Makeup is something that most women have an interest in these days – unless they’re completely against the idea of accentuating their facial features with cosmetic products.

Along with all the powders, creams and lipsticks, every gal has her very own stash of makeup tools and gadgets.

We’ve put together a simple list of tips to follow to make sure that you’re using your brush kit correctly and safely.

Your collection does not need to consist of a large array of expensive, on-trend, branded makeup brushes. You simply need the basics, such as a powder, foundation, blending, and spooly brush (to keep those brows at bay). If you’re more interested in attempting styles that require a certain technique, such as the cut crease eyeshadow look, then precision brushes will be a great addition.

Brushes with synthetic bristles (man-made) are great for liquid or cream products becaus ethey do not have cuticles that soak everything up. If you’re opting for natural bristles (made from animal hairs), then they’re great for powder cosmetic products, but do make sure that they are cruelty-free tools.

If you’ve become quite the pro and happen to do makeup for friends and family, then it is advised to use a separate, clean set of brushes, as everyone has unique facial oils that you do not want to be passing on to the next person.

Always clean and maintain your brushes! The bristles get packed with oils and bacteria over time and you do not want to be filling your pores with this junk. Pop in at your local cosmetic store or pharmacy to purchase a brush cleanser, or simple use hand wash or a cleansing soap to clean your bristles. Remember to not soak the entire brush (only wet the bristles) as this could ruin your tools.

A simple clean does not always get all that nasty stuff off of your brushes. For deep cleaning, use luke-warm water and baby shampoo to disinfect your bristles.
