Here’s to the survivors! They’re not only some of the oldest restaurants in the country, but they continue serving those traditional and authentic dishes that made them famous to begin with
Thunder Gun Steakhouse | Johannesburg
As the name suggests, Thunder Gun offers patrons an array of mouth-watering steaks, and they’ve been doing so for more than 50 years. The welcoming pub atmosphere, along with good comforting meals, is why this restaurant has been going strong for half a century. When it comes to its specialities, you’ll get pointed to the steak side of the menu – and it takes up a lot of space. Made from super-grade slow-aged beef, Thunder Gun provides visitors with a range of options including gourmet cut rump, New York cut sirloin, the melt-in-your-mouth maxi fillet, and the mega T-bone for the ultra hungry.

Maria’s Greek Café | Cape Town
Maria’s has been a staple in Gardens, Cape Town, since 1955. With its tables spilling out on the sidewalk, the setting is reminiscent of a European cafe. The Mediterranean menu is definitely a factor in this establishment’s longevity, with dishes such as souvlaki, calamari multiple ways, and their range of pitas with delicious fillings. Maria’s signature dish that is not to be missed is the slow-roasted lamb with ouzo sauce.
