The brogue is, quite frankly, not everyone’s go-to-shoe when it comes to being a glamorous fashionista. However, this low-heeled, plain-looking footwear is actually bang on trend at the moment.
In the contemporary fashion world, brogues have been elevated to new heights. In celebration of the brogue’s new-found popularity, we decided to put together a few stylish looks for you, created with Foschini fashion items, to consider adding to your closet this season.
Emerging from humble beginnings, the modern brogue was once a rudimentary shoe that developed its roots in Scotland and areas in Ireland. The term “brogue” was, at that point in time, utilised to refer to a form of countryside walking shoes, and was developed from the Scottish term, ‘bróg’.
Since the start of the 19th century, brogues were considered to be the essential footwear of the working population and was not given high status. It was only much later on that the bourgeois class accepted the item as one of their own.
This shoe is quite versatile in nature and pairs well with various everyday wardrobe options – even the rich and famous are investing in a pair or two! Suitable for both men and women, it was initially assumed to be a male wardrobe essential.
However, today various new designs have been invented to accommodate the feminine foot – in multiple colours and patterns. Incidentally, today there’s basically a brogue for every personality and occasion!
