Britney v Spears. A must watch?

From Mickey Mouse Club House to ‘90s pop star to America’s Sweetheart, Britney Spears has always been the centre of media attention. Whether it be for her snake coiled body and sensual dance moves during her iconic VMAs ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ performance, her rollercoaster marriage and messy divorce from then-husband Kevin Federline, or locking lips with Madonna on the 2003 VMAs stage. But her latest dalliance with media centres around her conservatorship. While the world may be no stranger to the legacy of Britney, and her ‘Toxic’ relationship with her family, multiple documentaries offer contesting views on the ‘Circus’ singer. Some have even Britney herself scratching her head in disbelief. But let’s ‘Break the ice’ and unpack Netflix’s brand-new documentary that speaks on Britney Spears and her conservatorship.

Britney vs Spears:

Released on 28 September 2021, a day before Britney’s date with the court concerning her conservatorship, Britney vs Spearsseeks to offer enlightenment on the 13-year long battle that Britney has fought concerning the control over her life and multi-million-dollar estate. It’s the fifth major documentary to do this during the course of this year alone.

What you can expect from Britney vs Spears:

Created by Journalist Jenny Eliscu, who has followed the events surrounding Britney and her conservatorship for the last two decades, and Director Erin Lee Carr, this documentary tracks all of the events that have gone down concerning the conservatorship from 2008 to now. Showing interviews with Spears’ past employees, friends, managers and even her ex-boyfriend. The 94-minute film pieces together a story that may leave some feeling enraged, confused and even heartbroken. Revealing insight on Britney’s mental health from the conversation with ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib, her use of the prescription drug amphetamine to cope during the times of her divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline, and her fight for custody over her children. We also get new details on the conservatorship arrangements, even though her father Jamie Spears and those involved are not interviewed. Original documentation speaking on matters related to dementia, medical reports that led to the conclusions that Britney could not make decisions for herself regarding her finances, and an undercover plot to get signatures for a petition that launched to get Mr Ingham (Britney’s lawyer) fired, were all highlighted, discussed and revealed within the documentary. Britney’s close friend and cinematographer, Andrew Gallery also has a few things to say, some of which are allegedly Britney’s very own words as he reads a letter that she hoped he would read to the media or at least share publicly.
