How To Keep Warm This Winter

Staying warm and cosy during winter is on everyone’s to-do list, that’s for sure! And we’re here to help with cost-effective ways to keep the chill at bay.

There’s a great divide between those who believe it’s easier to get cool when hot than get warm when cold. Well, whatever side you
are on, getting warm can actually be quite expensive, especially if your home is not set up accordingly. For more energy-saving and cost-effective options to warm up your space, you can achieve the look and feel you want by shifting things around in your home and incorporating small elements. How, you may ask? Well, heavy winter curtains can replace regular ones for added insulation. This may be an excessive step for some, but if you have the means, it can make quite a difference. It obviously doesn’t hurt to fix any draughty windows. Make sure they’re all properly sealed and get one or two breeze blockers for those draughty doors. And this may seem obvious, but close doors to rooms you aren’t using. If you have a fire or heater going, you want to heat the smallest space possible to save on costs.

Those luxe, extra thick duvet inners can also come out now. If you’re meaning to get a new one or two, be sure to invest in good-quality duvets, throws and blankets to create a safe haven from the cold. Good luck getting out of said haven the next morning, though! Duvet inners that really retain heat is what you want to go for. It could be duck down (ethically sourced, of course), or if you opt for an all-season microfibre, then ensure you stock up on throws to layer on top. And who doesn’t love a beautiful blanket anyway, right? These can be in shades and prints that bring out certain elements in the room they’re in. Depending on the colours of your space, and your couch and scatter cushions, complement them with a natural-coloured throw, or pile on brightly printed floral or monochromatic grey and black blankets on to a bedspread that’s all white.

Many of us have tiled floors, which are great for cleaning but not for retaining heat. Need a solution? Place small high-pile runner mats along each side of the bed, so your feet have a soft landing in the morning. Larger rugs can be placed in the bigger rooms, too, to prevent feet from getting cold and improve heat retention. High-pile rugs are a lot more snug and luxe, and are great for bedrooms or even your living room. Low-pile rugs, on the other hand, can be kept for the kitchen and bathroom as they add character and warmth, and can be easily cleaned when the sun’s out.
