Curls, cuts & fros: In the age of social media and trends that came long after most of the posters lining the walls of your local barber, we’re here to give you some ideas for a great season of hair, if you’re not hiding it under hats in cooler weather that is!
If you think women are fussy about who to trust with their hair, men are far more careful with who cuts, fades and shapes their hair. One does not simply send a man to a barber as a treat – you have to present listings, ideas, a photo portfolio of the stylist’s skills and results, and then let them simmer in indecision for two to five working days prior to an appointment.
And let’s be real, the best cuts are from the wise, streetwise uncles and their choice protégés in their local neighbourhoods where getting a cut includes a long, chatty wait in the barber because appointments are inconceivable.
The FRO
Who doesn’t like a well-cared-for fro? The fro is back and it is meticulous. Soft and beautifully shaped, this style benefits from regular oil treatments and a scalp treatment oil to keep your hair and scalp nourished.
Top tips for your Afro: Properly shampoo your Afro at least once a week and give your hair a break from comb-outs in between refreshing your style.
The FLAT TOP
Make this look retro with clean, close-trimmed edges to show off your length and draw the eye to the shape and texture. Leave a good conditioner on for a little longer before rinsing it off to reduce breakage and split ends for the daily shapely comb-out.
The DREADS
Dreads have always been a great look and unbeknownst to many, somewhat of a long-term maintenance commitment. Switch it up with braided styles and be sure to use a light, nourishing product to keep the locks looking fresh without instant build-up. A clarifying shampoo is first prize for keeping your scalp and roots squeaky clean.
The FROHAWK
Popular with the ladies too, this fun, versatile style packs a visual punch. Whether you opt for a soft, combed fro or a more textured one – a salt spray helps keep shape without taking all the natural movement out of it.
The SOFT CURL
A great style for softer curly textures as well as floppy, smooth ones, a leave- in product that adds a bit of shine is fantastic for locking in the curl while maintaining natural movement. Paired with clean sides and a semi groomed beard, you’re set for any occasion even just taking virtual meetings from home.
The CORNROW
Cornrows are great for a change-up that’s easily maintained without having to comb out and reshape daily. Here the key is covering them when you sleep and using a good oil-based product to keep your rows smooth and scalp flake-free for longer.
Top Tips For Your Cornrows: Constantly moisturise your scalp and don’t keep cornrows for more than four weeks at a time. Take breaks in between to reduce overall breakage and dryness, plus be gentle with the hairline. Opt for peppermint, castor or coconut as moisturisers.
