Foodtok frenzies to feed your curiosity

Food trends can be inventive and delicious, or completely bizarre… How many of these have passed your lips?

Since its launch in 2016, TikTok has been a catalyst for some of the craziest food trends ever. Whether they tickle taste buds or get stomachs churning, they continue to go viral. We’ve collected some of the most tempting ones to feed your curiosity, inspire your kitchen skills or at least entertain you.

The yellow dragon fruit detox

This vibrant and exotic fruit takes detoxing to a whole new level. Packed with antioxidants, it’s not only visually appealing but also a healthy choice for those looking to cleanse their system. Dragon fruit is known for its high fibre content, which helps clean out the system, improve poor digestion and prevent constipation (it’s actually a natural laxative). The sweet and refreshing floral taste makes it a hit among health conscious TikTok users. However, we must caution you to consult your GP or a dietitian before starting any form of single-food detox.

Avocado desserts

Avocado is no longer just for guacamole or on toast. TikTok has introduced a world of avo desserts, from creamy chocolate mousse to ice cream. These creations offer a unique and surprisingly delicious twist on traditional sweet treats, and are a lifesaver for non-dairy eaters. It may seem odd to mix avo with condensed milk and ice (we know, it seems gross), but you’ll be surprised by this guilt-free pudding. It’s particular popular in the Philippines and is called abukado lamaw. Avo desserts should be eaten cold, as warm variants don’t seem to go down well, according to most foodies.

Fruit roll-up ice cream

Looking for a fun and fruity treat? This TikTok trend is the answer, combining the childhood joy of fruit roll-ups (a syrup-based, fruit-flavoured snack rolled into a tube, available at specialist food stores) with creamy ice cream – perfect for a summer’s day. The playful parcel can be customised with your favourite fruit flavours and toppings. The other cool thing is that the ice cream makes the so roll-up crunchy and chewy, which has foodies completely amazed.

#Watertok wonders

Staying hydrated just got a whole lot more exciting with #WaterTok. TikTok users are infusing their water with a variety of fruits, herbs and even edible flowers. It’s a simple way to elevate your hydration game and enjoy a burst of flavour with every sip. While not as flashy as some other food trends, it encourages drinking more water by adding natural flavours (and is a healthier alternative to sugary cooldrinks). Although some mega fans have taken it too far by adding all sorts of powder sweeteners and syrups to create a glistening, colourful vase of sugary delight, provoking health experts to sound the alarm for their high-sugar, diabetes-inducing content.

For the love of butter (boards)

Butter boards are quite the sophisticated trend, perfect for social gatherings – and, it seems, for creating TikTok reels and Instagram-worthy cheese platter flat lays. In essence, they provide foodies with an overall sensory experience. This TikTok trend celebrates the art of butter, showcasing various types and flavours, often accompanied by fresh breads and complimentary spreads. It’s an aesthetic and creative way to explore the world of butter beyond the basic tub or scooped-out balls.

The chopped sandwich

TikTokers are getting creative with ingredients, turning simple sarmies into culinary masterpieces. The chopped sandwich is a feast for the eyes and taste buds. Gourmet and inventive ingredients are all chopped to the same size to ensure you get all the flavour in every bite, mixed with condiments and seasoning, and loaded into a sub or bun. This handy food hack is also presented in the form of a tasty meal-in-a-jar, perfect for those on the go and a unique way to enjoy your favourite sandwich ingredients without the mess.

Tinned fish date nights

Who would have thought tinned fish would go viral? Funnily enough, it also happens to be a sustainable food trend. Thanks to TikTok, and San Francisco chef Ali Hooke, this household staple has been elevated. Tinned fish dates have become a ‘thing’ – and they’re exactly what it says on the label (you and your favourite person combine a range of different tinned fish options with accompaniments – you are only limited by your imagination). Quirky and adventurous TikTokers are creating unique dishes and pairings – though some should watch the salt! It’s a journey of taste and exploration that challenges culinary norms.
