Looking for tips on how to maintain healthy, shiny and moisturised hair? Look no further! The colder months are fast approaching and this calls for a much-needed hair routine switch-up. When autumn and winter come around, it’s incredibly important to take extra precautions to keep your hair looking healthy, shiny, and moisturised. Here are a few simple steps you can take:
1. Invest In Quality Haircare Products
During these colder seasons, we tend to use more heat styling tools to achieve different polished hairstyles through the season. As a result, heat damages your hair, causing breakage and split ends.
If you’re not a fan of going au natural, then it would be best to try and incorporate a few hair protection products into your haircare routine (protector, serum, mousse, or cream). In addition, the dry, chilly air can cause your heat-styled hair to become static and frizzy, as a result of moisture loss.
Less frequent washing will keep the hair’s hydration, but when you do wash your hair, use products that contain moisturising oils such as shea butter and coconut oil.
2. Get A Trim
Weather conditions like rain, cold temperatures, and even indoor heating, can harm the health of your hair by making it weak, fragile and dull. The answer? Get a trim. When you trim your ends, you’re getting rid of some of the damaged parts of your hair.
This will make your mane look healthier overall. If you are new to trimming, it’s a good idea to trim your hair every four months or so, but if you want to try and retain length then you could trim your hair every six to eight months instead.
If you need to touch up your colour, autumn is the ideal time to do it! In fact, the milder weather will extend the life of hair colour.
3. Remove The Frizz
Add moisture to your hair to reduce frizz. Using taming and moisturising treatments is one effective technique to control frizz (anti-frizz serums, anti-frizz oils, anti-frizz sprays or an anti-frizz shampoo and finishing treatment).
Don’t forget to use the best product for your hair type. If you have fine or thick hair, select a shampoo and conditioner corresponding with your specific hair and scalp needs. Be mindful of what ingredients your products contain, especially if you have sensitive skin.
4. Let Your Moisturised Hair Hang Loose
It’s preferable to let your hair down or simply pin it up as we move towards cooler temperatures. A tight bun or ponytail will increase the chances of severe hair breakage. If you have to wear your hair up, use a soft scrunch or hair pins.
Also, shielding your hair from the sun, wind, and other environmental factors, will also maintain hair health. A hat or scarf should do the trick.
5. Use A Treatment
Give your hair some TLC by incorporating hair masks and treatments into your haircare regime at least once or twice a week. Hair masks can soothe and moisturise your locks, leaving it feeling softer, silkier and looking shiny. These treatments can really revitalise your strands and cuticles, helping your moisturised hair resist the elements of the colder seasons.
