Whether you enjoy a polished, subtle look or something dark and dramatic, eye make-up has the amazing ability to give your face (and your eye shape) outstanding definition. That’s why having a great eyeshadow palette on hand is such an important investment for any beauty enthusiast.  

Now, while many stick to those beloved neutral shades, there’s nothing wrong with dipping into bright pans of pigment. Playing with colour can seem intimidating at first, but once you find what works for you and your eye shape, you’ll never look back.   

Understanding Undertones  

The first step to finding your go-to eyeshadow palette, is to choose one with hues that will complement your skin’s undertone. 

Golds, oranges, and reds are great for accentuating skin with warm undertones, while rich blues, greens and purples match cool skin tones. If you have a neutral undertone, though, you’ll be chuffed to know that just about any shade could work well for your skin colour.  

Experiment A Bit  

We can’t deny that nude shades are great – they’re staples in any girl’s make-up stash. But keeping a few colourful shades on hand can also be beneficial. For instance, blue eyeshadow can be used as an alternative to an inky, felt-tip blue liquid liner – easier to work with and less likely to smudge.  

Purple is also a versatile shade that works for just about all eye colours. So, don’t neglect those bright hues. There’s so much you can do with them!

Curate Your Collection  

When you’re feeling more comfortable with using an eyeshadow palette, you can start collecting, choosing whatever catches your attention. Some staple colour stories, or ‘colour schemes’ to consider adding to your stash, include:  

• Neutral/everyday 
• Soft glam (for special occasions) 
• Berry or mauve shades 
• Jewel tones 

A word of warning, though: be careful of hoarding!  

Colour Pop  

If you aren’t a fan of ‘full lids of bright colour’, then try applying just a pop to the inner corners of your eyes. This trick will not only assist to subtly brighten your appearance, but will also make your eyes appear bigger. Have fun and opt for metallics or neon shades to really make a statement.  

Pro Tip 
When using the colour pop technique, try matching the colour to your outfit or accessories to pull your ensemble together. Cohesion is vital.
