The statement-ceiling trend stems from the 20th century, around the pre-war era when it was regarded as a sign of luxury. During the wars, the statement ceiling fell away as luxury was not a priority. 

Now the trend is coming back, but in a much more accessible way, as the statement ceiling can be achieved at a lower cost than before. 

Nowadays, the statement ceiling allows one to create art and a focal point without it being overwhelming.
