Local Fashion Enthusiast Macc Gee

Young and talented, the local fashion enthusiast known as Macc Gee steps into the ClubX studio to give us the low-down on his career thus far

BORN WITH STYLE

Born in Burgersfort, Limpopo, Lesedi Riba – who South Africa has come to know as the dope fashionista Macc Gee – grew up in a small developing village with his two siblings and parents. As a young boy with big dreams of someday becoming a footballer, he attended Capricorn High School and Northern Academy, spending much of his free time playing club and school football. ‘It was hard finding mentors growing up because when you are born into a very cultured and traditional setup, fashion is not given the limelight,’ he explains. ‘I had to seek most of my inspo from soccer players, although I had a couple of family members who had a good sense of style. I never really got much mentoring growing up, but I believe doing life with my older brother, Benny, helped me through situations; he gave me guidance when I needed it most.’ Despite a keen interest in soccer, Macc Gee knew that style and fashion was his calling. ‘From as far back as I can remember, this journey in fashion has felt almost inherent…The signs have always been there,’ he says. ‘However, it became most clear when I ventured into sourcing clothes at a very young age for friends. This was possible for me because my brother was based in Joburg at the time. So I had access to a wide variety of exclusive apparel.’

PURE CREATIVE TALENT

Initially, the style star had decided to study towards an Accounting degree. However, he felt ‘unfulfilled’ at the time.‘I still have a desire to return and complete it whenever I can though,’ he admits. Today, it is his creative side that fulfills him the most. ‘Pure creative talent is the holy grail of anything that you venture into in this industry, but I am still an advocate for education because I truly believe it provides a holistic approach to the fashion industry, and the skills that can be learned are invaluable,’ he expresses. Thus far, the style icon has built quite the successful clothing brand (Macc Gee Clothing, which launched back in 2019), working with big industry names such as A-reece, Nasty C and Priddy Ugly –  to name but a few. He also happens to be an international NovaMen By FashionNova ambassador. Macc Gee has, thus far, developed quite the eye for fashion during his overseas travels, always taking risks and putting a unique spin on things, while illustrating a distinctive street fashion element. ‘I aspire to be the biggest fashion icon in the world. I don’t think there are any boundaries to my vision. I plan to take on the world,’ he exclaims.

RAISING THE BAR

Now, making fashion more of an ‘event’ than just a statement, Macc Gee hosts the popular monthly fashion, music and lifestyle event known as Drip Sundays, bringing together masses of young people to celebrate fashion as an ever-evolving culture. ‘The legacy that I am trying to leave behind is one that inspires people to fuel the fire within themselves,’ he says. ‘Do not just conform, and always know that you are your ancestors’ wildest dreams come true. There is absolutely no limit to your potential, you just have to believe.’

While always trying to remain grounded and positive, MaccGee admits that he has had to overcome many hurdles and disappointments, and has made many mistakes that he’s learned from. ‘I’ve surrounded myself with people who exude positivity, which makes the journey more enjoyable,’ he says. ‘This also makes the pressure less burdensome. If anything,
the thrill comes from the pressure in this industry… The sense that you have to prove to yourself, and show that you are the best, is also the exciting part to every obstacle.’

Right now, Macc Gee is committed to growing his business, constantly upskilling himself and keeping his finger
on the pulse of what’s relevant.‘In this industry I’ve realised that people skills and discipline are vital,’ he exclaims. ‘Sound leadership skills, along with humility, have also helped me elevate my brand thus far.’  We couldn’t agree more and can’t wait to see all the epic threads he launches next!
