4 handy tips to keep your closet organised

Are you tired of rummaging through a messy closet every morning? Say goodbye to your closet chaos with these handy organising tips.

Re-pack your clothes

Who says you need to wait for spring to clear out your closet? Do a big audit of your wardrobe every season to see which items are necessary and what you’ll actually wear. Pack the rest in suitcases or (if you can) put your out-of-season clothing in storage. When the next season comes, reassess what you’ll need and do it all over again. Be thorough and strict with yourself. Identify clothes that will work all seasons (like a light jacket or a cardigan) and only keep them when you do your seasonal clothes swap. Are you really going to wear that trench coat on a nippy evening in summer? We didn’t think so! Toss that trendy space thief in storage. By doing this, you’ll keep your closet from bursting at the seams.

Let go of items you don’t wear

It will be best to make yourself a calming cup of tea as you brace yourself for the arduous task at hand. Regularly empty your closet and sort your clothing into ‘keep’ and ‘donate’ piles. And be ruthless here. Do you ever wear that bold animal-print jersey that gets packed out (and back in storage) every winter? It can be difficult to let go of certain items that hold sentimental value or invoke nostalgia, but difficult choices need to be made here. Once compiled, repack the ‘keep’ pile neatly into your closet.

“Only keep the things that make you feel great when you wear them. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut of wearing stuff we don’t really love, and we don’t think to incorporate some of our favourite pieces into our regular wardrobe,” says Lucy Milligan Wahl, owner of professional organising company LMW Edits.

Regularly ‘tidy up’ your closet

Like all the other things in life, your closet will become unruly if not regularly maintained. Do a weekly clean-up where you refold and hang up all those clothes that found itself piled up on “The Chair”. You know, the one every room has where clothes go to ‘rest’.  By keeping your closet tidy, you can quickly find what you’re looking for and eliminate decision fatigue.

Colour co-ordinate

Not only is a colour-coded wardrobe pleasing to the eye, but you know exactly where to look when looking for your favourite shirt (looking at you, striped blue shirt in-between the white and blue shirts). “Follow the general rainbow of ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet), adding in brown, white, grey, and black, too. Hang from one side of your closet rod to the other. When you get to the next section of clothes, start the rainbow over. This will also give you a quick visual clue of where to look for each kind of clothing,” advises professional organizer Amy Trager.
