4 Expert tips to combat winter skin from makeup artists

Don’t let dryness ruin your makeup glow! These expert-approved tips will help you fight off flakes and keep your face beat looking flawless and fresh – even when the temperature drops.

1. Properly prep your skin

Think of skin prep as your secret weapon: it’s the first step to a glowing, dewy face beat and the best way to keep dry patches from stealing the spotlight. “In the winter, having hydrating creams is key for keeping your skin moisturised,” notes celebrity makeup artist Dahlia Warner.

@moskinatelier The secret to a flawless makeup is an intentional skincare base. Yes, I said intentional because knowing exactly what products to use before your makeup application is key hence why I have decided to share my secret with you guys. For my makeup base, I use @Dr.Althea US Aqua Marine Watery Cream and Aqua Marine Deep Serum. Try using these two before your makeup and you will thank me later. #dryskin #cakeymakeup #skincare #kbeauty #glowingskin ♬ LOS VOLTAJE – Sayfalse & Yb Wasg’ood & Ariis

2. Use a damp beauty blender

Are you using your beauty blender incorrectly? Dampen your sponge before applying makeup. “It’s better for blending makeup on dry, winter skin because the moisture helps prevent makeup from clinging to dry patches,” says makeup artist Joseph Carrillo. “It ultimately creates a more seamless, natural and dewy finish,” he adds.

3. Steer clear of powder

Skip powder products in the winter and choose cream-based formulas like cheek stains, balms or liquid makeup. “I think the biggest mistake people make in the winter is using heavy products with a powder base, like foundation powders or mineral foundations,” says makeup artist Susie Sobol. “These products can clog pores and lie on top of dry surfaces, causing the skin to look pasty and heavily made-up,” she adds.

4. Mix your primer with your foundation

Foundation alone can make your makeup base look flaky, especially when battling winter skin. While many people use primer before foundation, an effective trick for a smoother, more hydrated look is to mix your foundation with a hydrating primer. “I always mix the two together and then apply [the combination] using a foundation brush. It gives a lightweight finish and leaves the skin with a luminous glow all day long”, explains makeup artist Jenny Kanavaros.
