new pieces into your capsule wardrobe make sure that they work with what you already have and can be worn in a variety of ways.

Where to start?
Before starting your capsule wardrobe it’s a good idea to reduce your current wardrobe. When was the last time you went through your clothes and cleaned out what was in your closet? If it’s been more than a year, then this is your first order of business. Whether you donate or sell the items that you don’t need is completely up to you. Building a capsule is a lot easier when you’re already working with less pieces of clothing.

Are you scared of capsule wardrobes being too restrictive and boring? Don’t fret! Capsule wardrobes are not a one-style-fits-all approach. It doesn’t mean you have to suddenly wear only one colour, shun all prints and go spend lots of money on a bunch of items you’d never pick out otherwise. The beauty of it is that you choose these items, so choose what you love.
