Jimmy Nevis, an alternative pop singer, songwriter and producer from Cape Town, has been making waves since his rise to stardom in 2012 with the release of his hit song ‘Elephant Shoes’. The road was not an easy one for the ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’ singer. In 2012, he approached various radio stations in the hopes that they would air one of his songs. Following the disappointment of not being accepted to study within his field of choice, architecture, he was determined to make his dream of making music a reality.
With Jimmy Nevis rising to the top, it goes without saying that we’d have a brief chat with this legend.
‘Maintaining self-worth through this hurricane of an industry is quite a mission, I won’t lie. Aside from my successes in life, I’ve experienced lots of rejection and have lost many good friendships. It’s so easy to take these things to heart and it’s tough because music is so personal to me.’
In order to stay afloat in any industry and life in general, Jimmy Nevis shares that it’s important to know yourself. ‘Self-discovery is bigger than you. Make sure you take the time to know what you stand for, what you want and who you want to be.’
For anyone struggling to live their dream, Jimmy shares a few words of encouragement. ‘Don’t just wait for tomorrow. It’s so easy to procrastinate, but that will only hold you back. Take a chance and make a start. You don’t need to know exactly what you want, but you need to take the first step.’
