Cold air, dry skin and dull tones? Not on our watch. From upping your hydration game to switching foundation shades and leaning into blush and bold winter hues, these pro-approved make-up tips will see you through winter.
1. Prioritise hydration
Before you even apply any make-up, it helps to start with a healthy base and that means adapting your skincare routine to compensate for the drier winter air. In Vogue, celebrity make-up artist Robert Sesnek says “dry and oily skin both need hydration, especially in the winter months. Just figure out which works best for your particular skin type and regimen. I find that most people can go a little heavier and up their moisturiser game in the colder winter months.” Consider switching to a heavier moisturiser or adding a serum to your beauty routine over the winter months.

2. Switch out your foundation FTW
“Many people continue to use the shades of foundation and concealer they used all summer, but most people tend to change shades during winter months,” says make-up artist Brandi Boulet on SheFinds.com. “This leads to make-up looking like a mask, and you will notice a stark difference between the face and neck colour. The best solution is to have a winter foundation match and a summer foundation match. That way you have two colours that suit your skin throughout the season, and you can mix them to match your skin for the in between time.” Another tip? Add a few drops of facial oil to your foundation to prevent dryness.
3. Blush rush
“Add a little extra blush,” says make-up artist Nikki Wolff in Glamour magazine. “Sweep it across your nose, too, for that healthy, just-been-outside flush. Flushed cheeks in the cold are super pretty and youthful. Oh and wear lots of lip balm!”

4. Play with deeper colours
“Winter beauty for me has always been about embracing a more sultry, moody vibe and making sure my skin is hydrated and glowing,” says Donni Davy, head make-up artist on Euphoria and co-founder of Half Magic Beauty, on Byrdie. “Glowing skin is so not just for summer! I love browns and deep reds on the lips, something super shimmery on the eyes.”

5. Sprinkle some fairy dust
“The fairy dust eyeshadow trend is perfect for the winter season,” says make-up artist Kasey Spickard, also on Byrdie. “This category of shadows are finely milled, high pigment-load shimmer shadows that give an intense twinkle or an almost ‘wet,’ slick look to the lids.”
