5 mistakes you’re making with your winter skin

Winter can be harsh on your skin, often leading to dryness, irritation and a dull complexion. Avoiding these common mistakes can keep your skin healthy and glowing all season.

Skipping sunscreen

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean the sun’s harmful UV rays aren’t affecting your skin. Neglecting sunscreen during winter can lead to premature aging and sun damage; make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even on cloudy days.

Using hot water

While a hot shower or bath might feel great on a cold day, hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Go for lukewarm water instead and limit your shower time to preserve your skin’s moisture barrier.

Neglecting hydration

Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, especially in winter when the air is dry. Drinking enough water and using a humidifier in your home can help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Additionally, choose a hydrating moisturiser and apply it immediately after showering to lock in moisture.

Over-exfoliating

Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells but overdoing it can damage your skin’s protective barrier and lead to increased dryness and sensitivity. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week and use a gentle exfoliator suited for your skin type.

Ignoring your lips

Your lips are particularly vulnerable to the cold, dry winter air. Failing to protect them can result in chapping and cracking. Use a lip balm with hydrating ingredients like shea butter or beeswax and reapply throughout the day to keep your lips soft and smooth.
