4 tips to stick to your holiday budget

That summer holiday you’ve planned is within arm’s reachdon’t let money worries dampen your spirit. Follow these savvy money-saving tips to ensure you don’t overspend on your planned vacation.

Set (and save for) your daily spending limit

You should have two budgets: an overall budget and your daily spending budget. After booking accommodation and travelling, your next focus should be your day-to-day spending. Plan your itinerary to see how much money you’ll have to spend each day. This way you can see where you can save up and make sure you’ll have enough to cover all your activities.

Keep track of your expenses

Whether you use a spreadsheet, notebook or an app, tracking your spending is the best way to know that you are still within your financial means. By keeping close eye on your spending habits, you will know when to tighten those purse strings after forking out too much the day before. Or, on the plus side, reward yourself with a spoil after a day of good budgeting.

Prepare (most of) your own meals

Although you should try the local cuisine, eating out every day can add up to a steep bill. Book accommodation at a spot with a small kitchen so you can prepare some quick meals in-between all your activities. If you do decide to eat at a restaurant, keep the leftovers for a snack the next day.

BONUS: You get to explore your surroundings even more when shopping for local produce.

Communicate your budget limitations

Make sure you and your companions are on the same page when it comes to your vacation spending. If you’re tagging along with bigger spenders, it is easy to lose sight of the strict budget and blow through (much) more money than you planned to.

“I think the biggest thing to keep in mind when traveling with friends at different budgets is to be open about it before booking. Everyone should be open about what they’re able to afford on the trip and agree to accommodation, food, transit, tours, etc., before booking so that everyone is on the same page,” explains travel blogger, Amber Primdahl.
