3 summer skincare survival tips

The warmer weather is finally here! But what does that mean for our skin? Follow these three tips to keep your complexion glowing and protected all summer long.

Lather up with SPF

If lathering up with sunscreen is not part of your everyday skincare routine, it’s time to change that immediately. It’s crucial that you use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher during the hotter season to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. “It is also important to note that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every couple of hours, so make sure to pack extra sunscreen for longer summer days outdoors,” says dermatologist Omer Ibrahim. And don’t forget those tricky places like the back of your neck and behind the ears!

As the weather warms up we’ll be spending more time outside, but remember SPF should be the last step of your morning skincare routine whether you’re spending time outside or inside! #spf #sunscreen #hybridsunscreen #howmuchsunscreentoapply #cocokind ♬ Creekside – ultmt. & Hz.

Keep your moisturiser light

Still using that heavy, extra-hydrating moisturiser you used during winter? Ditch that for a lightweight moisturiser, something that is water-based and quick to absorb into skin, to eliminate residual film and greasiness. “Increased temperatures and elevated humidity tempt skin to pump out more skin oils,” says dermatologist and founder of DERMAdoctor Dr Audrey Kunin. She adds that applying a heavy moisturiser in these conditions creates a perfect storm where pores become smothered, which increases the risk of breakouts

Exfoliation is key

Say goodbye to a dull complexion and hello to brighter and smoother skin when you scrub regularly. “Exfoliation promotes forced cell turnover, allowing old dead keratinocytes to shed and new healthy skin to come towards the surface. It is key to exfoliate as regularly as your skin can take to keep it as smooth, bright and healthy-looking as possible,” says Pamela Marshall, co-founder of Mortar & Milk skin clinic.

However, it should be done with caution. The sun can be harsh on your skin during summer, so be careful not to over-exfoliate(when you exfoliate too often). “If you are exfoliating the skin too often, the skin’s barrier function can become compromised. Skin can become dehydrated and capillaries can become damaged. It can ultimately make acne worse,” she explains.
