When it comes to putting together the perfect party cocktail, old school will always be best.
There’s a reason good old-fashioned cocktails will never go out of style: An irresistible and timeless mix of flavours, and of course the added visual wow-factor when poured into a classic glass. And now that winter is in full swing (and you’re no doubt having your friends and family over more and more), why not whip out one of these tried and tested recipes?
The Side Car
Inside: 30 ml cognac, 25 ml Cointreau, 25 ml fresh lemon juice; orange peel for garnish
Dating back to the early 1920s, The Side Car has a crisp yet warm citrus bite, and makes for the perfect late-night cocktail for cold winter nights. Stir all the ingredients together and serve as pictured on the opposite page, with orange peel to garnish. Ice and rosemary are optional.
Vodka Martini
Inside: 75 ml vodka, 45 ml dry vermouth; olive for garnish
You cannot go wrong with a Martini. Both elegant and rich with biting flavour, it’s no wonder this cocktail has stood the test of time. Although you can mix the ingredients in a shaker with ice, it’s best to slowly stir before pouring in a classic Martini glass.
The Sazerac
Inside: 1 sugar cube, water, whiskey, ice, a few dashes of bitters, and a few drops of absinthe; optional lemon peel for garnish
It may be small, but beware, the Sazerac, pictured on the right, really packs a punch. Start by muddling the sugar cube with a few drops of water. Then add some whiskey and ice, followed by the bitters, and swirl in a couple of drops of absinthe, followed by the garnish of your choice.
Tom Collins
Inside: 80 ml gin, 60 ml lemon juice, 30 ml simple syrup, top glass with soda water; cherries and lemon to garnish
A hallmark for bartenders since 1876, the Tom Collins is as refreshing as it sounds, with the dry gin contrasted with the sweet syrup. Serve chilled in a tall glass.
The pink Squirrel
Inside: ⅓ cup Creme de Noyaux, ⅓ cup White Creme de Cacao, ⅔ cup vanilla ice cream
A classic drink that’s easy enough on the palate that almost anyone will fall in love with it. Mix all the ingredients in a blender and pour into a Martini glass. Top with the garnish of your choice, cherries add a nice touch or simply add a few sprinkles or nuts for a stunning finale.
