The fashion world was stunned this week when the Céline Instagram account posted their new logo after completely erasing all their previous posts for a full rebranding. Who’s the culprit behind it all? Céline’s creative director, Hedi Slimane; the successor of Phoebe Philo. Possibly the big shocker of the entire rebranding: the dropped accent in the Céline name, making it just Celine. Slimane has done this once before with Yves Saint Laurent when it became Saint Laurent. With regards to the Celine change, the fashion house took to Instagram to explain it. “The accent on the “E” has been removed to enable a simplified and more balanced proportion, evoking the Celine collections of the 1960’s where the accent wasn’t used often.”
Lady Gaga has recently endorsed a rebranded Celine product in Paris with Hedi Slimane’s first Celine bag, featuring gold hardware, a monogram tag and a structured silhouette. The bag is expected to feature on the runway at Paris Fashion Week when Slimane’s collection gets its debut.

What do we think? Slimane is known for his previous work at Saint Laurent for asymmetry and dark tones so it will be interesting to see what he does at a brand that’s known for clean, contemporary minimalism.
