Voting Day: 5 ways to prep for election day

The buzz around this year’s elections is sky-high, with many comparing it to 1994 – and we all know how monumental those elections were. It goes without saying that prepping is essential.

Get your docs in a row

Your South African ID (and knowing your voting station) are crucial on voting day. Your valid ID is your entry pass – no ID, no vote. Don’t leave home without it. Your voting station should have you in their register. (To check which station you’re registered at, SMS your ID number to 32810.) Before you are given ballot papers to cast your vote, your name will first be checked on the register.

Stay hydrated and nourished

Pack some fruit, nuts and biscuits. Add chewing gum or mints to keep your breath fresh and bring water in a refillable bottle just in case. It’s better to over-prepare with snacks and hydration than to under-prepare. You don’t want to cast your vote hangry and dehydrated!

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must! Bring it along in case you spend hours in a line outside. Remember to reapply it every two hours for maximum protection. Even though we’re voting in May and the sun isn’t as strong as in summer (and even if the sky is overcast), its rays are still harmful. Protect your face from sun damage and premature ageing.

Wear comfy shoes

You might be standing for a while before your turn comes, so make sure your shoes are comfortable enough to withstand the queue. A pair of sneakers, your trusted slides or that pair of Crocs you always grab because they feel like you’re walking on clouds… any style will do as long as they’re kind to your feet.

Be strategic with your nails

After voting, your thumb gets inked as proof that you have voted, so it’s important to be mindful of your nail colour. The ink needs to be visible, so avoid dark colours. And if you’re planning to get a fresh set of bright nails, just know that your inked thumb won’t look as neat on a new manicure. So be strategic with your next nail appointment.

Charge all your devices

Do this before you head out to vote – just to cover the hours of scrolling and messaging in the queue. You never know how long you’ll be out there for, so charge everything.
