A closer look at Johnny Depp

Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka, Mad Hatter – the list goes on. However, this American beau is more famously known for his role as ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’. The new addition to the film series, Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, has just graced South African screens and we’re so excited to get a glimpse of the mischievous pirate.

In celebration of the film’s highly anticipated release, we’re zooming in on the Depp and checking out some details we never knew about the whimsical fellow.

We should all be thanking Nicolas Cage right now. Cage helped Johnny break into acting after hooking him up with his very first agent.

He is a man of many talents. Despite being a great actor, Johnny also happens to be a great musician, and played the guitar for quite a few Oasis’ songs, the soundtrack of Once Upon A Time In Mexico and the romantic film, Chocolat.

For the role of ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’, Johnny underwent a long procedure to receive large-scale gold capping of his teeth. Talk about method acting!

There’s a fossil named after Depp! A fan of Depp, British scientist David Legg, discovered a 505 million-year-old claw-like fossil that reminded him of the Edward Scissorhands character. It was then decided that the fossil be named ‘Kooteninchela deppi’.

Surprisingly, Johnny was actually allergic to chocolate as a young child growing up in Owensboro, Kentucky, in the United States of America. The funny thing is that this allergy went away when he reached adulthood – thank goodness it went away otherwise we may have never seen his awesome portrayal of ‘Willy Wonka’ in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
