Get autumn ready with these five fashion essentials

As the weather cools, you need a transitional wardrobe that makes the most of what you already have, with a few new multitasking pieces to update your look.

The trench coat

Whether you go for classic spy-film beige or chic black, a trusty trench coat is a must for your autumn/winter wardrobe. Ultra-versatile, it goes with virtually everything: over jeans and a shirt for a catch-up coffee with a friend; over a slinky cocktail dress for a night out on a cool evening; or over a full-length boho dress topped with a fedora for the Saturday farmer’s market. Belted or loose, it should also have plenty of room to layer up underneath come winter.

The chunky knit

Whether it’s a big, bold cable knit, or a more refined oversized turtleneck, these statement pieces are just the easiest thing to throw on and head out the door. Need ideas? We’ve got ideas!

Pop your chunky knit over a collared white shirt, then pull the collar out to class up your look. Wear your crew-neck knit over a minidress, add some statement tights and The Boots (see below). Add a blazer, pencil skirt and heels for work. Follow the tuck-in trend: carefully tuck the front centre section into jeans, leather or pleated work pants – belt optional.

The boots

Boots are the foundation, literally, of any autumn wardrobe. Opting for classic tones of black or brown will ensure maximum versatility, but don’t be afraid to try a bright, bold colour, like red, either. Boots with heels will lengthen your legs, but if you prefer more stability, opt for one of the combat-boot styles trending right now.

Layers, baby

Planning an autumn outfit needs to take into account that while the weather is cooling, there may still be the odd warm day – or afternoon – which means mastering the art of layering. Don’t worry, it’s easy: Start with lightweight pieces like a classic tee or tank top – a crisp white button-down shirt is always a good addition to the mix. Then layer on a long-sleeved top, followed by a cardigan or chunky knit, and then a blazer or trench.

Invest in a selection of long-sleeved tops in basic colours that you can mix and match.

The jersey dress

This autumn staple is an ideal cute-and-casual everyday dress that can be layered with a trench, tights or leggings and boots for a chilly day, or worn simply with sandals or heels and bare legs for warmer weather. Add a blazer for a chic city look (ideal for work), or, if you’re feeling adventurous, wear it over a voluminous, flowy, floor-length skirt and add a belt.
