4 tips to level up your salad game this spring

Tis the season for sunshine, fresh air and colourful blooms. Tis is also the season to enjoy fresh produce and bright flavours. Swap out your winter comfort foods and make your spring salads stand out from the rest with these great tips.

Get creative with your greens

Gone are the days when you only use butterhead, crisphead or romaine (the star of the famous Caesar salad) lettuce for a fresh salad. Get creative and ditch the lettuce for other leafy greens like kale, spinach, mustard leaves, rocket or watercress.

Read about these 4 ways to make leafy greens the hero of your meals!

No leaves? No problem

Variety is the spice of life. So, when you need a break from your usual leafy salad, turn to your stove or oven. Cooking the components for your salad makes it more dynamic. Bulk up your salad with roasted vegetables like butternut, sweet potato and mushrooms. Mix them with raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots and radishes to give your salad some crunch. You can even roast dates for natural sweetness. Yum!

Make these seriously good salads at home.

Balance out your salad

Your salad is like a seesaw. Add something to soften up your salad if it’s mainly crunchy, like avocado, roasted vegetables or feta cheese. Need something sweet? Cut up fruit like strawberries, pears or add dates. Every ingredient in your salad should contrast the other components to balance it out.

Don’t forget about the dressing

Dress up your salad! Dressing doesn’t only add delicious flavour to your meal, it also helps you absorb the fat-soluble nutrients in your ingredients. A trick to keep your fresh greens from getting soggy is to put your dressing at the bottom of your salad bowl. To further enhance your flavours, add crunch to the dressing. Finely chop some nuts and stir them into a vinaigrette to get into those nooks and crannies of all your components.
