Your guide to styling coats for autumn

A good-quality coat can transcend shifting fashion trends, last through one season (and the next!) and be paired with the items you already have in your wardrobe. These are the four types of coats you need this (and every) autumn – along with easy ways to style them.

Trench coat

If there’s one reason you need a trench coat for autumn, it’s the ease at which you can take it from a casual breakfast date to an important work meeting. Its versatility means you can pair it with just about anything in your wardrobe. For a chic daytime look, wear it with a sweatshirt and wide-legged pants. Taking your trench on a night out? Wear it over your cocktail dress and a pair of boots.

Wrap coat

Looking for a coat that screams chic and easy and wear? The wrap coat has come in hot this season, offering comfort and the silhouette of your dreams, thanks to a belt that cinches the waist.

Style it with fitted trousers or leggings for the full effect (you want the coat as close to your body as possible) and play around with how you tie it: close it up with oversized bow, wear it open with an effortless tie at the back, or tie it loosely in a single knot.

Parka

They’re the coolest coat of them all… and one of the strongest when it comes to fighting off the cold-weather elements! On very cold, rainy days, there’s nothing quite like the cover you can expect from a parka. They come in longer lengths and as jackets, and they’re insulated to keep you warm.

Pair your parka with footwear that’s as chunky as it is to avoid your look being too top-heavy, especially when wearing a hooded parka. They’re not reserved for fitted trousers, either – throw it over a pleated maxi skirt for a subtle hint of texture and a chic appeal.

Melton coat

It’s been dipping in and out of the fashion scene over the years but this season, it’s a must-have item for any autumn wardrobe. What exactly makes a melton coat so special? It’s extremely durable so it will last for years to come, and it is made from a water- and wind-resistant fabric.

An unlined melton coat works well in autumn – pair it with your workwear or over a casual ensemble of fitted jeans, a plain T-shirt and your best pair of kicks. Footwear that also stands out with a melton coat are knee-high boots and ankle boots with embellishments, like sparkles, spikes or buckles.

Melton coats can be a more affordable option, so use that to your advantage and buy one in many different colours! A must-have, though, is a classic neutral shade of brown or beige.
